Overseas Hongkongers Commemorate #AntiELAB Protest Anniversary in #Nottingham, #UK

On June 12, 2021, Hongkongers around the world joined rally to commemorate the second anniversary of the 2019 pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong.

The day two years ago witnessed the police's excessive use of force by means of tear gas grenades and rubber bullets on unarmed civilians rallying outside the Legislative Council Building in protest of extradition to China.

Two years later, rights and freedom are further encroached in Hong Kong as the authorities tightened their control over Hongkongers.

Hongkongers in Solidarity with #AppleDaily journalists: "We'll not give in"

On the last day of the 26-year-old pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily on June 23, 2021, its staff and journalists carried out their work until the very last minute.

Supporting citizens brought flowers, handwritten signs and letters to the newspaper office, thanking the pro-democracy newspaper for its commitment in seeking truth and safeguarding press freedom in the past 26 years.

On the site, signs that read "I fxxking love Hong Kong", "thank you for your hard work" and "thank you for walking with us" as well as drawings of apple tree were all over the place.

After today, Apple Daily will no longer be printed, but the spirit and the memories of the newspaper will be remembered by many Hongkongers.

As the supporting citizens chanted, "Hongkongers, fight on" and "we will not back down" despite the increasing political suppression by authorities.

Another journalist Mr Yu said, ever since the 5 management personnel were arrested and Apple Daily’s assets were frozen, he knew he might not be able to work in this company in the near future. So when he was told Apple Daily would stop functioning through messages, it was not ‘hard to digest’ nor ‘surprising’.

He said originally he needed to go back to work, and he planned on packing his personal belongings after work. "It is anticipated that I can’t come back here after today… after all there are potential risks coming back.’ He added, ‘I don’t know what to do in the future, there are so many changes in the world every hour, there is no guarantee if I can still write articles after leaving.’

Tears Shed at Premier of PolyU Siege Documentary in London

The documentary "Inside the Red Brick Wall" was shown in the Open City documentary festival in London on September 11. The film captured one of the most aggressive crackdowns of Hongkonger's fight for democracy during the anti-Extradition movement in 2019, the police siege against protesters in Polytechnic University (#PolyU).

Many Hongkongers that have recently arrived in the UK went to see this documentary. Among them was a pro-democracy supporters, K, who said she took part in one of the demonstrations near the university. K told reporters that the documentary has brought back memories of the crackdown and her involvement in those demonstrations.

She was very saddened because she knew that those endured the sufferings during the siege were ordinary youngsters, real people with flesh and blood. She couldn't help but shed tears as she watched the documentary.

K acknowledged that the screening in UK did provide a platform for Hongkongers to get together, so that they knew they were not alone and can seek support when needed.

She hopes for the documentary to be shown in other countries, to let the world better understand what is happening in Hong Kong. She believes that the question-and-answer session at the end of the show helped local people understand what Hong Kong people has gone through during the movement.

Pro-Democracy Hong Kong Singer #DeniseHo Live-Streams Concert, Vows to Carry On Singing

Pro-democracy Cantopop singer #DeniseHo was scheduled to play in her concert "Becoming the Song" on 8-12 September. However, just 8 days before her concert, the Hong Kong Arts Center abruptly cancelled Ho's venue booking.

Braving many difficulties, Ho went ahead to perform online on September 12, at the original scheduled time.

Ho said that it was like performing in sauna parlour, as the venue she eventually found was without air conditioning; she and her band were soaked in sweat. However, she felt that it was much more memorable experience for everyone than having a concert on a "proper" stage.

Denise Ho was thankful for her supporters. She said, "the best way to thank my supporters is to carry on singing."

Exiled activist #NathanLaw, a former legislator in Hong Kong and the founder of #Demosisto, was the first guest speaker of the event. He said to the crowd, "no matter where we are from, we are all escaping from the dictatorship regime."

He said that not only Ukrainians but also Hongkongers have been following the Russian invasion news.

"Glory HK": #Hongkongers Raise Glowing Signs amid Storm Clouds on Lion Rock

In Hong Kong, a group of pro-democracy citizens braved the heavy rain and hiked to the top of the #LionRock on the evening of June 9, 2022.

On the mountain, they displayed the light signs that spelled "Glory HK", to commemorate the third anniversary of the 2019 June 9 #AntiExtradition protest march.

When the group reached the summit, however, the hill was shrouded by dense clouds and heavy rain, with a thunderstorm warning from the weather observatory. After discussing their options, the group decided to carry through and set up the sign while they waited for the clouds to clear. Their patience was rewarded after waiting for over an hour; the clouds cleared for a brief moment, and Hong Kong's city lights come into view behind their glowing sign.

Speaking to a reporter, the organizer likened the weather atop the mountain to the outlook for Hong Kong's future: full of dark clouds, but there will be light for those who hold on to the end.

"The oppression keeps Hongkongers from speaking our minds, and even rational debates on the Internet risk violating the authority's red line; however, the beliefs of Hongkongers 3 years ago surely remain engraved in our hearts, and they will never change," said one of the participants.
