Academics Demand #HKU and #HKBU to Retract their Decisions of Terminating the Contracts of #BennyTai and #ShiuKaChun

The Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) has refused to renew the contract of Shiu Ka-Chun, a lecturer in social work and pro-democracy lawmaker of the social welfare functional constituency. The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has terminated the tenured position of Benny Tai, an associate professor of law and convener of the “Occupy Central with Peace and Love” civil disobedience campaign in 2014.

The education sector has initiated a petition condemning the 2 universities, and urging them to retract their decisions. Up to now, nearly 4,000 signatures has been collected.

Choi Bo-King, former associate professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) and member of Scholars’ Alliance for Academic Freedom, condemned government for intervening academic freedom. She pointed out that the Chief Executive (CE) has been appointing crucial positions in the universities’ committee which made decision on terminating the tenured position of legal professor Benny Tai.

Hong Kong Professional Teachers’ Union vice-president of Ip Kin-Yuen also criticised the university council of HKU which ignored the opinion of the university's senate of academic staff and insisted on dismissing Benny Tai in such a short time.

Citing a survey of the Global Public Policy Institute, Dixon Sing Ming, associate ptofessor of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (#HKUST) stated that Hong Kong academic freedom was marked with a score of 0.442, sharing a similar ranking with Ethiopia. It implies that academic freedom in Hong Kong has been facing a very serious crackeddown. This reveals how the authorities is suppressing human rights and democracy movements in Hong Kong via different faculties.

Hong Kong Correctional Services Rejects Retired Cardinal's Applications to Distribute Mooncakes to Persons in Custody for "Political" Reason

Retired cardinal of the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong, Joseph Zen Ze-Kiu, have been sending mooncakes to persons in custody for Mid-Autumn Festival since 2010. He was still able to do so in the midst of the 2019 anti-ELAB movement.

However, the Hong Kong Correctional Services Department (CSD) has rejected his application in 2020 on the grounds of categorizing it as a politicised activity.

In Zen’s blog, he felt upset to be forced to discontinue this tradition of his, because he understood that this year's mid-autumn festival for the persons in custody would be less warm. They have always looked forward to the mooncakes and always asked him during visitations, “Cardinal, any mooncake this year?”

Some of them said, “At least, there are people who still remember us and are willing to care for us during this festive season.”

Pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong shared this activity on his Facebook page earlier and said he had received Zen’s mooncakes three years ago for the first time in jail. At that time, he and other inmates longed for the distribution of Zen's mooncakes.

Zen said that the activity this year was planned to be the same as every other year. He speculates that the reason behind why the the government rejected him was due to the mentioning by Joshua Wong,
Secretary-General of the now disbanded Demosisto, and pro-democracy lawmaker Bottle Shiu Ka-Chun, who is also a social worker.

Police Charge Social worker With with rioting; Precedent Ruling to Define Social Workers, Medics and Legislator's Roles in Demonstrations

Director of the General Union of Social Workers and a member of Battlefield Social Worker, Jackie Chen Hung-sou and 7 others were charged by the police for rioting at a pro-democracy rally on August 31, 2019. The case was taken to the court on September 8, 2020.

The prosecutor claimed in his opening statement that Chen not only "refused to comply with Police's warning" to leave the scene, but also "yelled" at police officers, urged them to calm down and made other "provocative remarks".

It was said that Chen's presence at the scene made it "difficult" for police to disperse protesters. By "obstructing police from carrying out their duties", Chen created time for protesters to leave.

Former legislator of the Social Worker constituency, Shiu Ka-chun wrote on his Facebook on the same day:

"Our co-worker Jackie Chen Hung-sou was charged with rioting, and the 17-day long hearing commenced today, on a day it heavily rained.

Earlier when I was standing in the criminal dock at the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts, friends of mine reminded me that I was not a criminal. This dock is not for criminal but defendant.

Today, Jackie was brought to the court for hearing, it was all of us, who are being trialed. The result will define the roles of social workers, medics, and legislators on the scene of a demonstration.

The stakes are high, and worth our attention, even amidst social distancing rule"

HK's Correctional Services Force Inmates to Undergo 'Voluntary' COVID Tests and Penalized Those Refused

Pro-democracy legislator and social worker Shiu Ka-chun revealed that the Correctional Services in Hong Kong had ordered all inmates to participate in the government's 'voluntary' universal CoVID19 testing scheme. The scheme has sparked many controversies including the government's commission of unlicensed Chinese companies to run laboratory tests and security concern over personal data collection.

According to Shiu, a jailed female pro-democracy protester, who refused to join the 'voluntary' testing scheme, was being 'punished': She was locked up in an isolation cell, with no access to TV, book and radio.
