Former Causeway Bay Bookstore Owner Was Attacked in Taiwan

Hong Kong bookseller Lam Wing-kee, once kidnapped by the Chinese authorities, will relocate the "Causeway Bay Bookstore", known for selling banned books from China in Hong Kong, to Taiwan. The bookstore will open in Taipei on April 25.

On April 2 morning, Lam was attacked by an unknown person with red paint at ZhongShan District in Taipei on his way to a cafe. The assailant fled away.

Lam told the media that the attack could be related to his new bookshop. When asked if the attack would alter the opening plan, Lam firmly responded, “the opening will proceed as planned.”

Just a few days ago, Lam received a warning letter issued by a lawyer, stating that the name “Causeway Bay Bookshop” has been registered so he could no longer use it or risk an infringement. Lam considered the incident a classic case of China influence and the Chinese Communist Party infiltration.

Dissident Bookseller Hopes His New Bookstore can be the Safe Haven for Hongkongers in Taiwan

Hong Kong dissident bookseller Lam Wing Kee reopened Causeway Bay Bookstore in Taipei on April 25.

Lam was one of the booksellers who were abducted by the Chinese authorities in 2015, for selling books censored by China in the Causeway Bay Bookstore in Honh Kong. He was illegally detained in China and finally exposed the case when he had a chance to escape to Hong Kong.

Since last year he has relocated to Taiwan. By reopening the Causeway Bay Bookstore in Taipei, he hopes to create a safe haven for Hongkoners in Taiwan.

Books quickly stowed away on the opening day, leaving empty bookshelves and warm hearts filled with hope and gratitude.

Hong Kong Dissident Bookseller Reopens Bookstore in Taiwan in a bid for Freedom and Democracy

A year after he fled to Taiwan, Hong Kong bookseller Lam Wing Kee opened "Causeway Bay Bookstore" on April 25 in the capital, just days after being pelted red paint by three men who were arrested a day after the attack.

Lam credited Taiwanese government for granting him the assistance needed in reopening the bookstore that was originally run in Hong Kong but was forced to shut down after booksellers including Lam were abducted by China.

Aside from sending 300 police force to stand guard and offer protection, Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen sent a flower basket which wrote "Let justice flow on like a river and righteousness a never-failing stream".

[Editor's note: "To Freedom” is a line from the film “Detention” which portrays life in 1962-Taiwan during the martial law era. The film won several Golden Horse Film accolades in 2019.]

#Taiwan's June 4 Vigil Attendance at 10-year high; Hongkonger: "I felt like I was in #VictoriaPark"

In 2022, the June 4 candlelight vigil in Taiwan drew 2000 attendees, reaching a 10-year high.

Tsang Chi-ho, former host of RTHK's satire show Headliners, was in attendance. The Hong Kong media personality said that the vigil felt both sad and dreamy: "For a moment, I felt like I was in Victoria Park."

Lam Wing-kee, owner of Causeway Bay Books in Taipei, said that there was a lot more people this year. "A lot of Hongkongers came over [to Taiwan]; half the people here are Hongkongers."

The vigil's organizer is Zeng Jianyuan, president of the New School for Democracy Association.

Speaking to Chaser News, he said that they had prepared 1000 electronic candles, and they were all handed out that evening. "So at least 1000 people attending, 2000 at the peak. It should be the biggest turnout in the last dozen years or so."

He said that during Ma Ying-jeou's presidency, the Kuomintang had cancelled Taiwan's June 4 vigil. Since then, the vigil at Taipei's Liberty Square was revived thanks to the efforts of Hongkongers.

"Early on, it was Hong Kong students; now there's huge numbers of Hongkongers, as well as artists and scholars from Hong Kong. Their participation here in Taiwan built up the whole event. In the past few years, after the universal suffrage movement and #AntiELAB protests, a lot of Hongkongers came to Taiwan. This is why today's theme is very clear. It's about Hong Kong."

"I think today's event is successful," he said of the candlelight vigil, "but now that Taiwan is hosting it alone, it also makes me feel a little sad."
