#Beijing Remains Silent Despite Nuclear Pact Signed with #Ukraine

//On February 27, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin dramatically escalated East-West tensions by ordering Russian nuclear forces put on high alert, while Ukraine’s embattled leader agreed to talks with Moscow as Putin’s troops and tanks drove deeper into the country, closing in around the capital.

Citing “aggressive statements” by NATO and tough financial sanctions, Putin issued a directive to increase the readiness of Russia’s nuclear weapons, raising fears that the invasion of Ukraine could lead to nuclear war, whether by design or mistake.//

However, in 2013, China actually signed a joint declaration with Ukraine to "provide Ukraine nuclear security guarantee when Ukraine encounters an invasion involving nuclear weapons or Ukraine is under threat of a nuclear invasion."

According to a report released by Washington Times in 2013:

//On December 5, 2013 [Ukrainian President] Viktor Yanukovych and President #XiJinping signed a bilateral treaty officially pronouncing that China and Ukraine are now “strategic partners.”

“China pledges unconditionally not to use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against the nuclear-free Ukraine and China further pledges to provide Ukraine nuclear security guarantee when Ukraine encounters an invasion involving nuclear weapons or Ukraine is under threat of a nuclear invasion,” said a joint statement on the pact.

China’s official media, including Xinhua and Global Times, touted the deal with the headline “China Pledges Nuclear Umbrella to Protect Ukraine.”

Still, the Ukraine-China security pact ignores the elephant in the room, namely, that the country most likely to even contemplate threatening to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine is Russia, China’s other “strategic partner.”

In the hypothetical scenario of a Russian nuclear threat against Moscow’s former satellite Ukraine, would China keep its pledge to confront Moscow with its nuclear weapons?//

On February 27, 2022, the question posed by Washington Times in 2013 has become an actual scenario.

In a report releasedon on February 28, 2022, the same newspaper pointed out China's stance in Russian invasion of Ukraine:

//China has tacitly supported the Russian military operation against Ukraine by not condemning the military operation and repeatedly insisting that Moscow had “legitimate security concerns” with Ukraine and NATO that the U.S. and its allies failed to address. Beijing abstained on a U.N. Security Council measure last week condemning Russia’s actions, a measure that failed when Moscow used its veto.//

Barrister #PaulHarris Leaves Hong Kong After Being Approached by National Security Police

The former chairperson of the Hong Kong Bar Association (#HKBA), Paul Harris, has reportedly left Hong Kong on March 1, 2022, hours after local media said he was summoned to a meeting with the #NationalSecurityPolice.

He confirmed to Reuters that he had left, saying that he returned to see his mother in England.

Harris’ departure comes after his meeting with national security police at the police headquarters in Wan Chai earlier that afternoon.

In the meeting, he was said to be given a warning over an alleged breach of the security legislation connected to a NGO Hong Kong Human Rights Monitor, of which Harris was the founding chairperson.

The rights group has been accused by state-run media of colluding with foreign forces and playing a “major role” in the anti-extradition protests in 2019.

Former District Councillor LEE Ka-Wai covertly left Hong Kong half a year ago

By Translated by Guardians of Hong Kong, August 29, 2021 • 4 January 2022

“Many people want to fight overseas in the international frontline, but I think many changes are useful only if they happen in Hong Kong. When you are away, your impact to the public will diminish gradually. You feel powerless as the best you can do is to watch live broadcast. Sorry, we have left, not able to realize many wishes.”

Departing looks so free and luxurious. However, you don’t have so much influence when you are living in a strange place. This may be hard to imagine for some HongKongers who stay. “Many young brothers and sisters who don’t have income or saving, begging someone for accommodation, they will naturally encounter such difficulties.”

Ukrainians Show Extraordinary Bravery As Unarmed Civilians Try To Stop Russian troops from advancing near Nuclear Plants

Unarmed Ukrainian civilians tried to stop Russian convoys from entering their city as thousands of them worked to form a barricade to hold back Russian forces nearing Enerhodar, where Europe's largest nuclear power plant islocated.

#Video footage posted on social media showed that Ukrainians were building makeshift roadblocks with lorries, scrap cars and piles of tyres.

Thousands of civilians were filmed gathering on the main road leading to the town of Enerhodar, just south of the huge Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which is the largest in Europe.

#FactWire: #Sinovac limits Hong Kong’s protection against infection from #Omicron, analysis suggests

//Analysis conducted by FactWire suggests that only 16.5 per cent of Hong Kong’s population is currently protected against infection from the Omicron variant of Covid-19, when factors such as the percentage of vaccinated residents, the type of vaccine received, and waning antibody levels are taken into consideration.

This is due to the limited effectiveness of the Chinese-made CoronaVac vaccine, commonly known as Sinovac – one of the two options available in Hong Kong – against infection from the Omicron variant. Almost half of those receiving their first or third jabs in February opted for Sinovac, which may prevent severe illness but not infection.

...three doses of Sinovac may only be 36 per cent effective, falling drastically to 19 per cent after three months, and standing at a mere 8 per cent after six months.

Had BioNTech been the only vaccine offered in Hong Kong since the beginning of its vaccination programme, a protection rate of 56.93 per cent would have been achieved by the end of April, and would have reached 77.4 per cent at the end of October.//

Japan will not send government delegation to Beijing Olympics

Japan will not send a government delegation to February's Winter Olympics in Beijing, it said on Friday, a move likely to deepen tension with China.

The decision follows a U.S.-led diplomatic boycott of the Games over concerns about human rights in China, although Japan has avoided explicitly labelling its move as such.

Japan, while a partner of the United States, also has strong economic ties to China.

UK allows young Hongkongers a pathway to British citizenship

The British government announced new amendments to the British National (Overseas) immigration route on February 25, 2022, which allows Hong Kongers who were born on or after 1997 and who have parents with BNO passports to access it independently of their parents.

The BNO scheme, designed to offer a path to citizenship for Hong Kong nationals in the wake of Beijing’s national security law being imposed, required that applicants hold a BNO passport.

While the scheme allows applicants to bring relatives, including adult children, with them to the UK, many young people who have taken part in pro-democracy protests in 2019 have had to flee alone because their parents wish to remain in Hong Kong.

Acknowledging that this was creating “unfair outcomes”, Immigration minister Kevin Foster said it was “right and important” that the government change the policy to enable individuals aged 18 or over who were born on or after 1 July 1997 and who have at least one BNO parent to apply to the route independently.

He said the government intended to lay the changes to the immigration rules in September, with the changes expected to go live in October.

A Finnish Athlete Calls for help due to a Big Water Leakage in the Athletes' Village; Chinese Official Requests to Delete the Video

In addition to the game results arguments, the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics also has issues outside the field.

Katri Lylynperä, a Finnish cross-country skier, recently shared her 2022 #Beijing Winter Olympic life on #Instagram Stories. Some of the stories showed a large amount of water was rushed out like an open water tap from the ceiling of her room, flooding her room in seconds, being able to make splashes with her feet. Her room and the walkway suddenly become a "sea view suite" with indoor rain from the ceiling. She Reluctantly called for help.

She even made jokes about it, "We have a waterfall here, and the flooding issue will be solved soon".

Soon after the video being posted, the first reaction of the authority was not to solve the leaking issue but to ask the athlete to remove the post. The handling method attracted many people saying, "They thought the whole world was using #Weibo (a Chinese microblogging website)", "lmao, China has got used to deleting others' videos".

#China Asked #Russia to Delay #UkraineWar Until After #BeijingWinterOlympics, U.S. Officials Say

//A Western intelligence report said senior Chinese officials told senior Russian officials in early February not to invade Ukraine before the end of the Winter Olympics in Beijing, according to senior Biden administration officials and a European official.

The report indicates that senior Chinese officials had some level of direct knowledge about Russia’s war plans or intentions before the invasion started last week. President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia met with President Xi Jinping of China in Beijing on Feb. 4, 2022 before the opening ceremony of the Olympics. Moscow and Beijing issued a 5,000-word statement at the time declaring that their partnership had “no limits,” denouncing NATO enlargement and asserting that they would establish a new global order with true “democracy.”//

Walmart, Intel face backlash in China for avoiding imports from Xinjiang under new U.S. law

America’s largest companies are already facing a backlash from the passage of a new U.S. law that severely restricts imports from the Xinjiang region in China, where the U.S. government and human rights advocates say businesses use forced labor to produce essential building blocks of the modern global economy, like cotton-based fabrics and silicon.

Walmart Inc. WMT, +1.06%, the world’s largest retailer, is the latest in a series of U.S. firms that have been criticized on Chinese social media amid pressure under the new law to rid its shelves of products that have been made with parts from the Muslim-majority region, according to a Monday report in the Wall Street Journal.
