Bruce Lui, veteran journalist specialized in China affairs and currently senior lecturer of Journalism in Hong Kong Baptist University (#HKBU), published an article recently regarding the Hong Kong authorities' arrest of Apple Daily founder Jimmy Lai among others under the National Security Law.
Lui pointed out that the Apple Daily case has been defined as a priority case by the PRC's Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office and China-owned media after the enforcement of the “National Security Law”.
Lui cited how Beijing-controlled media like Global Times and Ta Kung Po had quoted pro-Beijing reseacher Lau Siu-Kai, Vice President of Chinese Association of Hong Kong & Macau Studies (CAHKMS), calling “Next Media” an “organisation with a political stance”. It was a hint that “Next Media” is highly likely to be rectified.
In particular, Lui indicated that China state-owned Global Times has quoted Tian Fei-long of the CAHKMS committee saying, “this case may involve complicated external elements. If it is difficult for further investigation and collecting evidence, Safeguarding National Security in Hong Kong may participate in the investigation or take over the case.” It, moreover, implied Jimmy Lai might be sent to China for hearing. In the same report, Tian said if Jimmy Lai is a prime culprit, his penalty may be a life sentence.”
Regarding the inquiry of Stand News, Lui replied, “in the current state, it is not only limited to individual criminals but also extends to “Next media” and “Apple Daily” be accused of inciting a political organisation.” He believed Beijing likes to determine the nature of an incident, then to rationalise all their actions. “Global Times” has mentioned the accusation of this incident was a “political battle” and “involvement of external elements”. If it is the direction, media in Hong Kong won’t be protected by articles of the law related to freedom of speech and media operation, such as protection of news material and freedom to publish. In the meantime, the way how Beijing crackdown media may restrict daily activities and source of capital in “Next Media.”

The Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) has refused to renew the contract of Shiu Ka-Chun, a lecturer in social work and pro-democracy lawmaker of the social welfare functional constituency. The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has terminated the tenured position of Benny Tai, an associate professor of law and convener of the “Occupy Central with Peace and Love” civil disobedience campaign in 2014.
The education sector has initiated a petition condemning the 2 universities, and urging them to retract their decisions. Up to now, nearly 4,000 signatures has been collected.
Choi Bo-King, former associate professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) and member of Scholars’ Alliance for Academic Freedom, condemned government for intervening academic freedom. She pointed out that the Chief Executive (CE) has been appointing crucial positions in the universities’ committee which made decision on terminating the tenured position of legal professor Benny Tai.
Hong Kong Professional Teachers’ Union vice-president of Ip Kin-Yuen also criticised the university council of HKU which ignored the opinion of the university's senate of academic staff and insisted on dismissing Benny Tai in such a short time.
Citing a survey of the Global Public Policy Institute, Dixon Sing Ming, associate ptofessor of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (#HKUST) stated that Hong Kong academic freedom was marked with a score of 0.442, sharing a similar ranking with Ethiopia. It implies that academic freedom in Hong Kong has been facing a very serious crackeddown. This reveals how the authorities is suppressing human rights and democracy movements in Hong Kong via different faculties.

96% of Pro-democracy Hongkongers Want Legislative Election As Soon As Possible
After the Hong Kong government delayed the LegCo election by a year, the "We Hongkongers" Initiative of the Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (#HKPORI) conducted a survey on whether the Legislative Election should be held as soon as possible.
The email survey ran from Aug 31 to Sept 3 and received 14,691 replies, of which 12,293 were from pro-democracy supporters, and 1,254 support other factions. After factoring in weighted adjustments, 68% respondents supported holding the election as soon as possible, while 27% did not.
Among the pro-democracy supporters, 96% were in support; among other fractions, 36% supported it, while 55% were against it.
Dr. Kenneth Chan, a member of the Election Observation Project and an associate professor of politics and international relations at Hong Kong Baptist University (#HKBU), said that the results indicated the vast majority of Hongkongers believe the election should be held as originally scheduled.
"The pro-democracy supporters showed it very clearly. 96% of them believe they were robbed of an election." Dr. Chan blasted Chief Executive Carrie Lam for pushing back the election date for over a year, with no scientific basis. Dr. Chan stated that, as of Aug 31, over 77 countries and regions have held elections despite the pandemic. He further criticized Carrie Lam for giving the impression that that most countries had postponed their elections, calling it misleading.

Situated in Bilchenton-on-Sea in North-eastern #Kent in England, a place not familiar to many Hong Kong people, an exhibition is taking place in a local museum from Monday, August 23, 2021, onwards.
Exhibits include art pieces from two Hong Kong artists. Among them are #LauYatWai's ceramic sculptures titled “Mute Tumult of Memories”. The scupture portrays the Court of Final Appeal in Hong Kong dissipating in the water.
Graduated from the School of Visual Arts at Hong Kong Baptist University (#HKBU) in 2011, Lau specializes in ceramics.
Lau and his teacher #YiLaiKeung worked in partnership with two #UK artists specialising in sound effect to create their joint artwork during a remote residency hosted by #TheCeramicHouse.

Hong Kong Film Censorship Authorities reject two student movies citing national security violations
Two movie screenings in the 4th Ground Up Student Film Festival have been cancelled after the films failed to obtain a Certificate of Approval from Hong Kong’s Office for Film, Newspaper and Article Administration (#OFNAA).
The news came shortly after the amended Film Censorship Ordinance came into effect on 5 November 2021. The amended ordinance sets out the need to put an end to acts and activities that may endanger national security and it also allows the Chief Secretary of Administration to withdraw already-issued screening permits.
On November 19, 2021, Hong Kong Film Censorship Authority first turned down approval for #TheCage, a short film directed by Hong Kong Baptist University (#HKBU) graduate Tsoi Wing-chau. The film depicts totalitarian rule, capitalism, freedom and resistance.
Two days later, another film Piglet Piglet that sets around Taiwan's Presidential election also failed to obtain an approval certificate. The screening of #PigletPiglet was cancelled just over five hours before it was set to be held.
Director of the film, Lin Tsung-yen, wrote on his Facebook page, saying that “local authorities expressed disapproval. They asked me to cut all scenes and information linked to Taiwanese Presidential election and Tsai Ing-wen.”

Universities in Hong Kong to Implement Courses on Modern China and National Security
Under the #NationalSecurityLaw (#NSL), educationsl institutions in Hong Kong were requested to implement national security education.
Universities like the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (#PolyU), the Hong Kong Baptist University (#HKBU), the Hong Kong Education University (#EdUHK) and the Hong Kong Lingnan University (#HKLU) have followed the government order.
Recently, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) has reportedly amended their core curriculum for the next academic year.
CUHK will open online courses on "Understanding China Today", and "National Security" starting from the next academic year. Each of them takes account to 1 credit.
CUHK confirms InMedia's enquiry and claimed that the new courses aimed to "strengthen students' knowledge [...] to understand national security". The courses were authorised by the University's academic council; however, no curriculum details have been revealed.
According to the documents InMedia received, the course titled "Understanding China Today" touched upon the modernization of China and technological development, in addition to Chinese culture and history. In addition to national security education, other online courses cover positive psychology and modern language. Each of the course takes account to 1 credit.
The University called it "Service Learning" and requires students to take at least one of thrse 1-credit courses.
CUHK replies to InMedia that the university would launcb national security education in accordance with Article 10 of the NSL. The university also said that they have already rolled out a number of policies and activities to "increase students' national belonging". Orientation activities include theme talks about national security and media literacy; courses contain a talk regarding "international circumstances and China's diplomacy"; graduates career workshops consist of #BasicLaw.

Former Hong Kong Baptist University (#HKBU) students' union president #KeithFong Chung-yin was arrested in August 2019 after buying 10 laser pointers.
He has been acquitted of possessing offensive weapons, but was found guilty of resisting a police officer during his arrest and perverting the course of justice.
District Judge Douglas Yau refused to grant the 23-year-old bail while he awaits sentencing next month.

Former Hong Kong Baptist University (#HKBU) students’ union president #KeithFong has been jailed for 9 months for resisting police and perverting the course of justice, in a case linked to his purchase of 10 laser pointers during the 2019 protests.
The District Court on April 7 passed sentence on Fong, who has been in custody since early February, 2022 after he was convicted of the two offences.
Judge Douglas Yau rejected the defence’s suggestions of a fine and a suspended sentence, saying only immediate imprisonment could reflect the seriousness of the crimes.

Politics Comic Writer Justin Wong Reveals the Main Reason of Emigration
Former Assistant Lecturer at the Academy of Visual Arts at the Hong Kong Baptist University (#HKBU), as well as a politic comic writer, Justin Wong Chiu Tat, was namely criticised by the Hong Kong Police that his comic on #MingPao in Sep 2021 defamed Junior Police Call. He then apologised for the comic and moved to the UK in the end of that year.
He revealed in #SimonShen interview that his critical point to emigrate was regarding one of his research projects on the protests’ posters, happening after the comic incident. At the time, the seniors in the institution proactively reported it to the National Security Officers, possibly due to the slogans “Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Times” is shown on the poster.
However, HKBU denied reporting him to the officers and stated that they have been protecting the #AcademyFreedom, providing a suitable environment for their students and staff for research, education and learning. They added, the institution should be responsible to ensure on-campus events are complying to the law. With regards to this incident, HKBU mentioned, “the institution did not submit the case to the authority to follow-up.
