Microsoft Says Russian, Chinese, Iranian Hackers Stepping up Attacks on US Presidential Election, Calls for Increased Security to Safeguard Democracy

A report published by Microsoft on 10 September has warned of Russian, Chinese, and Iranian hackers found again to be attempting to interfere with the US presidential election. The report noted that the hackers were using more convert methods this time in their attacks on members of both the Democratic and Republican parties and associated think tanks.

As America entered the election year, cyber warfare was back. Microsoft analysed suspicious use of its products and found that hackers from Russia, China, and Iran were once again in action. Strontium, a hacker organization that has accessed and leaked emails of the former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and has ties to the Russian military intelligence agency GRU, has again launched attacks on the election this year. Besides the Democrats, the Republicans, and members of other political parties, their targets also included think tanks, advocacy groups, and enterprises. It is estimated that at least 200 US institutions related to the election have been attacked. According to Microsoft’s report, the Russian hackers have changed their methods. While they would obtain login credentials through phishing emails during the 2016 election, they have become more proactive this year by engaging in brute force attacks and password spraying, which is to break into many accounts using a few commonly used credentials. Meanwhile, they have become more cautious. They made some of the attacks using the Tor browser to stay anonymous and untraceable. This has made investigations more difficult and time-consuming.

Besides the Russians, Chinese and Iranian hackers were also on the move. Microsoft said they had discovered as early as in March 2019 that the Chinese hacker organisation Zirconium had launched thousands of attacks and compromised nearly 150 accounts. Their goal, said Microsoft, was to infiltrate email accounts of the candidates and individuals related to the campaigns. Using non-campaign accounts belonging to people related to the campaign, Zirconium directed an unsuccessful attack at the election effort of the Democratic candidate Joe Biden. Trump’s campaign has also been targeted with at least one “prominent person” affiliated with the current administration being attacked. Besides politicians, Microsoft said Chinese hackers had also attacked international relations scholars at 15 universities and 18 international relations policy organizations, including the Atlantic Council and Stimson Center. It was not revealed whether the attack was successful.

[Travel Reflections] Iranian friend worried for Hongkongers facing US sanctions

“I heard that Hong Kong is sanctioned by the United States. Is it true?” On the other side of the telephone was the voice of my Iranian friend in a worried tone.

I was caught off guard by the question, hesitated for a few seconds and then responded, “Probably yes...”

“What to do then? It’s no joking being sanctioned by the United States. Just look at our situation…. Do you need help?”

Pompeo Accused China Eradicating All Faith that Do Not Conform to the Communist Regime on International Religious Freedom Day

On the International Religious Freedom Day on Tuesday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo criticised China, Iran, and North Korea as the most seriously prosecuted countries in the world for religious freedom. He added that the three countries increased the restriction upon its people, especially for Beijing trying to eradicate all faith that violates the communist regime.

Pompeo in a statement mentioned the International Religious Freedom Act taking into effect 22 years ago on October 27, reiterating the promise on the promotion and the defence on the religious rights of everyone in the world. Pompeo stated that the US government has long been respectful the freedom of lifestyle regardless of their religion, dating back to the visions of the founding fathers of the US. He emphasised, religious and human dignity issues are of the core of US diplomatic relations, for now, and in the future.

Pompeo named China, Iran, and North Korea as three of the worst countries in the world, in terms of religious rights. “These countries are tightening their restriction to suppress their people. Worse still, China is trying to erase every religion not compatible with the communist regime.” He said.

The biggest hardware company in the world, Stanley Black & Decker closed factory in Shenzhen, China, thousands of people lost their jobs

(29 Oct) The biggest tools and hardware company in the world, Stanley Black & Decker, Inc. has suddenly noticed people about the close of their branch in Shenzhen, China on 26th October and dismissed all employees on the 28th, thousands of people lost their jobs in one blink. Besides the brand in Shenzhen, Stanley Black & Decker also dismissed their subsidiary, Black & Decker, in Shenzhen at the same time.

According to the media, Black & Decker is the subsidiary of Stanley Black & Decker, registered in China with 10 million USD in 2012, mainly manufacturing products like electric tools and vacuum cleaner, and had more than 1000 full-time employees. They were listed as the 228th in the top 500 American companies, also the biggest tools and hardware manufacturing company.

This act by Stanley Black & Decker has shaken up the industry, they explained the reason for dismissing Black & Decker in Shenzhen is “following the overall change of the market and the increasing competitors, the group has to reorganize resources and maintain market competitiveness based in strategies.”

However, there are different opinions outside. Some Chinese media thinks that Shenzhen has re-started working long ago, a big possibility is because of the trade war tariff issues between the US and China, that it has forced Stanley Black & Decker to move out of China.

The Radio Free China (RFA) thinks that since the outbreak of the trade war between the US and China, there were already a lot of foreign companies moving out from China to Southeast Asia, while it was difficult for Stanley Black & Decker as they are export-oriented, especially China could not stop infringement effectively, forcing Stanley Black & Decker to make the hard choice.

While the Epoch Times thinks that except in Shenzhen, Stanley Black & Decker has their manufacturing factories and research bases in other places like Suzhou and Shanghai, and have participated in strikes for many times in the past 10 years, with the biggest strike that gathered thousands of people.

The Epoch Times also reported that the Stanley Black & Decker group was once deceived by their subsidiary in Suzhou, China, that they violated the sanction against Iran and paid the fine of 1.869 million USD in 2019 for the close of file. Stanley Black & Decker’s Suzhou subsidiary was originally China Guoqiang Company, but after acquisition and merger by Stanley Black & Decker, they still export electric tools to Iran 23 times, costing 3.2 million USD, and used 6 other companies to make the fake bill of lading and statements in order to hide the fact that they are trading with Iran. The Suzhou subsidiary was then found out by the Stanley Black & Decker group and reported to the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

The future of the production line of Stanley Black & Decker remains unclear.

Washington to Restrict Cloud Service Providers from Cooperating With Foreign Companies That Harbor Hackers, Targeting at China, Russia and Iran

Cyber-attack by hackers is rampant. A report said that President Trump is drafting an executive order to restrict the international operation of U.S. cloud computing companies such as Amazon and Microsoft, regulating their corporation with foreign cloud companies, in an effort to protect against foreign cyber-attack from hackers, referring to those from China, Russia, and Iran.

According to sources, the executive order allows the Department of Commerce to prohibit U.S. cloud providers from partnering with foreign cloud companies that offer safe haven to hackers and forbid foreign providers from operating in the U.S., preventing foreign hackers to conduct quick and anonymous cyberattacks through cloud service provider.

U.S. officials repeatedly accuse China of its economic and security threat. The report said that this executive order is intended to address the attack from China. It has also been reported that the measure is also targeted to deal with hacking attacks by Russia and Iran.

A journalist in exile suspected of being kidnapped back to Iran across the border and being executed

Iran government sentenced the 47-year-old journalist Ruhollah Zam, who was once in exile to France, to death because of "corruption" on Saturday (12th December). The journalist was accused of cooperating with foreign intelligence departments, sharing protest information as well as making teachings on gasoline bombs on his Telegram channel. The French government, human rights organisations, Reporters Without Borders and Committee to Protect Journalists all condemned the execution, describing it as “a fatal blow to Iran’s freedom of speech”.

Zam fled to Paris after being accused of cooperating with foreign intelligence departments in 2009. He subsequently started operating website “AmadNews” and his telegram channel, having over 1 million followers. He shared Iran protest information and scandals of Iran officials on his channel in 2017, and tutorials for making gasoline bomb. China, With $400 Billion Iran Deal, Could Deepen Influence in Mideast

China and Iran signed 25 years investment agreement on Mar 27. Iran did not make the details of the agreement public before the signing, nor did the Chinese government give specifics. But experts said it believed that China agreed to invest $400 billion in Iran over 25 years in exchange for a steady supply of oil to fuel its growing economy.

The deal could deepen China’s influence in the Middle East and undercut American efforts to keep Iran isolated. But it was not immediately clear how much of the agreement can be implemented while the U.S. dispute with Iran over its nuclear program remains unresolved.

The draft also called for deepening military cooperation, including joint training and exercises, joint research and weapons development and intelligence-sharing.

China’s soft power has ‘collapsed globally’ due to ‘anger and hysteria’

China’s reaction to the cancelling of the dangerous Belt and Road agreement in a “wolf warrior fashion” will end up being a large “own goal” for Beijing, according to the Australian Strategic Policy Institute’s Michael Shoebridge.

The controversial Belt and Road Initiative agreement between Beijing and the Andrews government in Victoria was cancelled last night by the foreign affairs minister using the new foreign relations bill powers.

The deal was amongst four agreements with countries such as Iran, Syria, and China that the federal government opted to cancel after they were deemed inconsistent with Australia’s national interests.

Canadian Media: the US Talks to Huawei about Letting Meng Wanzhou Return to China Without Mentioning the Release of the 2 Canadians

In 2018, the US alleged Huawei’s Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanchou involving in bank fraud and violating sanctions against Iran, and asked Canada to arrest her. After Canada arresting her, China detained two Canadians, Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig, accusing them of espionage. Foreign media stated this as “hostage politics”.

Arrested in 2018 but still have no decision on the extradition

The event originated from the US Department of Justice, alleging that Meng Wanchou was involved in HSBC bank fraud, which made HSBC at risk of violating US sanctions against Iran. The US asked Canada to extradite Meng to the US for trial. In December 2018, Canada arrested Meng Wanchou at the request of the United States, but whether she will be extradited to the US for trial will still be subject to a hearing.

Iran’s brave and powerful gesture is a small wonder from a World Cup of woe

Well, that was unexpected. After the cold, cold theatre of Qatar 2022’s opening game, elite sport reimagined as a despot’s light-show, something remarkable happened on Monday afternoon in Doha.

As night fell over the vast, swooping Khalifa International Stadium (all these World Cup structures are vast and swooping; unless specifically told otherwise, assume vast and swooping) England and Iran produced something that felt jarringly real, oddly warm, suspiciously authentic.
