International Bar Association Questions the Legality of HK Police Force in Crackdown on the City’s Democratic Voices
International Bar Association (#IBA) issued a statement on January 21, 2021, reprimanding the Hong Kong Police Force for cracking down the city’s democrats.
The Force arrested over 50 pro-democracy activists in early January, 2021 on suspicion of National Security breach. The Association questioned legality for the force to arrest and detain them.
The Chinese Communist Party government’s willful imposition of the #NationalSecurityLaw in Hong Kong in July 2020 has sparked questions and challenges among International legal professionals.
Mark Ellis, Executive Director of the IBA told Apple Daily that the National Security Law has shown Beijing’s attempt to hasten its malicious influence over Hong Kong.
Ellis expressed that the so-called “one country two systems” framework is in a “precarious state”. He carried on saying that the National Security Law has undermined the rule of law in Hong Kong, and it would also jeopardize the city’s position as an international investment and financial centre.
He believed that unless the Chinese government overhauls the National Security Law, the international community should consider taking collective countermeasures against the Chinese government.

The European Parliament (EU) passed a resolution with an overwhelming vote on January 21, 2021, condemning the crackdown on Hong Kong activists by the central government of China.
It warned that the EU might risk losing credibility on human rights by sealing an investment deal with China. Furthermore, the parliament called for member states to initiate “targeted sanctions” against Chinese and Hong Kong officials held responsible for the police action under the EU Human Rights Global Sanction Regime.
The 9 names include Chief Executive Carrie Lam, Secretary for Justice Teresa Cheng, Secretary for Security John Lee, Commissioner of Police Chris Tang and former police chief Stephen Lo.
Chinese officials handling Hong Kong affairs were also on the list, including Xia Baolong and Zhang Xiaoming, respectively the director and deputy director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office under the State Council; Luo Huining, director of Beijing’s liaison office in Hong Kong; and Zheng Yanxiong, director of the Office for Safeguarding National Security in the city.
The resolution said that MEPs “regret” that the EU-China investment talks were not seized “as a leverage tool aimed at preserving Hong Kong’s high degree of autonomy, as well as its basic rights and freedoms”.

The European Parliament (EU) passed a resolution with an overwhelming vote on January 21, 2021, condemning the crackdown on Hong Kong activists by the central government of China.

HK Pro-democracy Activists urge #GermanParliament to Sanction Hong Kong and Chinese Officials
A pro-democracy activist from Hong Kong, #GlacierKwong, and a German student who studied in Hong Kong, #DavidMissal, led a petition in September 2020, calling on Germany to sanction Hong Kong officials over the national security law passed by Beijing in June 2020.
As the online petition reached the required 50,000 signatures, a parliamentary hearing was scheduled on January 25, 2021.
At the hearing, Kwong urged Germany to put in place “a real and robust policy on China” and “implement targeted sanction against individuals in Hong Kong and China… to hold China accountable and honour Germany’s commitment to democratic values.”
Kwong elaborated that under the National Security Law, initiating a petition or a signature campaign, attending a hearing overseas could be deemed “colluding with foreign forces” and therefore violation of the Law.
“Drastically, the national security law erodes the crumbling pillars of the city’s rule of law and democracy,” Kwong said in her opening speech. “Hongkongers now live in a quasi-police state and mass surveillance. The vaguely-termed law overrides the Basic Law and the Common Law system.”
She also cited prevailing oppressions in Hong Kong such like mass arrests, city-wide surveillance as pro-establishment legislators proposed installation of surveillance camera in classrooms to monitor teachers' speech and freezing of dissident bank accounts and blocking of websites.

Representatives of three major parties in the #DanishParliament jointly issued statement on January 23, 2021 in support of their Parliament colleagues who allegedly assisted former legislator, #TedHui Chi-fong, to flee the city in 2020.
It was reported that the Hong Kong police are considering prosecuting two Danish MPs, namely #UffeElbaek of the Green Party and #KatarinaAmmitzbøll of the Conservative Party.

There were meeting in multiple cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Brisbane in Australia and Taiwan, to urge the international community to support Taiwan formally join into World Health Organisation, which enable the world to effectively respond to the next global pandemic.
The event was held by Australian Association for Taiwan Public Affairs and Australia Taiwanese Association, meeting in Sydney had around 50-60 people, some of them were families. A banner of “Sydney overseas Chinese Support Taiwan’s Joining the WHO”, people who participated the meeting also raised the slogan of “Taiwan Can Help”, and yelled “Health for All, Taiwan can help. Who Needs Taiwan? WHO”. There were also “packages of pandemic” had been distributed to people who participated the meeting. A package has dozens of disposable masks, disinfectant syrup bottles, handmade soap, and a small box of soap silk.
Kevin Dong, who initiated the rally, stated in the press release, “Disease is not racially divided, it does not take into account politics…we urge all the Australian be responsible international citizens, put politics aside, join our meeting for the world”. Another member Jeffrey Wang also stated, “If Taiwan can participate affairs of WHO, the death number globally and the economic trauma are totally can be avoidable”.

People hold posters such as “China fail human rights” and “Boycott Beijing 2022”, and they also shouted the slogans like “Down Down CCP”, “Free Hong Kong” and “Free Tibet”.
