Chad’s interim president, Mahamat Idriss Deby, has launched his campaign for next month’s presidential elections, pledging to boost security and the economy and end 3-year military rule.

During a rally in the capital NDjamena, Déby stressed the importance of strengthening internal security to ensure peace and stability and stated that they “have reached the last turn on the road to constitutional return.”

Chadian experts stressed that the presidential elections represent a necessary step to cross from the transitional phase to a new political situation, especially with economic, security and political challenges.

The elections are due to take place on May 6, after extending the transition period by more than three years, despite the interim president’s pledge to hold the elections during an 18-month transition period.

The government of Chad sent a letter to the United States, threatening to cancel the agreement on the presence of the American troops on the country’s territory.

Sources told CNN that the letter was addressed to the U.S. military attaché in Chad last week.

The sources pointed out that the letter singled out the special operations working group located at the aforementioned military base.

CNN sources confirmed that the letter was from Chadian Air Force Chief of Staff Idriss Amin, and that it was not sent through official diplomatic channels.

Mohamed Idriss Deby Itno has been married three times and has five children with his first wife, whom he married in 2010, the daughter of former Central African minister Abbacar Saboun, and his second wife was from the Zaghawa tribe, to which his father belongs.
