U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Pays Official to Taiwan and meet President Tsai Ingwen
The American Institute in Taiwan (#AIT) announced on Aug 5 that U.S. Health and Human Services (#HHS) Secretary Alex Azar would lead a delegation to Taiwan in the coming days.
Azar is the first HHS Secretary, the first United States cabinet member in six years, and even the highest-level of the cabinet members since 1979 to visit Taiwan.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan said Azar would meet with President Tsai Ing-wen, call on Foreign Minister Joseph Wu and Health and Welfare Secretary Chen Shih-Chung. He would also visit the Central Epidemic Command Center meeting with domestic health experts to strengthen the cooperation between Taiwan and the United States in epidemic prevention and health care.
Taiwan said that it is the second time since 2014 that the United States sends a Cabinet member to Taiwan, and the highest-level U.S. Cabinet member to visit Taiwan since 1979. "This demonstrates, with the joint efforts of Taiwan and the United States in recent years, the foundation of mutual trust between the two sides has been solid, and communication has been smooth. In the future, our government will build on the existing foundation to steadily enhance the U.S.-Taiwan global partnership and continue to defend shared values such as democracy, freedom, and human rights."

62nd Anniversary of the Kinmen Artillery Battle - AIT Director Joins Taiwan President at Military Memorial for the First Time
Today (Aug 23) is the 62nd anniversary of the Artillery Battle initiated by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), China, on Kinmen Island on August 23, 1958. Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen presided over the public service and memorial this morning in Kinmen. Director of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) William Brent Christensen also joined the event in Kinmen for the first time. The Central News Agency (CNA) of Taiwan quoted a source close to Taiwan’s national security as saying that Christensen is the first US director level official to attend the commemoration. The sources opined that this sent a significant and positive message that the US and Taiwan were “Real friends with real progress”.
On August 23, 1958, the PLA launched an intense artillery bombardment on Kinmen and fired more than 470,000 shells in the following 44 days. The PLA then changed strategies and attacked Kinmen on odd-numbered days for 20 years, only ceasing fire on January 1, 1979 when Beijing and the US established diplomatic relations. A public service and memorial was held today at the Taiwushan Cemetery. It was presided by Tsai and attended by the Security-General of the National Security Council Wellington Koo, the Minister of National Defense Yen Teh-fa, the Chief of the General Staff Huang Shu-kuang, the Commander of the Army Chen Bao-yu and other Taiwanese military and political officials. In addition, 73 soldiers and nearly 100 surviving family and tribe members of the deceased also attended the ceremony.

AIT confirms additional donation of 2.5 million doses of Moderna vaccine to Taiwan
The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) confirmed that the United States would be donating 2.5 million doses of the Moderna vaccine to Taiwan, a significant increase from the 750,000 doses announced during a visit by three U.S. senators to Taipei. The vaccine is expected to arrive in Taiwan on Saturday U.S. time, the AIT said, adding that the vaccine donation demonstrates the U.S. commitment to Taiwan as ’a trusted friend and a member of the international family of democracy.’
A spokesperson for the Presidential Office of Taiwan responded last night (19th), stating that Taiwan’s representative to the United States, Bi-khim Hsiao, had received the vaccines at Memphis Airport in Tennessee on behalf of the government and that they were expected to arrive in Taiwan on Sunday (20th).
The spokesperson said that President Tsai Ing-wen once again expressed her sincere gratitude to President Biden and the U.S. government for their strong support of Taiwan by significantly increasing the original 750,000 doses of vaccine announced on the 6th to 2.5 million doses, demonstrating the U.S. government’s concrete actions in support of Taiwan’s efforts to combat the challenge of this outbreak.
