Hongkongers Remember What Happened in Prince Edward Station on 31 August 2019

On the eve of the one year mark of the 8.31 Attack by the police at Prince Edward subway station, netizens called for a march from Langham Place to Prince Edward Road West.

At 14:30, a middle-aged displayed the front page of Apple Daily on August 30, 2020 which read “May Glory to Hong Kong”.

Citizen Holds "Don't forget the 8.31 Attack" Slogan High: "Hongkongers still remember their original intention"

Miss Tse, who was holding a slogan that reads "Don't forget the 8.31 Attack, Thorough Investigation of the Truth and CCTV", came to the protest alone, stating that she hopes Hongkongers would not forget what happened on 31 August last year.

Concerning rumours regarding "police beating people to death", and that the truth of what happened that day never being disclosed, Tse felt helpless, criticising the government for endorsing the police's use of violence. As the protests went on for over a year, she is heartbroken by Hongkongers' persistence despite their inability to contend with the police, stating that "we need to mourn for our dead brothers and sisters".

When asked about the number of people participating in today's protest, Tse believes it to be fine, stating, "Although it's less than it used to be, it shows that Hongkongers still remember their original intention [for this protest movement]." Tse stated that she does not fear being charged under the gathering ban 599G by the police, and stated that she had always went to Prince Edward Station to present flowers, despite "police are in the way at the MTR exit recently, so the attempts were unsuccessful. I'll go to other places to present my flowers".

Gigantic Posters in Kwun Tong Commemorates 8.31 Prince Edward Station Attack, but Quick to be Removed by the Police

Several gigantic posters were hanged outside of Kwun Tong MTR station, in commemoration of the Prince Edward Station Indiscriminate Attack on 31 August 2019: "Beaten to Death on 8.31, Truth is yet to be Told, Never Forget".

At around 22:44 on August 31, 2019, a massive number of police, plainclothes officers and officers from the Raptor squads, stormed in the then-operating Prince Edward Station. Without differentiating civilians from protesters, police aggressively assaulted train passengers in the compartments and in the concourse indiscriminately with police batons and pepper spray.

Police swept away reporters and voluntary first aiders, leaving no one to monitor the police behaviour and bear witness to the events taken place inside the station.

Not only that the police severely injured several civilians with their batons, they also barred the injured from being sent to the hospital immediately. For reasons unclear, police transported the injured civilians to another MTR station in Lai Chi Kok 1 to 2 hours later. As sets of information that did not match (e.g. the number of injured civilians and the number sent to hospitals), the rumour of "police beating people to death" has been circulating since.
