• Женщина
[zhen-shchi-na]
A woman
🔻The word 'женщина' was formed from the Old Russian 'жена' (wife) and came into use only in the 16th century.
🔻In the Old Russian language there was only a collective concept - 'женьство' (female gender).
🔻As for the word 'жена', it comes from the Proto-Slavic “žena,” which, in turn, was borrowed from the ancient Indian, where “zna” is 'богиня' (goddess).
Just some fuel for thought :)

• В тесноте, да не в обиде
[f tis-na-te da ni v a-bi-de]
SLT: In cramped conditions but with no offense
Meaning:
The proverb means that even small and crowded spaces will not be a hindrance if the people around are friendly to each other, show respect and understanding.
🇬🇧 Squeezed but pleased.
The more the merrier.
There's always room for one more.
Origin:
The proverb dates back to the 17th–18th centuries, when peasant huts were very crowded. In the same room a father and mother, their adult sons with their wives and children lived. But if the family was friendly, the lack of space did not bother anyone.
🔻Nowadays, the proverb is often remembered when public transport gets crowded during rush hour.
PS The song in the video is 'Коммунальная квартира' by a popular Russian band ДЮНА:
• Коммунальная квартира
[ka-mu-nal'-na-ya kvar-ti-ra]
А shared/multifamily apartment

🇬🇧 The cat is purring.
❓ Кошка мурлычет / мурлыкает / мурчит.
Which form is correct?
1. Мурлыкать
[mur-ly-kat']
1) To make a quiet purr (about a
cat)
2) To hum quietly or speak in a
soft voice (about a person)
🔻Both forms мурлычет and мурлыкает are given in Russian dictionaries as correct but мурлыкает is considered to be more colloquial.
Also:
2. Мурчать
[mur-chat']
1) (about animals) to make
growling sounds, to purr
2) Colloquial: To speak in a
grumpy tone, to mutter
So, all 3 forms мурлычет, мурлыкает and мурчит can be used to translate the English sentence 'The cat is purring.'
