🇲🇱 ЮГУБА: АНИМИСТСКИЕ ТАНЦЫ В МАСКАХ 👹

Команда MZUNGU EXPEDITIONS начала своё путешествие по Мали 🇲🇱 с исследования западной части страны, населенной преимущественно народами бамбара и мандинка.

Мандинка (малинке) — наследники средневековый империи Манди, простиравшейся от Сенегала до Буркина-Фасо с запада на восток и от Мали до Гвинеи с севера на юг.

Танцы ЮГУБА являются одним из наиболее любопытных выражений материальной культуры мандинка, сохранившихся до наших дней.
Танцы выполняются в масках. Традиционно маски появлялись только по специальным случаям.

Команда экспедиции приняла участие в ритуальных танцах в красивом месте у скал Мандинго.
Мандинка выступили с 4 сменами масок (а значит, и костюмов).

Маска ЮГУБА (белый соломенный костюм) символизирует счастье, и танец выполняется для специальных церемоний.

Маска НАМА (темно-зелёный инфернальный костюм) является символом зимы. Танец выполняется для оповещения деревни о наступлении сезона дождей.

Маска УОРОНИ (пышный белый костюм с разноцветными вкраплениями) символизирует фермерское дело и плодородие. Танец призывает жителей идти на полевые работы.

Маска ЧАМПАНЗЕ (чёрный костюм обезьяны) символизирует урожай арахиса. Танец призван поторопить сельчан к уборке созревшего земляного ореха, пока его не уничтожили шимпанзе.

Завтра команда перелетает в загадочный Тимбукту, на самый юг Сахары!

🇲🇱 YUGUBA: ANIMIST DANCES IN MASKS 👹

The MZUNGU EXPEDITIONS team began the journey across Mali🇲🇱 by exploring the western part of the country, populated mainly by the Bambara and Mandinka.

Mandinka (Malinke) are heirs of the medieval empire Mandi that was stretched from Senegal to Burkina Faso from west to east and from Mali to Guinea from north to south.

Yuguba dances are one of the most curious expressions of Mandinka material culture that have survived till nowadays.
The dances are performed with masks. Traditionally, masks only appeared on special occasions.

The expedition team attended the ritual dances in the scenic place near the Mandingo cliffs.
Mandinka performed with 4 changes of masks (and also costumes).

The YUGUBA mask (white straw-like suit) symbolizes happiness. The dance is performed for special ceremonies.

The NAMA mask (dark green infernal costume) is a symbol of winter. The dance is performed to alert the village of the coming rainy season.

The UORONI mask (a lush white suit with multi-colored splashes) symbolizes farming and fertility. The dance encourages residents to go to field works.

The CHAMPANZE mask (black monkey costume) symbolizes the peanut harvest. The dance is designed to rush the villagers to harvest ripe peanuts before it is devoured by chimpanzees.

Tomorrow the team will fly to the mysterious Timbuktu, on the very edge of the Sahara!

Друзья, делимся с вами некоторыми фотографиями народа мандинка (малинке), которых наша экспедиция встретила в деревнях и на рынках в Западном Мали, близ Сиби.

Мандинка составляют большинство в западной части страны, а также в пограничных районах соседних Сенегала, Гамбии, Гвинеи, Кот-д’Ивуара, Буркина-Фасо и Гвинеи-Бисау.

Ранее общество делилось на свободных (хорон) - земледельцев, воинов, охотников; членов ремесленных каст - кузнецов (нуму) и их жён-горшечниц, кожевенников (каранке), сказителей-гриотов (дьели), мусульманских сказителей (фина); несвободных (дьон). Однако сейчас кастовые различия, тайные союзы и другие древние институты постепенно исчезают.

Dear friends, we are sharing with you some photographs of the Mandinka (Malinke) people, whom our team met in the villages and markets of West Mali, near Sibi.

Mandinka form the majority in the western part of the country, as well as in the border areas of neighboring Senegal, Gambia, Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Guinea-Bissau.

Previously, the society was divided into free people (khoron) - farmers, warriors, hunters; members of craft castes - blacksmiths (numu) and their wives-potters, tanners (karanke), griot storytellers (dyeli), Muslim storytellers (fina); slaves (dyon). However, now caste differences, secret alliances and other ancient institutions are gradually disappearing.

🇲🇱 ДОГОНЫ: ПРИШЕЛЬЦЫ С СИРИУСА 🪐

Открытые для посещений европейскими этнографами в начале 20-го века догоны, настолько выбивались из общего ряда, что породили целую концепцию об их неземном происхождении.

Поводом для этого стали выводы изучавшего догонов французского этнолога Марселя Гриоля и других его соотечественников.
Ученые раскрыли догонское видение Вселенной, творения бога Аммы. Среди прочего, они сообщили, что старейшины племени знают о существовании спутников Юпитера, колец Сатурна, невидимой звезды Сириус В и многое другое. Эта сенсационная информация была массово растиражирована как доказательство посещения земли инопланетянами.

Однако этнографы, посетившие догонов в более позднее время, эту информацию не подтвердили. Термин «сиги толо», который, по мнению Гриоля, относится к Сириусу, на самом деле обозначает любое светило, включая Венеру и Солнце. За 11 лет исследования племени этнографы не обнаружили никаких следов «тайных знаний», хотя общались также и с собеседниками Гриоля.

🇲🇱DOGONS: ALIENS FROM SIRIUS 🪐

Dogons, opened for visiting by European ethnographers at the beginning of the 20th century, were so out of character that they gave rise to a concept of their unearthly origin.

The reason for this was the conclusions of the French ethnologist Marcel Griaule and his compatriots, who studied Dogons.

Scientists have revealed the Dogon vision of the Universe, the creation of the god Amma. Among other things, they reported that the tribal elders were aware of the existence of Jupiter's moons, the rings of Saturn, the invisible star Sirius B, and more. This sensational information was massively replicated as evidence of aliens visiting the Earth.

However, ethnographers who visited the Dogon at a later time did not confirm this information. The term "sigi tolo", which, according to Griaule, refers to Sirius, actually means any star, including Venus and the Sun. For 11 years of researching the tribe, ethnographers have not found any traces of "secret knowledge", although they also communicated with Griaule’s companions.

Хотя официальная религия туарегов, населяющих пустынные области Нигера, Мали и некоторых других стран Сахары – ислам, он изрядно смешан с традиционными, существовавшими ранее, верованиями и системами. Например, такими как матрилинейность и элементы матриархата (как мы знаем, в доисторическую эпоху, матриархат был повсеместно).

Женщины туареги имеют более высокий социальный статус в обществе по сравнению с женщинами других берберских племён и арабов. Большинство женщин умеют читать и писать, в то время как мужчины зачастую неграмотные и занимаются в основном выпасом скота и другими мужскими делами. Although the official religion of Tuareg people of Niger, Mali and some other countries in Sahara is Islam, it is fairly mixed with their traditional beliefs and systems, for example, matrilinearity and elements of matriarchy (as we know, in the prehistoric era, matriarchy was everywhere).

Tuareg women have a higher social status in society compared to women of other Berber tribes and Arabs. Most women can read and write, while men are often illiterate and are mainly engaged in cattle grazing and other men's routine. Tuareg women do not cover their face, as required by the Muslim religion, but Tuareg men traditionally wear a turban covering their faces, called tagelmust.
Tagelmust is a gift from father, which young men put on during the rite of passage to manhood and never take off in public.

Tagelmust is traditionally dyed with natural indigo dye. Such a turban colors the face and body, for which the Tuaregs got their second name "blue people" or "indigo people."

MZUNGU EXPEDITIONS отправились со своей второй в этом году экспедицией в Мали - безусловно, одну из интереснейших африканских стран.

Команда передаёт привет из Дженне, городка в северной части страны, целиком представляющего собой объект Всемирного наследия ЮНЕСКО. Предметом охраны и Всемирного достояния являются традиционные глинобитные здания Дженне, сделанные из банко - смеси грязи (глины), соломы и коровьего навоза.
Самым большим и известным глинобитным зданием в мире является Великая мечеть Дженне.

В средние века Дженне играл огромную роль в транссахарской торговле и распространении ислама в Африке, выступая одним из главных культурных центров в Северной Африке, наряду с Тимбукту, Агадезом и Гао.

В сезон разлива реки Бани Дженне оказывается полностью окружённым водой, представляя собой остров. На острове и в прилегающих к нему деревнях компактно живут представители племён фулани, бозо и бамбара.

В городе открытая канализация, нет автомобильных дорог и современных зданий. Если бы не мотобайки и линии электропередач, вполне можно было бы почувствовать себя в настоящем средневековом городе.

🇲🇱MALI. MZUNGU EXPEDITIONS IN DJENNE🛕

MZUNGU EXPEDITIONS runs it’s second expedition in this year to Mali - undoubtedly one of the most interesting African countries.

The team says hello from Djenne, a town in the northern part of the country that is entirely a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Djenne's traditional adobe buildings, made from banco - a mixture of mud (clay), straw and cow dung, are subjects of protection and World Heritage.
The largest and most famous adobe building in the world is the Djenne’s Great Mosque.

In the Middle Ages, Djenne played a huge role in the trans-Saharan trade and the spread of Islam in Africa, serving as one of the main cultural centers in North Africa, along with Timbuktu, Agadez and Gao.

During the flood season of the Bani River, Djenne is completely surrounded by water, forming an island. Representatives of the Fulani, Bozo and Bambara tribes live compactly on the island and in the villages adjacent to it.

The city has an open sewerage system, there are no roads and modern buildings. If it were not for motorbikes and power lines, it would be quite possible to feel like in a real medieval city.

Команда MZUNGU EXPEDITIONS посетила деревни племени фулани (фульбе) в районе города Дженне в Мали. Здесь фулани составляют большинство, после того как в 15 веке, с приходом ислама, они вытеснили на юг бамбара.

Фулани повсеместно практикуют татуирование лица, которое может значительно отличаться от региона к региону.
В Мали принята яркая (порой вульгарная) татуировка вокруг рта, которая делается исключительно для красоты (а значит, и для самоидентификации племени), поскольку чёрный цвет губ подчёркивает белизну зубов - один из важнейших критериев красоты у фулани.

Интересны татуировки фулани около глаз, которые имеют огромное значение для определения социального статуса. Две риски (короткие полоски) по краям от глаз означают количество родителей (один или два). Полоска под левым глазом означает, что мать обладателя такой татуировки происходит из римайбе - сословия рабов фулани, превратившихся в самостоятельную этническую группу. Рабовладение в Дженне и окрестных деревнях по-прежнему существует. Причём не на бумаге, но фактически. Традиции этого настолько сильны, что рабы не оставляют своих хозяев по своей воле.

🇲🇱 TRADITIONS: FACE ID AND FULANI’S SLAVES

The MZUNGU EXPEDITIONS team visited the villages of the Fulani (Fulbe) tribe in the Djenne area of ​​Mali. The Fulani are the majority here, after in the 15th century, with the advent of Islam, they drove the Bambara to the south.

The Fulani have a widespread practice of facial tattooing, which can vary significantly from region to region.
In Mali, a bright (sometimes vulgar) tattoo around the mouth is adopted, which is done solely for beauty (and therefore for the self-identification of the tribe), since the black color of the lips emphasizes the whiteness of the teeth - one of the most important criteria of beauty for the Fulani.

There are interesting Fulani tattoos around the eyes, which are of great importance for determining social status. Two risks (short stripes) along the edges of the eyes indicate the number of parents (one or two). The stripe under the left eye means that the mother of this tattoo owner comes from the Rimaibe - the class of Fulani slaves who have turned into an independent ethnic group. The stripe under the right eye means that the father comes from the Rimaibe.

Slavery still exists in Djenne and the surrounding villages. And not on paper, but in fact. The tradition of this is so strong that slaves do not leave their masters at will.
Even our guide has a slave who lives with his family. All family members treat him like a friend. Children are brought up in an appropriate way and do not perceive him otherwise than as family members, although they have the right to give him separate assignments.

The Dogon processions and masked dances are held in connection with funerals, initiation ceremonies, and other ritual processions, as well as the start of agricultural work, annual rituals in honor of the pagan Dogon gods, and other ceremonial occasions.

Below is a description of the basic masks of the Dogon. The meaning of masks is often very philosophical and subject to ambiguous interpretation.

KANAGA is a basic and ancient Dogon mask depicting a Dogon-sacred crocodile, on which the Dogon is believed to have swam the Niger River during their exodus from the Mande lands to Bandiagara.
There is a symbolic cross on the head, the upper part of which is directed to the sky (where it is raining) and the lower part to the ground (where the Dogon cultivate their fields). Between them, there is the human mind of the Dogon. It represents the balance between earth and heaven, the system of the Dogon universe.

At the beginning of Mali’s independence, Kananga figure was placed on its national flag, but was later removed.

LASUGONJE or BEDE is a unique female mask. Women are strictly forbidden to participate in masquerades. According to the belief, if a woman wears a costume, she will surely die soon. The only exception is a girl who is an orphan. She is the one who is allowed to dance and is given a black mask that resembles mask of an executioner or otherwise covers the woman’s face. There are often elements symbolizing women, such as breasts or long hair.

UALU - a mask of a guard, a local policeman, with horns of a goat. Guards during the dance scare away children and women. Both are prohibited from attending ceremonies.
According to another version, ualu is an image of an antelope as a symbol of fertility (antelope is also a symbol of fertility in Bambara). The dance mimics the behavior of the antelope, the dancer holds in his hands two short sticks with which he scratches the ground in a dance, like an antelope during the mating period. These actions are also reminiscent of men cultivating the land in the fields.

TENGE-TANGA is the mask of a dancer on stilts. Traditionally, this costume is worn by only one member, the tribe chief, and occurs during a memorial ceremony called the Dame. On the third day after death, a dance is held with this mask.
It is also believed that the stilts elevate a woman’s Bede mask, thereby underscoring the importance of women to the Dogon.

SATIMBE is the mask of the first Dogon progenitor woman who is called to cause rain (with the headrest in the form of a praying woman). It appears at ceremonies before the onset of the rainy season, for better harvest in the fields of the Dogon farmers. It is believed that the SATIMBE mask was borrowed from the Telem tribe, which the Dogons had displaced from Bandiagara.

SIRIGE is a mask of a «high-rise building», which represents the house of the Hogon, the priest of Dogons. Otherwise, it symbolizes 7 heavenly levels. The Dogon dwell under the Bandiagara, on the rock itself, and on the plateau above. Thus, their world has seven levels up and seven levels also underground.
Sirige is also called the mask of «snake tongue», which (tongue), according to the beliefs of Dogons, purifies the Hogon. The serpent is sacred to the Dogon (the god Namma is depicted as a snake) and takes care of the Hogon, as in the Dogon culture they does not bathe more than once a year.
