#June9 #HongKongProtests
1 year Into Hong Kong's Pro-Democracy Movement

A year ago, 1.03 million HongKongers took to the streets to fight against the Extradition Bill, in an effort to safeguard the city’s freedom and rule of law. It was the biggest demonstration since 1997 and before June 16, which sparked off the whole anti-ELAB movement throughout the whole of 2019.

Knowing the risks of attending an "unauthorised assembly", thousands of citizens responded to netizens calls and gathered at the Chater Garden after work on June 9, 2020 to fight on for the 5 demands of the movement. Singing “Glory to Hong Kong” and chanting protest slogans, the peaceful crowd rallied at the heart of the world’s renowned financial centre, flashing out Morse Code 'SOS' messages with the flashlights on their cellphones, in a bid for international attention.

1 year Into The Pro-Democracy Movement

Part 1

Moments later, large groups of riot police charged into the crowd, imploring them to disperse, citing “social distancing and gathering restriction” as an excuse.

Outnumbering protesters, riot police continued their old intimidation tactics through their dispersing operation, deliberately employing acts to intimidate the citizens. They were suspected of deploying pepper spray at close range, targeting even press and first-aiders for no apparent reasons. They were resorting to tyrannical means in order to silence any possible opposing voices; something that we have witnessed throughout the entire year of protests.

Sadly, a peaceful rally soon turned aggressive and more than 50 protesters were arrested in the late evening, with first-aiders and reporters among them.

Encouraging words from Grandpa Chan for young protesters to stay resilient and fight on for what they believe in

Calling himself a “naughty boy” who has never been able to sit still, Grandpa Chan is a well-known face of the anti-ELAB movement, as he participated in most protests in Hong Kong. He showed up yesterday evening (June 9) in the rally in Central organized in remembrance of the first major demonstration in June last year.

Chan expressed utter disappointment to the Carrie Lam administration, as it devastated at least two young generation in Hong Kong. While sharing his observations, he encouraged citizens to fight on not by their force, but their wisdom. Chan said, our fight for freedom is going to be a long journey. We have to hold on our beliefs and stay resilient.”

Actor-Activist Gregory Wong Reminds Hongkongers: "Don’t Forget our Cause"

On June 9, 2020, one year into the pro-democracy movement, actor Gregory Wong confirmed that he received one additional charge of rioting.

He posted on Facebook, emphasizing "There is No rioters, only tyranny". He expressed, "Before all the big and bad days, [the authorities] made a high-profile action just to scare away other people who want to speak, and to shift the people's focus. I believe that I am not alone. Today is June 9, 2020. Today belongs to one million Hongkongers. Remember, don’t forget our cause."

In addition to Wong, activist Ventus Lau and former University of Hong Kong student leader Anthea Suen, were also told that they now face an additional rioting charge, in addition to illegally entering the Legco chamber.

#June9 2019: One Million Hongkongers Protest Against Extradition to China

Two years ago, at least one million Hongkongers took it to the street, opposing the government's plan to implement extradition to China.

The worst fear of the local population has been the loss of right, freedom and the rule of law in the growing presence of China.

The Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill (#AntiELAB) Movement thereby began.

Two years on, freedom-loving Hongkongers have been facing unprecedented challenges upon the authorities' crackdown on #CivilSociety and #protest activities, in addition to the forceful imposition of the #NationalSecurityLaw.

Just on #June4, 2021, the Hong Kong police banned the #CandlelightVigil in commemoration of the victims of the 1989 #TiananmenMassacre for the second time. In face of suppression, Hongkongers showed the world their perseverance, creativity and solidarity to make their voice heard.

Second Anniversary of Hong Kong's Pro-democracy Movement: #Faith in #FreeHongKong on #LionRock

June 9, 2021 marks two years since the 1-million-peopled march in protest of extradition to China took place in Hong Kong in 2019.

The record-breaking turnout kicked off the territory-wide pro-democracy movement that connects the local population together and changes the political landscape of the city.

On the evening of June 9, 2021, some pro-democracy citizens climbed up the local mountain Lion Rock and displayed LED lights that read "Faith" and "Free Hong Kong". The hand gesture "Five Demands, Not One Less" and the "liberate Hong Kong" flag could also be seen.

"Local Youth Will" is a pro-democracy concern group recently established by former cabinet member of the now-dissolved students' union of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK), Law Tsz Wai; external affairs vice-president of the current students' union of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (#PolyU), Cheung Sum-yee; and former spokeperson of #StudentPoliticism, Chu Wai-ying.

The group organized their inaugural event on June 9, 2021. On the day two years ago, over 1 million Hongkongers took it to the street to protest against the government's plan to implement extration to China.

In the exhibition they are organizing in 2021, Local Youth Will aims to give voices to the detained, jailed and exiled pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong.

At a gallery called Parallel Space located in Shum Shui Po, photos, banners and art installations relating to the pro-democracy movement are displayed.

The group hopes that the memories of the #AntiELAB movement can be passed on, despite the authorities' incessant attempts to alter history.

However, just one day after the event has started, the authorities intervened by sending 6 to 7 officers from the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (#FEHD) to the venue. Despite that the exhibition is held as a private event that requires advanced booking, the authorities claimed that the group lacks the "license" for "places of public entertainment".

Law Tsz-wai, the convenor of the group Local Youth Will said they had expected that the authorities would try to interfere and they would never give in.

"Glory HK": #Hongkongers Raise Glowing Signs amid Storm Clouds on Lion Rock

In Hong Kong, a group of pro-democracy citizens braved the heavy rain and hiked to the top of the #LionRock on the evening of June 9, 2022.

On the mountain, they displayed the light signs that spelled "Glory HK", to commemorate the third anniversary of the 2019 June 9 #AntiExtradition protest march.

When the group reached the summit, however, the hill was shrouded by dense clouds and heavy rain, with a thunderstorm warning from the weather observatory. After discussing their options, the group decided to carry through and set up the sign while they waited for the clouds to clear. Their patience was rewarded after waiting for over an hour; the clouds cleared for a brief moment, and Hong Kong's city lights come into view behind their glowing sign.

Speaking to a reporter, the organizer likened the weather atop the mountain to the outlook for Hong Kong's future: full of dark clouds, but there will be light for those who hold on to the end.

"The oppression keeps Hongkongers from speaking our minds, and even rational debates on the Internet risk violating the authority's red line; however, the beliefs of Hongkongers 3 years ago surely remain engraved in our hearts, and they will never change," said one of the participants.
