Interview with a female voter outside Tse Wan Shan voting centre

Watch Video

Reporter: Why are you coming to vote at this hour?

Voter: It is a last-minute decision as I initially thought I could not make it. I decided to come to vote to make my voice heard. People of my age have been so used to keeping quiet and swallowing our discontentment. But, this time, I want to let it out.

Reporter: The government issued two statements within 24 hours to announce their disapproval of this referendum. What’s your view on the government’s action?

Voter: It is my right to cast a vote. The Government cannot take this right from me.

Reporter: Details of the National Security Law have been announced earlier today. Did you feel being pressured and hesitated to come out and vote?

Voter: Yes, I do feel the pressure. But I hope more citizens can come out to show our disapproval and solidarity.

Reporter: Then, is the announcement on details of National Security Law a trigger for you to come and vote?

Voter: Not really. I have not read about the details announced today. To me, the law is problematic so it stays problematic be it with or without details.

Union New Civil Servants encouraged by results of the referendum

Michael Ngan, chairman of Union for New Civil Servants, expressed frustration that many members from other unions, as well as himself, have been treated unfairly at work because of their political stance.

However, the fact that a lot of civil servants still came out and voted today despite measures by the government in an attempt to deter them, has made him realised that he needs to stand firm in his convictions and keep speaking out for them. He felt encouraged and promised that the union will keep providing a platform for workers to express their views. Further discussions need to be held to make plans for the next move.

A letter from Lau Ka-tung - the first social worker imprisoned for performing his duty on protesting scenes

This is Ka-tung’s letter to Hongkongers:
https://t.me/guardiansofhongkong/22727

"I am Lau Ka-tung, a dedicated social worker determined to safeguard life.

The rule of law in Hong Kong is dead. The court has become a tool for political score-settling. Hong Kong has fallen that even a social worker, who buffers in conflicts, is sent to prison immediately for one year, denying even his opportunity to appeal on bail.

It was estimated that around 50 social workers have been arrested since the anti-ELAB movement began last year. My case is only the tip of an iceberg and a start. As the first registered social work being convicted in the movement, first and the foremost, my registered qualification of social worker will be defied. I hope that elected members of the Social Workers Registration Board, which comprises 8 elected members and 7 appointed members, will hold on to this last line of defense. If anything has gone wrong in Registration Board election in the future, the whole social welfare sector would fall with no hope of reprieve.

National Security Law will soon be enacted. Facing the tyranny, continue protesting is Hongkongers’ only way out. Participating in an election is also a means of protest but should not be an end in itself. It is a pity that things go athwart as I cannot announce my consideration to enroll in LegCo election on June 17.

Nevertheless, I still hope that everyone will not forget the huge social movement Hong Kong has been going through. What Hong Kong wants is not only 35+ seats in Legislative Council, but 35 determined legislators with strong will to fight on.

Chances for me to take part in LegCo election is slim, but I know several acquaintances of mine in social welfare sector are considering. Although I have utter confidence in social welfare constituency, I still hope for us to always remember Five Demands, and this election should be taken as a pathway leading towards universal suffrage, as we have already paid the dear prices of the whole generation of Hong Kong.

In addition to social workers, first-aiders, doctors, nurses, and priests were also involved in Humanitarian support of the movement. In foreseeable future, the tyranny will continue to crack down those supporting the movement with their profession. At the moment, initiating an appeal is one of the means for Ka-Tung to continue his fight, defending mission and belief of a social worker.

Even though I am in prison, I still hope that Hongkongers will not give up. Anti-ELAB movement has not over yet. LegCo election is one of the protesting fronts in the lengthy pursuit to liberate Hong Kong. I wish to go back to battlefield with you to witness our success.

Fellow social workers, be social workers to the end;
Fellow protesters, protest to the end."

#July1 protest organiser: As long as Hongkongers refuse to forget, echoes will reach us one day

For the first time in 18 years, the Civil Human Rights Front (#CHRF) will not submit an approval request to the Hong Kong police regarding the annual pro-democracy July 1 march.

According to the acting convenor Chung Chong-fai, the Civil Human Rights Front has stopped operating since its convenor Figo Chan has been jailed in May concerning a pro-democracy protest on October 1, 2019.

Chung said the Front will elect a new convenor in September 2021.

Chung added, many groups will organize street booths on July 1: "Even if the Front has finished its historical mission, it doesn't mean Hongkongers will stop speaking up."

"As long as Hongkongers refuse to forget, echoes will reach us one day," Chung reminded his fellow citizens.

Pro-democracy Optical shop claims no surprise to nuisance and vows no regrets to exhibiting support to #AppleDaily

ipoint Optical is an optical shop in Hong Kong, known for its voluntary service and free eyewear to detained and arrested pro-democracy protesters.

On June 20, 2021, the shop placed a front-page advertisement on Apple Daily, following the police's raid, arrests and the freezing of assets.

Soon after that, the shop has been spitefully harassed, receiving nearly a hundred anonymous phone calls in one morning.

Without much alternative, the shop must stop answering all phone calls which impacted badly on their business operation. The shop called for their customers to contact them via other means.

Owner of the optical shop, Michael expressed that someone put up pro-government posters outside their shop to indicate disagreement, so he was not surprised and concerned about more nuisance.

He reiterated that he took no regrets in putting up an advertisement on Apple Daily. There were also new customers visiting them after seeing the ad, Michael said.

AIT confirms additional donation of 2.5 million doses of Moderna vaccine to Taiwan

The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) confirmed that the United States would be donating 2.5 million doses of the Moderna vaccine to Taiwan, a significant increase from the 750,000 doses announced during a visit by three U.S. senators to Taipei. The vaccine is expected to arrive in Taiwan on Saturday U.S. time, the AIT said, adding that the vaccine donation demonstrates the U.S. commitment to Taiwan as ’a trusted friend and a member of the international family of democracy.’

A spokesperson for the Presidential Office of Taiwan responded last night (19th), stating that Taiwan’s representative to the United States, Bi-khim Hsiao, had received the vaccines at Memphis Airport in Tennessee on behalf of the government and that they were expected to arrive in Taiwan on Sunday (20th).

The spokesperson said that President Tsai Ing-wen once again expressed her sincere gratitude to President Biden and the U.S. government for their strong support of Taiwan by significantly increasing the original 750,000 doses of vaccine announced on the 6th to 2.5 million doses, demonstrating the U.S. government’s concrete actions in support of Taiwan’s efforts to combat the challenge of this outbreak. The spokesperson added that the U.S. government’s timely outreach is a testament to the rock-solid friendship between Taiwan and the United States.

The Observer view on China’s human rights abuses in Hong Kong

China did not wait long to demonstrate its contempt for last weekend’s criticism by G7 countries of human rights abuses in Hong Kong. By ordering the arrest of the editor-in-chief and four senior executives of the Apple Daily newspaper for allegedly conspiring with “foreign forces”, Xi Jinping and the Communist party sent a crude message of defiance to the west.

That China’s president and his Beijing apparatchiks were responsible for this provocatively timed injustice is not in serious doubt. Hong Kong’s 2019-20 pro-democracy protests, which Apple Daily supported, shook the CCP’s power monopoly and amour propre in ways not seen since Tiananmen Square. It has been punishing the ex-British colony ever since.

China links pose a threat to academic freedom in Britain

The writer is Conservative MP for Tonbridge and Malling and chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee

Cardiff University published a job advertisement last month with an unusual requirement: prospective applicants “must have native or near-native fluency in Mandarin”. Perhaps not so unusual in a language school, but this was for the position of lecturer in music composition.

Britain’s universities have changed. Over the past decade, our higher education system has become increasingly reliant on China for a steady stream of students, research partnerships and funding.
