Команда MZUNGU EXPEDITIONS посетила деревни племени фулани (фульбе) в районе города Дженне в Мали. Здесь фулани составляют большинство, после того как в 15 веке, с приходом ислама, они вытеснили на юг бамбара.
Фулани повсеместно практикуют татуирование лица, которое может значительно отличаться от региона к региону.
В Мали принята яркая (порой вульгарная) татуировка вокруг рта, которая делается исключительно для красоты (а значит, и для самоидентификации племени), поскольку чёрный цвет губ подчёркивает белизну зубов - один из важнейших критериев красоты у фулани.
Интересны татуировки фулани около глаз, которые имеют огромное значение для определения социального статуса. Две риски (короткие полоски) по краям от глаз означают количество родителей (один или два). Полоска под левым глазом означает, что мать обладателя такой татуировки происходит из римайбе - сословия рабов фулани, превратившихся в самостоятельную этническую группу. Полоска под правым глазом означает, что из римайбе происходит отец.
Рабовладение в Дженне и окрестных деревнях по-прежнему существует. Причём не на бумаге, но фактически. Традиции этого настолько сильны, что рабы не оставляют своих хозяев по своей воле.
Даже у нашего гида есть раб, который живет вместе с его семьей. Все члены семьи относятся к нему как к другу. Дети воспитаны соответствующим образом и не воспринимают его иначе, как члены семьи, хотя и вправе давать ему отдельные поручения.

The MZUNGU EXPEDITIONS team visited the villages of the Fulani (Fulbe) tribe in the Djenne area of Mali. The Fulani are the majority here, after in the 15th century, with the advent of Islam, they drove the Bambara to the south.
The Fulani have a widespread practice of facial tattooing, which can vary significantly from region to region.
In Mali, a bright (sometimes vulgar) tattoo around the mouth is adopted, which is done solely for beauty (and therefore for the self-identification of the tribe), since the black color of the lips emphasizes the whiteness of the teeth - one of the most important criteria of beauty for the Fulani.
There are interesting Fulani tattoos around the eyes, which are of great importance for determining social status. Two risks (short stripes) along the edges of the eyes indicate the number of parents (one or two). The stripe under the left eye means that the mother of this tattoo owner comes from the Rimaibe - the class of Fulani slaves who have turned into an independent ethnic group. The stripe under the right eye means that the father comes from the Rimaibe.
Slavery still exists in Djenne and the surrounding villages. And not on paper, but in fact. The tradition of this is so strong that slaves do not leave their masters at will.
Even our guide has a slave who lives with his family. All family members treat him like a friend. Children are brought up in an appropriate way and do not perceive him otherwise than as family members, although they have the right to give him separate assignments.
