🇲🇱 ЮГУБА: АНИМИСТСКИЕ ТАНЦЫ В МАСКАХ 👹
Команда MZUNGU EXPEDITIONS начала своё путешествие по Мали 🇲🇱 с исследования западной части страны, населенной преимущественно народами бамбара и мандинка.
Мандинка (малинке) — наследники средневековый империи Манди, простиравшейся от Сенегала до Буркина-Фасо с запада на восток и от Мали до Гвинеи с севера на юг.
Танцы ЮГУБА являются одним из наиболее любопытных выражений материальной культуры мандинка, сохранившихся до наших дней.
Танцы выполняются в масках. Традиционно маски появлялись только по специальным случаям.
Команда экспедиции приняла участие в ритуальных танцах в красивом месте у скал Мандинго.
Мандинка выступили с 4 сменами масок (а значит, и костюмов).
Маска ЮГУБА (белый соломенный костюм) символизирует счастье, и танец выполняется для специальных церемоний.
Маска НАМА (темно-зелёный инфернальный костюм) является символом зимы. Танец выполняется для оповещения деревни о наступлении сезона дождей.
Маска УОРОНИ (пышный белый костюм с разноцветными вкраплениями) символизирует фермерское дело и плодородие. Танец призывает жителей идти на полевые работы.
Маска ЧАМПАНЗЕ (чёрный костюм обезьяны) символизирует урожай арахиса. Танец призван поторопить сельчан к уборке созревшего земляного ореха, пока его не уничтожили шимпанзе.
Завтра команда перелетает в загадочный Тимбукту, на самый юг Сахары!

The MZUNGU EXPEDITIONS team began the journey across Mali🇲🇱 by exploring the western part of the country, populated mainly by the Bambara and Mandinka.
Mandinka (Malinke) are heirs of the medieval empire Mandi that was stretched from Senegal to Burkina Faso from west to east and from Mali to Guinea from north to south.
Yuguba dances are one of the most curious expressions of Mandinka material culture that have survived till nowadays.
The dances are performed with masks. Traditionally, masks only appeared on special occasions.
The expedition team attended the ritual dances in the scenic place near the Mandingo cliffs.
Mandinka performed with 4 changes of masks (and also costumes).
The YUGUBA mask (white straw-like suit) symbolizes happiness. The dance is performed for special ceremonies.
The NAMA mask (dark green infernal costume) is a symbol of winter. The dance is performed to alert the village of the coming rainy season.
The UORONI mask (a lush white suit with multi-colored splashes) symbolizes farming and fertility. The dance encourages residents to go to field works.
The CHAMPANZE mask (black monkey costume) symbolizes the peanut harvest. The dance is designed to rush the villagers to harvest ripe peanuts before it is devoured by chimpanzees.
Tomorrow the team will fly to the mysterious Timbuktu, on the very edge of the Sahara!

Dear friends, we are sharing with you some photographs of the Mandinka (Malinke) people, whom our team met in the villages and markets of West Mali, near Sibi.
Mandinka form the majority in the western part of the country, as well as in the border areas of neighboring Senegal, Gambia, Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Guinea-Bissau.
Previously, the society was divided into free people (khoron) - farmers, warriors, hunters; members of craft castes - blacksmiths (numu) and their wives-potters, tanners (karanke), griot storytellers (dyeli), Muslim storytellers (fina); slaves (dyon). However, now caste differences, secret alliances and other ancient institutions are gradually disappearing.

🇲🇱 ДОГОНЫ: ПРИШЕЛЬЦЫ С СИРИУСА 🪐
Открытые для посещений европейскими этнографами в начале 20-го века догоны, настолько выбивались из общего ряда, что породили целую концепцию об их неземном происхождении.
Поводом для этого стали выводы изучавшего догонов французского этнолога Марселя Гриоля и других его соотечественников.
Ученые раскрыли догонское видение Вселенной, творения бога Аммы. Среди прочего, они сообщили, что старейшины племени знают о существовании спутников Юпитера, колец Сатурна, невидимой звезды Сириус В и многое другое. Эта сенсационная информация была массово растиражирована как доказательство посещения земли инопланетянами.
Однако этнографы, посетившие догонов в более позднее время, эту информацию не подтвердили. Термин «сиги толо», который, по мнению Гриоля, относится к Сириусу, на самом деле обозначает любое светило, включая Венеру и Солнце. 🇲🇱DOGONS: ALIENS FROM SIRIUS 🪐
Dogons, opened for visiting by European ethnographers at the beginning of the 20th century, were so out of character that they gave rise to a concept of their unearthly origin.
The reason for this was the conclusions of the French ethnologist Marcel Griaule and his compatriots, who studied Dogons.
Scientists have revealed the Dogon vision of the Universe, the creation of the god Amma. Among other things, they reported that the tribal elders were aware of the existence of Jupiter's moons, the rings of Saturn, the invisible star Sirius B, and more. This sensational information was massively replicated as evidence of aliens visiting the Earth.
However, ethnographers who visited the Dogon at a later time did not confirm this information. The term "sigi tolo", which, according to Griaule, refers to Sirius, actually means any star, including Venus and the Sun. For 11 years of researching the tribe, ethnographers have not found any traces of "secret knowledge", although they also communicated with Griaule’s companions.

Чего не отнять у племен Анголы, так это их страсть к причудливым прическам. Они как будто соревнуются в виртуозности замысловатых укладок и необычности составов для их создания. 🦳
Женщины мвила используют пасту, приготовленную из масла, трав, красного камня и коры деревьев. Они обильно украшают волосы глиняными и стеклянными бусами, которые указывают на их семейное положение и социальный статус. 📿
Племена хумби знамениты своей уникальной прической в виде слоновьих ушей. 🐘
У женщин с маленькими детьми племени мудимба удивительные афропрически. 🦱
Хакаона, вероятно, прозвали "черными химба" за состав для закрепления заплетенных волос. Они используют смесь черного торфа и масла. 🏴
У химба замысловатые красновато-рыжие прически из охры отличаются в зависимости от возраста женщины. 🦰
В племени нгуэнделенго некоторые мальчики до сих пор носят ирокезы, а женщины вплетают в волосы смесь из измельченной коры дерева и масла из косточек плода мупеке. 🌰

What cannot be taken away from the tribes of Angola is their passion to bizarre hairstyles. They seem to compete in the virtuosity of intricate styling and unusualness of ingredients to create them. 🦳
Mwila women use a paste made from oil, herbs, red stone, and tree bark. They adorn their hair profusely with clay and glass beads, which indicate their marital and social status.📿
Humbi tribes are famous for their unique elephant ear hairstyle.🐘
Hakaona was probably nicknamed "black himba" because of the composition for fixing braided hair. They use a mixture of black peat and oil.🏴
Mudimba women with small children have amazing afro hairstyles.🦱
Himba have intricate reddish-red ocher hairstyles that differ depending on the age of the woman.🦰
In Nguendelengo tribe, some boys still wear mohawks, and women weave a mixture of crushed tree bark and mupeke seed oil into their hair. 🌰

В июне наша команда отправилась в самую центральную часть Демократической Республики Конго в Королевство Куба и получила целую порцию африканских приключений! 👹
Участники добрались до племен Королевства Куба, а также пенде и яка, и сделали множество атмосферных снимков. Стали свидетелями церемонии инициации мальчиков Муканда у пенде, встретились с колоритными конголезскими стилягами La Sape, а также с мусорными художниками Киншасы.
А ещё посетили замкнутую религиозную секту Тата Гонда, секту Культа Смерти и заглянули в закулисье зрелищных боев современных рестлеров.🕺🏿

In June our team traveled to the central most part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Kuba Kingdom and got a whole portion of African adventures! 👹
The participants made their way to Kuba, as well as Pende and Yaka tribes, and brought many atmospheric photos. They witnessed the Mukanda boys’ initiation ceremony by Pende, met with colorful Congolese Sapeurs, as well as with the “trash artists” of Kinshasa.
They also visited a closed religious sect of the prophet Tata Gonda, a sect of the Death Cult and looked behind the scenes of spectacular fights of modern wrestlers.🕺🏿
Next year, we are sure to repeat the expedition to the versatile DR Congo, sign up for the adventure! 🤩

OUR THRILLING CHALLENGES OF THE JUNE!
🇨🇩 In the past month a team of 10 adventurers embarked on a journey to the DR Congo, where they encountered authentic African adventures! They explored the Kingdom of Kuba, immersed themselves in the vibrant cultures of various tribes and witnessed the mesmerizing masked dances. They were privileged to witness the Mukanda initiation ceremony for young boys and captured the stylish La Sape through their lenses.
They also explored a closed religious sect of the prophet Tata Gonda, a sect of the Death Cult and looked behind the scenes of spectacular fights of modern Voodoo wrestlers. We are planning to repeat this extraordinary photo expedition next year, led by Mzungu. You can already submit your request to join us! 🤩
🇲🇱Our expedition to Mali was an absolute blast! It was like stepping into a wild adventure wonderland. This was our third trip to explore the ancient African empires! We delved into the rich tapestry of tribes, witnessed some mind-blowing dances by the Dogon, Malinke, and Bambara folks, caught jaw-dropping acrobatic acts by the Mandé, and even got to experience the "Venice" of West Africa in Mopti.

The Dogon processions and masked dances are held in connection with funerals, initiation ceremonies, and other ritual processions, as well as the start of agricultural work, annual rituals in honor of the pagan Dogon gods, and other ceremonial occasions.
Below is a description of the basic masks of the Dogon. The meaning of masks is often very philosophical and subject to ambiguous interpretation.
KANAGA is a basic and ancient Dogon mask depicting a Dogon-sacred crocodile, on which the Dogon is believed to have swam the Niger River during their exodus from the Mande lands to Bandiagara.
There is a symbolic cross on the head, the upper part of which is directed to the sky (where it is raining) and the lower part to the ground (where the Dogon cultivate their fields). Between them, there is the human mind of the Dogon. It represents the balance between earth and heaven, the system of the Dogon universe.
At the beginning of Mali’s independence, Kananga figure was placed on its national flag, but was later removed.
LASUGONJE or BEDE is a unique female mask. Women are strictly forbidden to participate in masquerades. According to the belief, if a woman wears a costume, she will surely die soon. The only exception is a girl who is an orphan. She is the one who is allowed to dance and is given a black mask that resembles mask of an executioner or otherwise covers the woman’s face. There are often elements symbolizing women, such as breasts or long hair.
UALU - a mask of a guard, a local policeman, with horns of a goat. Guards during the dance scare away children and women. Both are prohibited from attending ceremonies.
According to another version, ualu is an image of an antelope as a symbol of fertility (antelope is also a symbol of fertility in Bambara). The dance mimics the behavior of the antelope, the dancer holds in his hands two short sticks with which he scratches the ground in a dance, like an antelope during the mating period. These actions are also reminiscent of men cultivating the land in the fields.
TENGE-TANGA is the mask of a dancer on stilts. Traditionally, this costume is worn by only one member, the tribe chief, and occurs during a memorial ceremony called the Dame. On the third day after death, a dance is held with this mask.
It is also believed that the stilts elevate a woman’s Bede mask, thereby underscoring the importance of women to the Dogon.
SATIMBE is the mask of the first Dogon progenitor woman who is called to cause rain (with the headrest in the form of a praying woman). It appears at ceremonies before the onset of the rainy season, for better harvest in the fields of the Dogon farmers. It is believed that the SATIMBE mask was borrowed from the Telem tribe, which the Dogons had displaced from Bandiagara.
SIRIGE is a mask of a «high-rise building», which represents the house of the Hogon, the priest of Dogons. Otherwise, it symbolizes 7 heavenly levels. The Dogon dwell under the Bandiagara, on the rock itself, and on the plateau above. Thus, their world has seven levels up and seven levels also underground.
Sirige is also called the mask of «snake tongue», which (tongue), according to the beliefs of Dogons, purifies the Hogon. The serpent is sacred to the Dogon (the god Namma is depicted as a snake) and takes care of the Hogon, as in the Dogon culture they does not bathe more than once a year.

Легенда об Ибоге началась с исчезновения мужа Bandzioku, жительницы пигмейского племени. Он пропал в глубинах леса, и его тело так и не было обнаружено. В соответствии с древними обычаями племени, она вышла замуж за сводного брата ушедшего мужа.
Однажды, во время рыбалки, она обнаружила в своих сетях человеческие кости, принадлежавшие её первому супругу. Это привело её к странной встрече с мистическим животным, ведущим её к таинственной пещере Kakonangonda. Внутри пещеры, она столкнулась с голосами духов и опробовала корень Ибоги, который открыл ей взгляд на мир душ ушедших.
Духи потребовали от неё регулярные жертвы, и она их приносила.
В очередной раз, когда Bandzioku принесла свои подношения в пещеру, духи вне себя от волнения закричали: "Мума, Мума!" - что в данном контексте означало приближение неосвященного. Женщина попыталась убедить духов, что она пришла в одиночестве, но обернулась и увидела мужа, скрывающегося за деревом.Не колеблясь, она предложила ему отведать корень Ибоги, и он тоже увидел мир духов.
Для того, чтобы мзунгу (белому человеку) узнать побольше про этот культ и древнюю религию, нужно отправиться с нами в экспедицию в Центральную Африканскую Республику и республику Конго в январе!

🇨🇬 🇨🇫 THE IBOGA CULT - HALLUCINOGEN SACRED PLANT 🍭🌿
The legend of Iboga began with the disappearance of Bandzioku's husband, a member of the Pygmy tribe. He vanished deep into the forest, and his body was never found. Following the ancient customs of her tribe, she married her departed husband's stepbrother.
One day, while fishing, she found human bones in her nets, which belonged to her first husband. This led her to a strange encounter with a mystical creature that guided her to the mysterious Kakonangonda cave. Inside the cave, she encountered the voices of spirits and tasted the Iboga root, which opened her eyes to the world of departed souls.
The spirits demanded regular sacrifices from her, and she complied.
On one occasion, as Bandzioku brought her offerings to the cave, the spirits cried out in excitement, "Muma, Muma!" in this context meaning the approach of an uninitiated person. She tried to convince the spirits that she had come alone, but as she turned, she saw her husband hiding behind a tree. Without hesitation, she offered him a taste of the Iboga root, and he too glimpsed the world of spirits.

Wesso, the village of Odzala, is the home of the Baka pygmies. In this region, the pygmies engage in the hallucinogenic effects of the Iboga tree. They typically do this at night, and the ritual differs from the Bwiti ceremony in Gabon.
The Iboga tree holds a central place in the spiritual practices of Bwiti in West-Central Africa, primarily in Gabon, Cameroon, and the Republic of Congo. Its roots and bark, containing alkaloids, are used in various ceremonies to induce near-death experiences. Iboga is consumed in large doses by those initiated into this spiritual practice, and it is also ingested more regularly in smaller amounts during rituals and tribal dances.
