Remanded Former Pro-democracy Legislator Chu Hoi-Dick: I'll never forget the beautiful times I spent working with my teammates

On May 20, 2021 in Hong Kong, former legislator, citizen journalist and pro-democracy activist #ChuHoiDick -- who was nicknamed the ā€œking of votesā€ for his 2016 election success, but is currently detained in Stanley Prison -- announced through his facebook page that he would no longer participate in politics, as he believed that he would not enjoy any freedom for a long period of time. Chu also decided to disband the "Team Chu Hoi-dick of New Territories West" group.

The group members including Yuen Long district councillor Lai Kwok-wing said the decision would not affect the community work run by individual members, as the group has never been a political party.

Chu said he is preparing for a long time behind bars, as he is currently charged in 6 criminal cases including the violation of the #NationalSecurityLaw for his involvement in the pro-democracy camp's primary election for Legco.

The statement ends with Chu saying that "he will never forget the beautiful times he spent working together with his teammates. He wishes everyone peace".

#StudentPoliticism Disbanded as Core Members Face Political Prosecution in National Security Violation

On the evening of September 24, 2021, a pro-democracy group Student Politicism announced its disbandment following the arrest of the convener #WongYatChin, spokeperson #WongYuenLam, former spokeperson #JessicaChu and former secretary #ChanChiSum on charge of national security violation.

The group was founded in May 2020, before the forced enactment of the national security law in Hong Kong. One motto of the group, according to the 20-year-old convener Wong Yat-Chin, is to test the "red line of the regime". The group had been one of the very few pro-democracy student groups still in function in Hong Kong.

Announcing the decision on its Facebook page, the group wished Hongkongers safe and peace.

June 4th Vigil Organizer Disbanded after 32 Years

After a special meeting on September 25, 2021, the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China passed a motion to dissolve. The voting took place at the now-shut-down June 4th Museum. 41 votes agreed to its disbandment while 4 votes said no.

The 32-year-old pro-democracy organization is known for holding the annual June 4th Tiananmen Massacre candlelight vigil in Hong Kong's Victoria Park. Its co-directors and core members have been arrested and detained by the police on charges of "state subversion".

When in custody, Barrister #ChowHangTung, the vice-president of the group, had urged the members of the Alliance to not disband the group, in order to stand up against the terror disseminated by the regime.

Since the forced enactment of the National Security Law in Hong Kong in 2020, at least 49 civic organizations in Hong Kong has disbanded.

Arrested Pro-democracy Activist #ChowHangTung opposes Hong Kong Allianceā€™s disbandment: "I would choose not to lose, not to forget, not to give up, and to persevere until the last moment.ā€

Lee Cheuk-yan and Albert Ho Chun-yan, chairman and former vice-chairman of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, who are currently detained, issued a joint open letter on September 17, 2021, stating that the best solution for the pro-democracy Alliance is to disband.

The Alliance had been the organizer of the annual June 4 Tiananmen Massacre Candlelight Vigil in Hong Kong's #VictoriaPark since 1990.

On September 23, 2021, an "Open Letter from Chow Hang-Tung to Hong Kong Alliance (before and after)" was published on Chow's personal Facebook page, stating that she cannot see the act of disbanding any help in continuing the Alliance's philosophy.

"Please oppose the dissolution motion and give the Alliance a chance to continue," Chow expressed despite being arrested and detained.

Chow, a barrister by profession, also pointed out, "The regime has chosen to annihilate us all, so we have to choose whether to persist until the end or to bail out before itā€™s too late. On this choice, I would choose not to lose, not to forget, not to give up, and to persevere until the last moment.ā€

#HKCTU 30th Anniversary Exhibition: "Renewing Our Minds with Each Step in the Fight"

Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions (#HKCTU) hosted "30th Anniversary of HKCTU Exhibition" on Sept 25, 2021, telling their stories with fellow Hongkongers in these 30 years.

At this instance, when we are deciding our next steps, we can see lots of ā€œleavingā€, and we are unsure about the date of reunion.

Knowing that ā€œleavingā€ and ā€œgatheringā€ is a cycle, originally gathering us from different places, and now scattering again. However, expanding our networks at different locations on this land can lead us to gather again.

In 1989, 2003, 2014 and 2019, the HKCTU marked down every step walking with Hongkongers so that we can review every historic record.

Amnesty shuts offices in Hong Kong as freedom meltdown in this once most free city in the world

International rights group Amnesty International said on October 25 that it would close its Hong Kong offices due to the China-imposed national security law.

Anjhula Mya Singh Bais, the chair of Amnestyā€™s international board, said in a statement that the two offices in Hong Kong would close by year-end, noting an intensification of a crackdown forcing at least 50 groups to disband under the law this year.

"This decision, made with a heavy heart, has been driven by Hong Kongā€™s national security law, which has made it effectively impossible for human rights organisations in Hong Kong to work freely and without fear of serious reprisals from the government,ā€ said Singh Bais.

"The environment of repression and perpetual uncertainty created by the national security law makes it impossible to know what activities might lead to criminal sanctions," she added.

In the past, Hong Kong had served as one of Asia's leading NGO hubs, with groups drawn to its robust rule of law and wide-ranging autonomy -- guaranteed for Hong Kong when control over the former British colony was returned to Beijing in 1997.

Among the groups to have disbanded this year are several leading trade unions, NGOs and professional groups, while a number of other NGOs, including the New School for Democracy, have relocated to the democratic island of Taiwan.
