Chinese Authorities Attribute Power Shortage to ‘Rapid Industrial Production Growth’, No Mention of Australian Coal Boycott

As many provinces in China face power shortage, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) has said in a statement that it was the result of economic recovery and a cold spell without mentioning the authorities’ boycott of Australian coal since last month, which commentators believe has exacerbated the crisis.

The Xinhua News Agency reported that power supply in Hunan and Jiangxi have been under pressure while rationing is in place in Zhejiang. The NDRC responded on 17 December that a rapid growth in industrial production and a cold spell had led to a more-than-expected increase in electricity demand. It further claimed that power supply had remained stable and residential consumption had not been affected, adding that it had been working with relevant departments and enterprises to ensure a steady electricity supply. The statement made no mention of the authorities’ earlier move to limit the import of Australian coal by such means as restricting high-priced coal purchases by power companies.

British MPs Call for Boycotting Beijing Winter Olympics: Uyghur Genocide Evidence is Clear, but the UK Has No Spine to Resist

The British political circle continues to suppress Beijing on human right issues in China. Some parliamentarians and dignitaries call on the government, the Olympic Committee and athletes to boycott the Beijing Winter Olympics next year.

Both UK Liberal Democratic Party Leader Ed Davey and Labour Party Member Chris Bryant urged the government and British Olympics Committee to boycott Beijing Winter Olympics. Davey indicated that the Winter Olympics would be a tool for Beijing's political propaganda. He also stated that the genocide evidence in Xinjiang done by China is very conclusive. All five types of genocide listed in the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide against Genocide occurred in Xinjiang. He accused that the British government of not daring to act is cowardly. “It is so strange that the British government has so far failed to resist. I cannot see why people would still want to participate in the Beijing Winter Olympics. In my opinion, the British Olympics Committee should urge the International Olympics Committee to hold the Olympics games in other places. Otherwise, we will boycott."

China Misuses Photo of US Prisoners to Attack International #Boycott over #XinjiangCotton

China’s state media and Chinese netizens have been attacking multiple global fashion brands, which have decided to stop buying cotton from Xinjiang after concerns over reportedly forced labour in the industry.

In a press meeting on Mar 25, 2021, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, Hua Chunying, displayed a photo showing what she claimed to be “forced labour in America picking cotton”.

It was later discovered that the workers in the photo, taken at a cotton field in Texas in 1968, were prisoners. The intention of the shot, however, seemed to be more about concerns on the correctional system and racial discrimination in the US than “forced labour” as described by Hua.

Olympics sponsors duck questions over Beijing 2022 as boycott calls grow

Multinational companies sponsoring the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games are evading questions about their participation as China comes under intense pressure over the repression of Uyghurs in Xinjiang.

As calls for a boycott of the event grow among activists, companies are increasingly being urged to take a stand over Xinjiang — at the same time as the Chinese government has encouraged boycotts of brands that speak out.

Letters from human rights groups have gone unanswered and 11 of the 13 companies that have major sponsorship deals with the International Olympic Committee that include the Beijing games did not comment when asked by the Financial Times if they were reconsidering their plans.

US broaches boycott of Beijing Winter Olympics

The Biden administration has floated the idea of a boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics to protest against the persecution of Uyghurs in China’s Xinjiang province.

Ned Price, US state department spokesperson, said the boycott was one option “on the agenda” as the Biden administration discussed its approach to China and the Beijing Olympics with allies.

Asked at a press briefing if the US was discussing a joint boycott, Price said: “It is something that we certainly wish to discuss . . . A co-ordinated approach will be not only in our interest, but also in the interest of our allies and partners.”

AP Exclusive: Full-blown boycott pushed for Beijing Olympics

Groups alleging human-rights abuses against minorities in China are calling for a full-blown boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, a move likely to ratchet up pressure on the International Olympic Committee, athletes, sponsors and sports federations.

A coalition representing Uyghurs, Tibetans, residents of Hong Kong and others issued a statement Monday calling for the boycott, eschewing lesser measures that had been floated like “diplomatic boycotts" and further negotiations with the IOC or China.

“The time for talking with the IOC is over,” Lhadon Tethong of the Tibet Action Institute said in an exclusive interview with The Associated Press. “This cannot be games as usual or business as usual; not for the IOC and not for the international community.”

Pelosi calls for the international community for a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics; Zhao Lijian accuse US to be afraid of seeing China's "vigorous development of human rights"

As international community demands for boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics growing, US Congress held a hearing on 18th, in which the House of Representatives speaker Nancy Pelosi proposed leading countries to diplomatic boycott the Beijing Winter Olympics. Chinese Spokesperson of Foreign Affairs Zhao Lijian responded on the 19th that U.S. were calling on countries not to participating the Winter Olympics because they are afraid that people from all over the world would see the "fact" of China's "vigorous development of human rights".

In a US Congress hearing on Tuesday, Nancy Pelosi proposed a diplomatic boycott of 2002 Beijing Winter Olympics, called for countries leaders not to go there to honour China. “For heads of state to go to China in light of a genocide that is ongoing – while you’re sitting there in your seat – really begs the question: what moral authority do you have to speak again about human rights any place in the world?” she said.

Relocate the Olympics or Condone Genocide

The world may finally be waking up to the horrors of the genocide being committed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) against the Uyghur people in China. The parallels between the CCP’s treatment of the Uyghurs and the Nazi Party’s treatment of Jews and other minorities are undeniable, from implementing mass sterilization of Uyghur women to interning Uyghurs in concentration camps and forcing them to perform slave labor in Chinese factories.

Thus far, the world’s response has eerily recalled the failed reaction to dictator Adolf Hitler’s atrocities in the 1930s and 1940s. Despite admirable efforts by the United States and other democracies to galvanize action in support of the Uyghurs, many countries and international organizations remain silent or feign ignorance on the ongoing Uyghur genocide out of concern regarding Chinese retribution.

Politicians push Beijing Winter Olympics ‘diplomatic boycott’ across 11 Western countries

A group of politicians across Europe and North America launched coordinated legislative actions on Monday, calling for a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

Spanning 11 countries and parliaments, the actions aim to pressure governments, elected officials and heads of state to decline invitations to next year’s Games, citing “gross violations of human rights” by the Chinese government.

In the United States, a resolution supported by the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives, Gregory Meeks, calls for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to instigate emergency measures to find a replacement venue, “given ongoing crimes against humanity committed by the host government”.

House lawmakers push for diplomatic boycott of 2022 Winter Olympics in China

A bipartisan group of House lawmakers is introducing a measure to trigger a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in China, over allegations that the country is committing genocide against its Uyghur and other Turkic Muslim minority groups.

The proposed amendment to the annual State Department funding bill, under consideration by the House Appropriations Committee on Tuesday, comes from Rep. Michael Waltz, R-Fla., and is cosponsored by Democratic Rep. Tom Malinowski of New Jersey.

"It would have a significant impact on the United States sending an official delegation" to the Beijing Olympics next year, Waltz told ABC News on Tuesday.

Scott Morrison's WeChat account suspected of being hacked, MPs call for boycott over election interference

Australian media reported on Monday (24th January) that Prime Minister Scott Morrison's WeChat official account was suspected of being hacked and turned into a pro-Beijing account “Aohua Xinshenghuo (Australian Chinese New Life)”. His WeChat team has been unable to log in since the beginning of the year. Its 76,000 followers were notified to quit following old accounts. Some parliamentarians believe this is China's interference in Australia's internal affairs in an election year, and call on Australian politicians to boycott WeChat.

The abnormality of Morrison's WeChat public account was first reported by The Daily Telegraph. It was pointed out that earlier this month, Morrison's official WeChat account had been renamed “Aohua Xinshenghuo” and his profile picture had been changed. The account description was now "providing life information for overseas Chinese in Australia".

U.S. lawmakers call for U.N. Uyghur rights report before China's Olympics

U.S. lawmakers on Tuesday urged the United Nations' human rights office to release its assessment of China's policies in Xinjiang before next month's Beijing Winter Olympics, which the U.S. government is boycotting on a diplomatic level over what it says is ongoing genocide in the region.

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet has lamented that her office has been unable to gain access to the western Chinese region to probe allegations of rights abuses against Uyghurs and other Muslim minority groups.
