“Blatant threat”: NPC insider claims of election ban to opposition agitates democrats and law experts

The National Security Law for Hong Kong will be passed at the National People’s Congress this month. Although the articles of the law have not been announced, DAB former chairman, member of the standing committee of the NPC Tam Yiu-Chung pointed out that if any current lawmaker or future election candidates opposed the legislation, they will be in breach of the Basic Law and will be ousted from the legislature and faced disqualifications in future elections.

Pro-democracy lawmakers were “appalled” at the such claims. “This meant any opposition to any policy would be designated as an opposition to the regime”, read their official statement. “This is a blatant threat.” They reprimanded the Beijing and Hong Kong government for stretching the “red line”, pointing to the move as abolishing any function of the Legislative Council.

Senior Counsel Johannes Chan told the press that the criminal code available has already offered answer to any action forcefully threatening national security. He questioned the intentions of the legislation, suspecting the move was an attempt to control opposition to the regime apart from the use force, including censoring people’s thoughts and speech, instead of “finishing a constitutional responsibility” as claimed by the pro-establishment factions.

“I can order you to run around naked.”
Police Complained of Threatening and Sexually Abusing Protester

Last year on August 10, citizens besieged the Tsueng Kwan O Police Station until dawn the next day. 10 months later, three men were charged with illegal assembly, obstructing police officers and possessing laser pens.

The attorney of one of the defendants, a movie production assistant, raised two complaints against the police. Once the defendant was being arrested and subdued, a policeman unnecessarily pressed his knees against the defendant’s back. After the defendant was made to stand up, police officers attacked his head with their fists and other hard objects. The defendant was later sent to a hospital, where he was found to have suffered major ear injuries and experienced concussion.

The attorney told the court when the defendant was brought to a detention room, an officer abused him with foul language, and ordered him to take off his underwear. The defendant suggested to the officer that he “has no right” to that. The officer replied “since you are here, that means I can order you to run around naked. How dare you say I have no right?” During the incident, there were three other uniform officers present but did not interfere.

The defendant eventually took off his underwear. One of the officers then used his fingers to tease the defendant’s genitals, while castigating the defendant as “a cockroach”. During the interrogation, the same officer threatened to hit the defendant’s face multiple times, with his fist stopping short in front of the defendant’s face.

As the attorney describe the two complaints, the defendant was seen crying from his seat. The complaints were accepted by the court and recorded.

Hong Kong Restaurant Gives Free #Candles On the Eve of #June4 Commemoration Day

On June 3, 2021, the restaurant Villa Villa Cafe & Bar, located in North Point, Hong Kong, placed boxes of candle for customers and passersby to take.

The annual candlelight vigil in commemoration of the June 4th #TiananmenMassacre has been banned by the Hong Kong police for the second year. The organizer who had been holding the #vigil in #VictoriaPark since 1990 called on Hongkongers to commemorate the pro-democracy victims of the brutal crackdown by the CCP "in each of their own way".

In their facebook page on June 2, 2021, Villa Villa Cafe & Bar wrote that they "made a wrong order of birthday candles". The restaurant welcomed fellow citizens to take them for free. The remaining candles would be donated to a church nearby.

The person-in-charge of the restaurant Mr Tse told InMedia that "everything's in the heart".
