A number of people were killed and injured during celebrations following the announcement of Chadian President Mohamed Idriss Deby as the winner.
According to Chadian sources, eight people were killed and 68 injured as a result of stray gunfire by soldiers and supporters of President Mohamed Deby during the celebrations.
The capital N’Djamena and the southern city of Mundo have seen large security and military reinforcements in anticipation of possible violence after opposition Prime Minister and losing candidate Succès Masra called for protests.
At night, gunshots were heard in N’Djamena after the electoral authority declared Deby the winner of 61.3% in the May 6 vote.
