June 4, 2021 marks 32 years since the #ChineseCommunistParty government ordered the military to crack down on the pro-democracy civilians, mainly students, on Beijing's #TiananmenSquare in 1989.

The annual #CandlelightVigil held since 1990 in Hong Kong's Victoria Park has been banned for the second year by the Hong Kong Police.

At around 14:45 on June 4, 2021, the Hong Kong police cited the #PublicSecurityOrdinance and blocked six football fields, one basketball court, the central lawn and the running trail in Victoria Park.

The video captured how the police cordonned off the park's foodball field as early as at 14:00. More than 20 police vehicles and over 100 officers were also sighted near the park.

On the same day, the police has arrested two civilians, including the vice-chairperson of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, Chow Hang-tung, for allegedly promoting the commemorative event in social media.

Hong Kong Artist on Current Turbulent Times: "We're bringing light into darkness"

Although Hong Kong Police banned the annual candlelight vigil on this 32nd anniversary of Tiananmen Massacre, the cordons cannot put out the flames of remembrance. Many artists and performers held memorials in their own ways, keeping the memories of the truth alive.

Political cartoonist Wong Chiu-tat created an image of a burning candle, and made it available for public to use as a phone background image.

"Every time you turn it on, you light a candle," he explains the message of the art.

"In the times we're living in now, this is even more meaningful: we're bringing light into darkness."

Wong scoffs at the Hong Kong government's aggressive crackdown on the #VictoriaPark vigil, "Our candlelight had never been in Victoria park; it's in each of our hearts. No one can take it away."

"Hong Kong is Safe, but Victoria Park is Dangerous": Civilians Can't Do Sport in Park after Police Shutdown

After June 4, 2021, Hong Kong Police shut down Victoria Park again on July 1, the second time this year.

Mr. Tang and Mr. Chan had been playing basketball since 10am on the public holiday. They had planned to play until the afternoon, but their game was cut short by the police.

Tang said it ruined his day; not only could he not attend the now-banned annual July 1 march, he couldn't even play basketball. "I never thought they're [the authorities] really this scared."

"Victoria Park must have a bomb; it's a place of traitors!" Chan chimed in, "Hong Kong is very safe; Victoria Park is very dangerous!"

When asked if he thought closing the park was reasonable, he answered: "Under #NationalSecurityLaw, every ****ing thing is reasonable!"

"Without that law, Hong Kong would have turned into Iraq!" he added mockingly.

Mr. Wong from nearby North Point had been taking his usual walk in the park, and was caught off guard when the police suddenly cleared out citizens. In his eyes, he said, Hongkongers had always been "very peaceful, very rational", and the authorities needed not to be on guard like this. "They should let us relax; they don't need to be so nervous, especially on a holiday like this."

He lamented that the scenes of stunning crowds in past years can no longer be seen at the park: "It's gone for good." He said the National Security Law had strangled the citizen's voice overnight, taking away opportunities to speak up such as the rituals of the annual July 1 march. "It's a pity. It's a pity."

Arrested Pro-democracy Activist #ChowHangTung opposes Hong Kong Alliance’s disbandment: "I would choose not to lose, not to forget, not to give up, and to persevere until the last moment.”

Lee Cheuk-yan and Albert Ho Chun-yan, chairman and former vice-chairman of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, who are currently detained, issued a joint open letter on September 17, 2021, stating that the best solution for the pro-democracy Alliance is to disband.

The Alliance had been the organizer of the annual June 4 Tiananmen Massacre Candlelight Vigil in Hong Kong's #VictoriaPark since 1990.

On September 23, 2021, an "Open Letter from Chow Hang-Tung to Hong Kong Alliance (before and after)" was published on Chow's personal Facebook page, stating that she cannot see the act of disbanding any help in continuing the Alliance's philosophy.

"Please oppose the dissolution motion and give the Alliance a chance to continue," Chow expressed despite being arrested and detained.

Chow, a barrister by profession, also pointed out, "The regime has chosen to annihilate us all, so we have to choose whether to persist until the end or to bail out before it’s too late. On this choice, I would choose not to lose, not to forget, not to give up, and to persevere until the last moment.”

HK Police Deploys 8,000 Officers on China's National Day, Intimidating Journalists and Civilians

On October 1, 2021, the Hong Kong police force deployed 8,000 officers across the city. The authority claimed that they will patrol in what they claimed to be the "sensitive areas". The police also had the Golden Bauhinia Square and the Exhibition and Convention Centre in Wanchai, where the flag raising ceremony takes place, cordoned off. The day marks the 62th anniversary of the establishment of the People's Republic of China (#PRC) by the Chinese Communist Party (#CCP).

In Causeway Bay, around #VictoriaPark and the SOGO Department Store, many uniform police were standing by. Some journalists had been stopped and checked for three times during 45 minutes.

The police asked a journalist, "why are you filming the police instead of the [Chinese] national flag on the National Day?"

Hongkongers Insist on Remembering #June4th

In the past, #CandleVigil was held annually in Hong Kong on June 4 to commemorate the victims of 1989 #TiananmenMassacre in Beijing.

Starting from 11pm on June 3, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (#LCSD) of the Hong Kong SAR Government ordered to close the football pitches and the lawn area in #VictoriaPark, to "curb unauthorised assembly".

Over 100 police officers patrolled at all the entrances of the Park since 10:30pm. Some areas in the park were blocked by crowd control barriers.

Mr Sung, an artist who wore a black face mask, arrived at Victoria Park at 9:30pm. He sat on the ground with an umbrella and two e-candles, reading "The History of Modern Mime". The police stopped and searched him and asked him his purpose at the venue. He only answered "no comment".

Despite the heavy rain , Mr Sung didn't back down. He held up his umbrella and continued to sit-in until 11pm, the deadline given by the LCSD.

On June 4, 2022, more than 200 people gather outside the Chinese Embassy in London for a candlelight vigil in remembrance of the victims of the #TiananmenMassacre back in 1989.

#IsaacCheng Ka-Long, the former Vice-Chairperson of #Demosisto, and #YauManChun, a former Shatin District Councillor, were the moderated the event. Speakers representing the #UK, #HongKong, #Tibet and #EastTurkestan took turn to speak. The pre-recorded speech of #ZhangXianLing, one of the "#TiananmenMothers", were played after a minute of silence was observed.

Zhang Xianling's son was massacred at Beijing's Tiananmen Square on June 4 1989. Her son was 19 years old when killed. Zhang sent blessing to Hongkongers. Despite the suppression of demonstration and commemorative events in Hong Kong, Zhang encouraged the people of Hong Kong not to give up.

#BenedictRoger, the founder of #HongKongWatch, brought a yellow umbrella to the event, saying the umbrella were only used in rainy weather but it also symbolised the sovereignty and the power of the people who suffer suppression. He hopes people would see the UK as a shelter.

#LeeWingTat, a former legislator from Hong Kong's pro-democracy camp, also gave a speech, urging people not to give up. Under the National Security Law (#NSL) and other regulations, he foresaw the arrival of more and more Hong Kong immigrants to the UK. He encouraged those who arrived early to help others to settle and hoped to spread the situation in Hong Kong to the world.

#TserinPassang, a British-born Tibetan talked about how his parents went in exiled due to the high-pressure suppression in Tibel such as re-education camps and forced labour. He said that over hundred Tibetans conducted self-immolation to express their discontent, but the suppression by Chinese Communist Party (#CCP) regime does not cease. He expressed his will to go to his homeland hopefully in a not so distant future.

After that, a representative from East Turkestan spoke on the genocid and the need to raise people's awareness on all humanitarian crises.

Although it is no longer possible to continue the tradition of holding an annual candlelight vigil at Hong Kong's #VictoriaPark, the commemorarive event is carried out overseas and is joined by not just Hongkongers.

The assembly in London ended with three songs: "The Flower of Freedom" (自由花), "The Internationale", and "Glory to Hong Kong". The participants chanted pro-democracy slogans to voice their demands outside the Chinese Embassy.

In 2022, the June 4 candlelight vigil in Taiwan drew 2000 attendees, reaching a 10-year high.

Tsang Chi-ho, former host of RTHK's satire show Headliners, was in attendance. The Hong Kong media personality said that the vigil felt both sad and dreamy: "For a moment, I felt like I was in Victoria Park."

Lam Wing-kee, owner of Causeway Bay Books in Taipei, said that there was a lot more people this year. "A lot of Hongkongers came over [to Taiwan]; half the people here are Hongkongers."

The vigil's organizer is Zeng Jianyuan, president of the New School for Democracy Association.

Speaking to Chaser News, he said that they had prepared 1000 electronic candles, and they were all handed out that evening. "So at least 1000 people attending, 2000 at the peak. It should be the biggest turnout in the last dozen years or so."

He said that during Ma Ying-jeou's presidency, the Kuomintang had cancelled Taiwan's June 4 vigil. Since then, the vigil at Taipei's Liberty Square was revived thanks to the efforts of Hongkongers.

"Early on, it was Hong Kong students; now there's huge numbers of Hongkongers, as well as artists and scholars from Hong Kong. Their participation here in Taiwan built up the whole event. In the past few years, after the universal suffrage movement and #AntiELAB protests, a lot of Hongkongers came to Taiwan. This is why today's theme is very clear. It's about Hong Kong."

"I think today's event is successful," he said of the candlelight vigil, "but now that Taiwan is hosting it alone, it also makes me feel a little sad."
