Chinese Journalists' Visa Expired in the U.S. with No Notification
The China-US tussle continues to heat up. People's Daily, a CCP-owned newspaper, reported that the 90-day visa the U.S. granted to Chinese journalists expired on June 6. However, no Chinese journalists had received any notice from the U.S. government.
PRC's Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin said Chinese journalists in the U.S. had already filed their application, but no one had yet received a clear response. Wang said that if the U.S. "insists on making more mistakes," China will be forced to make a "necessary and proper" response to insist on protecting its legitimate rights.
People's Daily said in a Facebook post on Thursday that it was the final day of the 90-day visa issued to Chinese journalists, and that no Chinese journalists in the U.S. had received any notification from the U.S. government. The post quoted Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin as saying at a regular Foreign Ministry press conference today that on May 8 this year, the U.S. drastically shortened the visa stay period for Chinese journalists in the U.S. to 90 days and required them to reapply for an extension every three months, and that all Chinese journalists had already submitted their applications for extensions, but none of them had received a clear response from the U.S. yet.

Ice cream shop owner stands up for Hong Kong protesters
A local ice cream shop owner is offering up her business as a space for people to support Hong Kong protesters demanding democratic reforms in their country. A "Lennon wall" was mounted at her store, where people can leave notes of encouragement for the protesters in her hometown.
Lennon walls which first appeared in Prague in 1980 as a tribute to John Lennon, have sprung up in Hong Kong and around the world in 2020, giving people spaces to share notes of encouragement and other messages with protesters
"There are many people out there that want to support Hong Kong as well. [This] was a chance for them to come together and do something tangible," the owner said.

Recent articles warning of social ills caused by high liquor prices, video-game addiction and e-cigarettes, to name a few, have wiped billions off index heavyweights like Tencent (0700.HK). Yet government columnists are unreliable policy prophets.
Traders are jumpy after Beijing announced in late July it would convert online tutoring companies, many listed in New York, to non-profit status. After law professor Henry Gao pointed out on Twitter that President Xi Jinping had called for something like this in 2018, Wall Street leaped to review Xi’s speeches to see what other industries he has it in for.

A B.C. judge raised questions on Thursday about the allegation at the heart of the U.S. case against a Chinese business executive facing extradition from Canada.
The United States alleges Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer of Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., committed fraud by lying in a PowerPoint presentation in 2013 to her Hong Kong bankers about the company’s relationship with Skycom Tech Co. Ltd. The purpose, the U.S. says, was to evade its sanctions against Iran.
But Ms. Meng’s legal team says the U.S. Justice Department is attempting to mislead Canada. It obtained evidence that Ms. Meng told HSBC during the PowerPoint presentation that Skycom was “controllable,” and that Huawei could therefore ensure it would comply with U.S. sanctions.

Dr Kim-Wah Chung, Deputy of the Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (#PORI) was recently invited to web media programme titled "In- and Outside the Council".
Chung described how Hongkongers entrusted the emotions from the pro-demicracy protest by cheering slogans like "Keep Fighting, Hong Kong" during the Tokyo Olympics Games.
Chung pointed out that booing the Chinese National Anthem was a misbehaviour in the past but has now become popular.
He said the authorities should "think about the reason behind it", and the responsibilities they bore.
Chung said that the PRC's national sports team performed well in recent years, but he also pointed out that "if a regime tries to cover up something through sports achievement", there no interest to show support for them".
He then used PRC athlete Chen Qingchen who swore a lot during the competition, as an example of the
misbehaviour of the Chinese sportsmen under "wolf warrior position".
Nowadays, the Chinese netizens showing their supports to Chen while publicly denouncing the artists who support Taiwanese sportsmen. Chung described it as "unreasonable".
He believed that the atmosphere in China in recent years has turned many thing in the name of "insulting China", similar to the ban on shouting 'HKers, never give up' as Hong Kong Independent", showing the extreme ethnic emotion. He indicated that the Chinese government more or less enhances this phenomenon, but the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. "It is the expansion of self-consciousness, which is dangerous."

He also called into question whether the Hong Kong officers' photographing of the protesters were aimed at gathering information about Hong Kong residents in Canada.
