United Nations recently announced that Tencent would provide a video conference and communication platform for the UN. In my opinion, Tencent is an unreliable company. The police previously tried to arrest me via monitoring my QQ chat records. My work is banned on Wechat, and many netizens’ accounts got deleted, some were detained and arrested, all because the police are directly monitoring Wechat messages. The UN isn’t aware that everything will be exposed to China.

Biased belief in CCP hurts the world: WHO is the accomplice 3/7

Secondly, in terms of severity of the epidemics, WHO did not hesitate to adopt the figures published by CCP even the situation of the contagion in China has long suggested that CCP’s figures are unreliable. Anybody who studies about China should know that it is necessary to hold reservation about official figures published by CCP, to take a grain of salt. It is a common sense that CCP overstates the good aspects and understate the problems. Throughout the contagion, even laymen can notice that the official figures of confirmed cases are snakes dancing according to the tunes with the Party’s needs. Almost everyone is acting in concert for reporting ‘zero out’ suddenly. Obviously because the Party demands “zero” case, everyone at everywhere will cover up new cases to meet the target. Eventually, State Council Premier Li Keqiang had to make a speech to forbid lies to achieve ‘zero clear out’ on 25 March. (Note 2). Since the virus ‘obeys’ the commands of the Party, obviously the official infection figures will rise and fall from time to time to fit the agenda. How can WHO take in CCP’s data on face values? At least there should be “BUT” and inclusion of opposing views to query CCP’s definition and criteria of ‘confirmed cases’ of virus infection.

We know that in just short period of two months’ time (between 1 Jan to 3 March), PRC National Public Health Commission has promulgated seven versions of "New Coronavirus Infection Pneumonia Diagnosis and Treatment Program (Trial Version 7)". In every round of amendment, the clinical and pathological definition of "confirmed diagnosis" had been played around. Zhong Nanshan emphasised that there must be a unified indicator to facilitate universal understanding of new cases around the world. China’s act opens up the possibility of falsification of numbers and records (even if it is not a deliberate falsification, at least the figures and records unreliable). Another indictor is that Tencent's real-time data system about the epidemics recorded three extraordinary large numbers. It was suspected that someone intentionally leaked the truth. Although Tencent officially denies the possibility, there is no way to dispel the doubt because the official mortality figures are far below the actual number of urns ordered by the funeral homes.

Biased belief in CCP hurts the world: WHO is the accomplice 4/7

The screenshot on the left is the number that Tencent suddenly flashed (much higher than the official number). The screenshot on the right was the number that was corrected on the next day (that is, back to the official number). Although Tencent issued a formal statement that someone was tampering with its webpage, the same phenomenon occurred three times.

WHO has an office in China. Even though it cannot get the accurate actual death figures from CCP, it is impossible that they are not aware of the incident of whistle blower Li Wen-liang (note: one of the eight whistle blowing doctors) regarding CCP’s covering up on the epidemics. WHO has a direct part in the underestimation of the epidemic’s severity when they accept CCP’s official data without reservation.

Apple closes Chinese App Store loophole, causing thousands of games to be removed

//Apple will start removing thousands of games from its Chinese App Store in July as a result of a policy that requires all paid games or games with in-app purchases to be licensed by Chinese regulators

// The action marks the end of a loophole that allowed developers to sell games on the platform while they were awaiting approval.

//The measures are expected to impact at least one-third of the reportedly 60,000 games currently listed on Apple’s Chinese App Store that are either paid or feature in-app purchases and which currently lack a license. For some game developers, that could mean losing all revenue from Apple’s second-largest app market.

//major Android app stores have enforced the requirement to have a license prior to publication in China since 2016. However, the situation with Android app stores in China is different to iOS since these are run by local players like Tencent, Oppo, and Huawei.

// Google does not offer its Google Play Store in China.

//The news of the removals comes in the same month that Apple removed a pair of podcasting apps from its Chinese App Store at the request of the Chinese government.

WeChat froze 300 thousand RMB capital suddenly
A user asked government authority to help, Authority said
Tencent has ownership of the account

(21 Jun) According to a news report from local media in China, Miss Wong in Fuzhou operates an advertising company and settles most of the transactions via WeChat. Due to suspected violation in her deal, some functions of collecting money in her account had been restricted. Afterwards, Tencent directly froze her account, including 300 thousand RMB.

Miss Wong contacted customer services of Tencent immediately and provided company details, invoice records and her identity information after she knew her account was frozen. After appealing more than ten times, the result was still “remain unchanged”. She even didn’t know which rule she had violated in transactions.

Miss Wong asked the media to help. With the help of media, Miss Wong got the reply from Tencent, “user has right of using WeChat, but Tencent has ownership of the account.

Finally, after journalist intervened two days later, the restriction in Miss Wong’s account was lifted. Tencent apologized for that and explained that was an internal mistake. After media reporting this case, Wechat has an official message in Weibo, “Remember, your money is yours.” However, netizens in mainland China were dissatisfied with this case since Tencent didn’t have the right to freeze users’ money.

Twitter and TikTok in fake news firing line

//China’s political manipulation of social media sites has prompted a swift response from the Morrison government.

//In early 2019, a delegation of senior Australian government officials travelled to Shenzhen, China, where they were permitted into a gleaming, two-towered building in the city’s far west.

//The AEC’s idea was to open the lines of communication with the social media player, recognising the platform as a potential conduit for disinformation ahead of the May 18, 2019 federal election.

//Similar meetings took place in Silicon Valley with Twitter, Facebook and Google. But recognising #WeChat’s two million-plus user base in #Australia

//#Tencent was “receptive”, Rogers says, opening the way for a “collaborative relationship” during the 2019 campaign.

//However, just over 12 months later, an explosion of fake news around the world and the rise of misinformation and foreign government interference across almost all the biggest social media platforms has infuriated the Morrison government

//Twitter released an archive of 23,750 suspended accounts connected to Chinese state-backed information operations... These accounts aimed to sow discord across several fronts — including propaganda against Hong Kong protesters who are portrayed repeatedly as violent and referred to as “cockroaches”, and in linking the COVID-19 outbreak to Hong Kong or the US.

//Twitter is banned in China, but most of the misinformation is aimed at the Chinese-speaking diaspora, including in Australia.

//WeChat has an estimated 2.9 million Australian users. Australian political parties believe the platform has the potential to affect election results in up to six federal seats, which have high numbers of Chinese-Australian voters.

//Its aim is to use Australian diplomacy... to call out disinformation and shame the state actors behind fake news.

//the use of social media platforms in Australia “that are extensions of social platforms in authoritarian states” pose a particular problem.

//foreign state-sponsored social media campaigns can be conducted at any time in response to geopolitical developments, not just during elections.

//Australia needs to spend less on submarines and more on bolstering cyber defences and weeding out disinformation from strategic rivals, including China.

//“China is also being blamed for COVID-19, so they are reaching out around the globe to try and control these narratives,”

//The government has also tasked communications watchdog ACMA with developing a new #misinformation and news quality code of practice, in a bid to reduce the impact of fake news.

India bans 118 more Chinese apps: Tencent's "PUBG" and Alipay on the list

India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEIT) announced the banning of 118 more Chinese applications on September 2, including the popular Tencent mobile game PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG). Other apps including Alipay, AlipayHK, search engine Baidu, several dating websites and even selfie-editing apps were also on the list.

In its statement, MEIT alleged that the 118 banned apps promote activities that are “prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, Defence of India, Security of State and Public Order”. PUBG is popular among young people in India with an estimated several million players.

The worst bloodshed between India and China in 45 years broke out at the border earlier in June, leaving at least 20 Indian soldiers dead. The media reported that the PLA raided with spiked clubs, but Indian soldiers met the attack with only fists and stones. The two sides fought for up to seven hours, with the conflict taking place on a steep mountain ridge, resulting in many soldiers from both sides falling off the cliff and freezing to death. Since then, tensions between the two sides have grown and eventually India announced a ban on 59 Chinese apps, including TikTok.

WeChat Becomes a Powerful Surveillance Tool Everywhere in China

WeChat has become one of the most powerful tools in Beijing’s arsenal for monitoring the public, censoring speech and punishing people who voice discontent with the government. Its dominance in Chinese society has become more entrenched in 2020 due to remote working and learning during the coronavirus pandemic.

Tencent and Alibaba developed health-rating systems for government as one of the main contact-tracing tools to contain the spread of the coronavirus. The health codes embedded within WeChat and Alipay have become essential passes in China for entering residences, office buildings and accessing public transportation.

WeChat uses client-to-server encryption, which grants Tencent full access to data between senders and recipients, as opposed to end-to-end encryption, said Fergus Ryan, an analyst at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, a nonpartisan think tank created by the Australian government.

China’s internet firewall has long blocked foreign sites and messaging apps, including Google, WhatsApp, Telegram and Facebook, but these can be accessed via virtual private networks (VPN).

“Some of my friends and clients switch to Signal or FaceTime for sensitive conversations. Still, for the majority of people, they don’t think it’s absolutely necessary to get over the firewall for daily communications,” said Zhang Qingfang, a Beijing-based human-rights lawyer.

China targets Alibaba with anti-monopoly investigation

Chinese regulators have launched an anti-monopoly investigation into Alibaba and the state market supervision administration on December 24 2020 said it had filed an investigation into Alibaba Group Holdings Ltd over “suspected monopolistic practices”.

The People’s Bank of China, China Banking Regulatory Commission, China Securities Regulatory Commission and State Administration of Foreign Exchange said they would also meet Ant Group founded by Jack Ma for “supervisory and guidance” talks.

Shares in e-commerce company plummet, with financial spinoff Ant Group also called in for ‘supervisory’ talks with authorities

Beijing curbs increasing power of tech giants, Alibaba and TenCent.

In November 2020, Ant Group’s world largest IPO was halted by Chinese authorities 48 hours before trading would have begun in Shanghai and Hong Kong.

Japanese Netizens' Different Reception of Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the PRC

During the opening ceremony of 2020 Tokyo Olympics on July 23, 2021, the national team of Taiwan was arranged to march in the stadium in an order that follows the alphabetical sequence of "Ta". It means the organizer identifies Taiwan in the name of "Taiwan", instead of the name "Chinese Taipei", imposed by the People's Republic of China (#PRC).

Although the official announcement was still made according to the denomination "Chinese Taipei", the host of the Japanese national TV channnel #NHK used the name "Taiwan".

Moreover, on the platform Niconico where many Japanese netizens streamed the ceremony, enthusiatic reactions appeared with entrancd of Team Taiwan and Team Hong Kong.

Many netizens typed in phrases like "Taiwan Taiwan", "An Independent Country", "Fight on, Taiwan", "Love Taiwan" when seeing Tean Taiwan marched in. Netizens also cheered for the Team Hong Kong: "Fight on Hong Kong", "Hongkongers Persist" and "Fight for freedom"

This contrasts with the reactions the Japanese netizens had towards the PRC team. The netizens critique China's human rights violations and political prosecutions in the past and present. Words like "Tiananmen", "Covid", "massacre" popped up.

It was also reported that China's #Tencent suspended the live streaming after the said NHK host called out "Taiwan". In the end, the Chinese streaming platform failed to show the entrance of Team PRC due to its censorship of the official Japanese host.

Chinese media’s social mania maddens markets

It’s possible to read too much into Chinese state media jeremiads. Recent articles warning of social ills caused by high liquor prices, video-game addiction and e-cigarettes, to name a few, have wiped billions off index heavyweights like Tencent (0700.HK). Yet government columnists are unreliable policy prophets.

Traders are jumpy after Beijing announced in late July it would convert online tutoring companies, many listed in New York, to non-profit status. After law professor Henry Gao pointed out on Twitter that President Xi Jinping had called for something like this in 2018, Wall Street leaped to review Xi’s speeches to see what other industries he has it in for.

No Chinese Stock Left Among Global Top 10 as #Tencent Slides

//Tencent Holdings Ltd. has lost its place among the world’s 10 largest companies by market value, leaving no Chinese company in the list as Bejing’s regulatory crackdown continues to wreak havoc on the stock market.

Hong Kong-listed shares of the gaming and social media company fell 0.5% Thursday, valuing it at $556 billion. That’s just below U.S. chipmaker Nvidia Corp., data compiled by Bloomberg shows.

This is the first time that a Chinese company isn’t among the world’s ten largest since 2017, the data show. Tencent’s unseating follows that of #Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. earlier this year, as China’s tech behemoths face tougher rules on everything from monopolistic practices to data security and kids’ gaming hours.//

Cyberspace Administration of China: Already Held 30 Large IT Companies' Algorithm Technologies

Cyber Administration of China (#CAC) indicated on #Aug12 that 30 top IT companies have submitted part of their algorithm details, such as how to collect personal data and how to set up individual recommendation content.

Companies includes #Tencent, #TikTok under #ByteDance, #MeiTuen, #iFeng, #Weibo, #Youku, #Kuaishou, #Baidu, #Sina, #Xiaomi, #WeChat, and #Tmall and #Taobao under #Alibaba.

#Bloomberg report stated that China can have full grasp of every move done by the citizens on the internet, and even all purchase detail and personal information can be seen clearly via the relevant enterprises and applications.

The CAC passed the regulations on algorithm recommendation in March this year, requiring all enterprises to reveal the algorithm used in every application.

Nominally, they can solve the issue of data misuse and enhance cyber security. But once when the authority obtained algorithm technology, they can take further control over web activity and carry out political propaganda.

They even can take "National Security" as an excuse, to obtain citizens' and companies' information.
