Police Fine Pro-democracy Activists Despite Protesting in Group of 4

On April 30 morning, police fined 8 pro-democracy activists from the League of Social Democrats (LSD) for allegedly violating the gathering ban, despite that the group demonstrated in 2 groups of 4 people.

The activists protested against the police's ban on the Labour Day march organised by the pro-democracy Confederation of Trade Unions, citing the risk posed by the coronavirus pandemic.

The LSD’s chairman, Raphael Wong, tried to reason with the police, but the officers asked him to "talk to the court" instead. Wong accused the police of using the ban on social gatherings to suppress freedom of assembly in Hong Kong. He vowed they would not pay the HK$2,000 fine and would fight the case in court.

Police Arrest Pro-dem Activists 'Long Hair', Figo Chan, Raphael Wong

Members of League of Social Democrats including 'Long Hair' Leung Kwok-Hung, Figo Chan, Raphael Wong and Tsang Kin-Shing displayed signs, demanding the authorities to restart the LegCo election. In less than a minute, riot police surrounded them, citing the gathering ban.

When the group was leaving, the police held Figo Chan and Raphael Wong and barred them from leaving.

Riot police shouted with a speaker that 30 people were marching under the lead of Figo Chan, Raphael Wong and Leung Kwok-hung. When Raphael Wong questioned who these "30 people" were, police said journalists were included.

Riot police requested the three to dismiss. When the three tried to leave again, the police shouted, “stop and stand there.” After 5 minutes, they were all arrested.

They chanted "5 Demands Not 1 Less" when brought to the police car.

Hong Kong #Court Sends More Pro-demoracy Activists to Jail: At Least 20 Months for Jimmy Lai and 22 Months for '#LongHair'

Ten Hong Kong pro-democracy politicians and activists were sentenced to jail for 14 to 18 months on May 28, 2021, after the court convicted them of organizing and joining an "unauthorised protest" on October 1, 2019, which was the national day of the People's Republic of China. Back then, the participating pro-democracy ptotesters described the day as the "#NationalMourningDay".

District Court judge Amanda Woodcock claimed that the defendants' wish for a peaceful protest is "naive" and "unrealistic".

Former legislators #AlbertHo, #LeeCheukYan and 'Long Hair' #LeungKwokHung and Civil Human Rights Front (#CHRF) convenor #FigoChan received a 18-month jail term.

AppleDaily founder #JimmyLai, former legislators #CydHo and #YeungSum, and former League of Social Democrats (#LSD) chairman #AveryNg were sentenced to 14 months in jail.

Only former legislator #SinChungKai and activist #RichardTsoi received suspended jail terms.

With their existing prison terms from other cases, Jimmy Lai and Lee Cheuk-yan are currently serving 20 months in prison in total while that of Leung Kwok-hung has accumulated to 22 months at the moment.

In the courtroom, some pro-democracy supporters chanted "fight on". From the defendants' seats, Leung Kwok-hung called out "Remember June 4th [Tiananmen Massacre]", while Figo Chan shout "mourn on June 4, speak out on July 1".

50 Hong Kong police encircled 4 democratic activists calling for release of political dissidents

Today, on China's National Day (Oct 1), Members of the League of Social Democrates (#LSD) took to the streets to protest for democracy, just as the group had done on Oct 1 in past years. Although several key members of the pro-democracy party have been put in jail on National Security charges, four other members came out to march, determined to carry on the protest tradition.

Not intimidated by the 50 police officers surrounding the four of them, Chairperson Chen Po-yin said that they will carry on delivering their mandate in defiance. "Only a few of the familiar faces (of the group) are left, which means the rest of us carry an ever greater responsibility."

In past 6 months, LSD members and vocal social and political activists that have been imprisoned include Raphael Wong Ho-ming, Leung Kwok-hung (Long Hair), Jimmy Sham Tse-kin, Alvin Ng Man-yuen, and Figo Chen Ho-hen.

Hong Kong Police Surround Pro-democracy Group Calling for Universal Suffrage on Election Day

In the past it would have been common to see protests during the #ChiefExecutive Election in Hong Kong.

It is, however, not the case anymore, as almost all the pro-democracy legislators have been jailed, coupled with the reformation of the electoral system.

On the early morning of May 8, 2022, the League of Social Democrats (#LSD), a pro-democracy group, tried to head towards the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center (#HKCEC) to protest; however, their members were stopped and searched by the police in Central Plaza, and were thereby banned from entering HKCEC.

As early as at 7:30am, over 30 policemen, all wearing stabproof vest, were stationed outside the clinic of Family Planning Association of Hong Kong in Wan Chai.

The chairperson of the League of Social Democrats Chan Po-ying comdemned the newly formed government for not tolerating opposing ideas, ‘Does #JohnLee’s “Starting a New Chapter” mean banning peaceful petition?’ she asked.

Chan also expressed that Hong Kong is ruled by fear, and that organisations often have to think twice before conducting any activity. She added that the League of Social Democrats understood the ineffectiveness in protesting, but still wished that the community was not silence. She then moved on to encourage organisations in the society to persevere, whilst lamenting over John Lee’s ‘lack of competitor’ in his run for Chief Executive, that the pro-establishment camp ‘didn’t even try to find him (John Lee) an opponent’, showing how pathetic the society was.

#NationalSecurityPolice in Hong Kong Demands Pro-democracy Groups to Cancel Protest on #HandoverAnniversary

On the eve of the 25th anniversary of the handover, chairperson Chan Po-ying, of the pro-democracy group League of Social Democrats (#LSD), released a statement. She said some volunteers working for thr group were visited by the national security police. The friends of these volunteers have also become the target of the police. After evaluating the situation, the group decide not to pursue any protest on the day.

Meanwhile, #AveryNg, a core member of the grouo who was recently released from the prison, was reportedly under the police surveilance. Ng posted the sentence "I'm in prison, if you know what I mean" on his social media page. Many associated the incident to how the Chinese police surveyed and monitored dissidents like Lu Xia before important days.

This time in Hong Konh Ng commented on his own post by saying, "I'm not being detained" and "I will be happy in the 'prison'."
