To those with #conscience, thank you for glowing in the dark

People always say the university is a miniature society; and even at the university, a free and fair election is impossible in Hong Kong.

On Feb 25, 2021, the management of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) accused the newly elected students' union #Syzygia of potentially breaching the #NationalSecurityLaw and cut tie with the student body.

Around midnight, the students told the press, their supporters, and fellow Hongkongers that they would uphold their stance as much as they can. They even apologize for not being able to carry out fully what they have promised owing to the University's oppression.

To all those with conscience, thank you for glowing in the dark to brighten our nights.

Razor Wire on #University Campus Stifles Freedom of Expression and Endangers Animals: "Management had Turned It Into a Prison"

A teaching staff at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) discovered that razor wire loops have been installed on the hillside of the campus.

In a Facebook post, the staff member noted that the razor wire is deployed next to a staircase that is part of the main walking path between two campus buildings, and wildlife has been frequently observed roaming through the area.

The staircase is well protected by railings, and is nowhere near the campus boundaries, so the wires offer little protection in terms of security or safety.

However, the hillside had been a favorite spot for displaying banners and flags in the past. The razor wires would seriously hamper the university's freedom of expression, the staff member noted, in addition to becoming a deathtrap for animals that live on the hillside: "Our beautiful campus was built by free-spirited youths over generations, but the management had turned it into a prison."

The CUHK #StudentUnion shares the same concerns in a statement on June 21, 2021 criticizing the move for being "clearly contrary to CUHK's values and beliefs, and blatantly disregards the safety of animals". It also criticized CUHK Property Management for not having consulted the staff and students before installing the razor wire, and had demanded its removal as soon as possible.

HK #University Management Reports Students' Union Council to National Security Police

On July 8, 2021, the #StudentUnion Council of the University of Hong Kong (#HKUSU) passed a motion to express condolences to #LeungKinFai, a 50-year-old Hong Kong man who died after knifing a policeman and stabbing himself on July 1.

The act of mourning by the Student Union has been condemned by the government and the University.

The Alibaba-owned South China Morning Post (#SCMP) cited the chairman of HKU Council #ArthurLi, a pro-Beijing figure, and reported that the university management 'welcomed' authorities to investigate whether their students has violated the #NationalSecurityLaw. The source claimed the students involved could be expelled by the University.

At 1am on July 9, the Student Union Council announced the resignation of its members and the withdrawal of the motion passed. Their Facebook page and the website were also removed.

#NationalSecurityLaw Empties "Democracy Walls" in All Hong Kong Universities

At the start of the term in 2020,
some universities in Hong Kong had installed security gates at the entrance and removed most of the pro-democracy posters on campus.

In 2021, university students' unions were de-recognised by the university management, despite being elected by students.

Pro-democracy students continued to be arrested and charged by the authority.

Meanwhile, the government imposed National Security Education on school curriculum.

In September 2021, the Stand News captured in a series of photos how the "Democracy Wall," a public bulletin on university campus where students express their opinions, looked like in 8 universities in Hong Kong.

Following the implementation of the National Security Law in 2020, only torn paper scraps and vaguely visible pro-democracy slogans can be found on these "Democracy Walls."

Looking from a distance, these boards are almost completely empty.

In Hong Kong in 2021, student unions, Democracy Walls, and freedom of speech have seemingly all fallen like dominoes in universities, surrounded by red lines.

Executive Committee of UCSU CUHK Dissolves

Following the Chinese University of Hong Kong Student Union (CUSU), the Executive Committee of the Student Union of United College, CUHK have also announced its disbandment. They said in their statement, "CUHK’s management has closed in on college students unions with threats of individual registration after requiring CUSU to do so.” And that with no other choice, all cabinet committees have now resigned, followed by the dissolution of the Executive Committee.

The statement said that the Student Union of United College had voiced out issues of injustice in the preceding decades, including those in college administration, school administration, and current social affairs. They aimed to raise social awareness and put their feet into others' shoes “outside ivory towers”. However, “there is very little room for us to practice the college motto in these times.”

The statement said that the 59-year history of the Student Union has formally come to an end, saying, “we apologise to every UCian for failing to live up to the efforts paid by previous cabinets over the years.”

They also indicated, “there are many goals and ideals we have yet to fulfill, and we are more than reluctant to end our journey here. However, we do not regret what we’ve done in the past months and would like to thank all of you from the bottom of our hearts.”

The statement ends with the college anthem, “The sky is vast and the sun remains in the sky. We must keep this pure heart, be kind, and set an example for others.”

On January 28, 2022, students’ Union Editorial Board of the Hong Kong Baptist University (#HKBU) revealed on Facebook that the university managenent had repeatedly interfered in students' editorial work.

The student board said the university had asked them to stop using the term “Wuhan virus” in their reports, interfered their coverage of the university’s national security curriculum, and asked them to withdraw copies of a recent issue of their student magazine, “Jumbo”.

The board accused the university of suppressing the students' publication, and announced that all its members would resign with immediate effect.

The university, meanwhile, decided to discontinue its relationship with the students' board and terminate students' rights to use all the facilities on campus. The university management claimed that they would take disciplinary action against the students concerned.
