The Libyan News Agency said in a statement on Monday that a security force stormed the premises of the Libyan News Agency on Sunday after official working hours and seized its historic building in the capital, Tripoli.

She added that the security authority closed the doors of the building with an external lock and blocked it with red wax before preventing on Monday morning workers in administrative and financial affairs, audit offices, legal adviser, stores, and treasury who occupy this building from entering it and practicing their normal work.

In its statement, the agency called on the General Administration in Benghazi to the House of Representatives, the Presidential Council and the Attorney General to intervene and put an end to this blatant and irresponsible attack.

She pointed out that this unprecedented measure not only in Libya, but in the rest of the world, unfortunately coincides with the preparations for the commemoration of International Workers’ Day, on the first of May, and World Press Freedom Day on the third of May, which casts a heavy shadow on the hearts of all employees of the Libyan News Agency Foundation.

The Libyan Journalists Syndicate denounced the seizure of a headquarters belonging to the Libyan News Agency in Tripoli by Libyan security authorities.

The union’s statement stated that the building housing the agency’s administrative and financial departments was arbitrarily seized, preventing workers from accessing their offices.

The syndicate expressed its deep concern about this flagrant violation of the basic rights of the media institution, considering it an attack on one of the pillars of the national press and media in Libya.

The syndicate called on the legislative, judicial, and executive bodies to intervene urgently to restore the situation to normal, stressing the need to ensure the continuity and independence of the Libyan News Agency, and to protect its employees from any interference.

The director general of the Libyan News Agency, Ibrahim Hadiya al-Majbri, directed a request for the intervention of the attorney general to return the agency’s historic headquarters in the capital, Tripoli, which was waxed by officers of the Libyan intelligence service.

Al-Majbri’s statement explained that at three in the afternoon on Sunday, a number of officers of the agency came to the official historical headquarters of the Libyan News Agency in the Zawiya Al-Dahmani area on the Shatt road in Tripoli, where they “requested his forcible extradition without a legal basis.”

The incident comes as the Libyan News Agency celebrates its sixtieth anniversary, and on the eve of International Workers’ Day and World Press Freedom Day.
The Libyan News Agency is the only media institution established by law in 1964.

An analysis of recent Central Bank data revealed that Libya’s crude oil production rose by 12% during the year 2023 to reach 433.5 million barrels, compared to 386.5 million barrels in the previous year.

Regarding the distribution of Libya’s crude oil production among national companies operating in the country, the economic bulletin showed that “Al-Waha” Oil Company led the rest of the companies with a production of 102.2 million barrels during the past year, an increase of 9% and 8.5 million barrels over what it recorded in the year 2022.

The Arabian Gulf Oil Company “AGOCO” came in second place. The company produced 101.8 million barrels during the year 2023, after a slight decline of one million barrels, down from 102.8 million barrels recorded in the previous year.
