A letter to the pro-democracy councilors from protesters in detention:

We are a group of detainees at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre, who have fought for liberty and freedom in Hong Kong. We are now imprisoned, have lost our freedom, are separated from our loved ones and are sacrificing our youth and future. Our young comrades in Pik Uk Prison are facing far greater torment than we are. There are also more than 6,000 other arrested protesters.

Alhough we can no longer contribute at the frontlines to Hong Kong's road to democracy, we executed what little power we had left in the last District Council election: our votes. When we knew of the landslide victory for pro-democracy candidates winning 85% of the seats, we were in a wave of euphoria. We hope the elected pro-democracy candidates will take opportunity of this bitter sweet victory to help the 6000-plus arrested protestors, who are paying a costly price for Hong Kong.

We ask all elected pro-democracy candidates to pressure the government for a response to our demands, including engaging in dialogue with the government for leniency on arrested protesters; organizing mass protests and assemblies to express solidarity with the arrested comrades; holding press conferences; and all efforts that can help and free our comrades.

We hear about the demands for amnesty for some of us. However we hope to stick together. The government should be pressed to reduce sentences so that our comrades can regain freedom sooner, thus go back to their loved ones, work and studies. We will then keep a low profile and prepare ourselves for the future.

We understand Hong Kong is still a long way from having true democracy. We ask all elected pro-democracy candidates not to let down the people of Hong Kong, or to rest on your laurels. Remeber "Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Times" is not an empty slogan. It represents the struggles we have gone through – we give our best, put behind what we have and forward we march. The road to democracy is built with our blood and sweat. There is a saying: “what millions died—that Caesar might be great!” Not a single one of our comrades should be expendable.

In solidarity with detainees at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre.

District Councilor Douglas Tsang: Police Arbitrary Arrests Have Injured Civilians

This is an interview conducted with District Councilor Douglas Tsang Tsz-ming, of Tai Kok Tsui South, at around 15:45 near Olympian City on May 16, 2020.

Watch video here.

Douglas Tsang Tsz Ming (Tsang): From what I have seen, this started at around 1-2pm. Everyone has been standing around chanting slogans without any complications. You can hear them chanting slogans behind me. I don't understand why there are so many police vehicles behind me as if there's a criminal on the loose. But everything has remained relatively peaceful and calm, so I am unsure the intention behind the police's deployment.

Reporter: Did police officers enter the mall?

Tsang: None as entered as of now. But as you could see, all are on standby there. I also saw some police officers standing at the other entrance doing stop-and-search. While I was coming here through Olympic Station, I also saw some officers conducting stop-and-search.

Reporter: Has anyone been arrested?

Tsang: None that I know of.

Reporter: So everything has been relatively peaceful as of now?

Tsang: Yes, although I heard that some arrests have been conducted in other districts. But I think that, seeing that this is a peaceful gathering, there is no need for an overreaction. What I have behind me is definitely an overreaction.

Reporter: I can see around...

Tsang: Around three police vans, two police personnel carriers, and some police cars. Is this really necessary? That's another point of consideration in our observations. Some of my colleagues stated that they saw some CSI mask-wearing plainclothes officers, which may help people distinguish them from the crowd.

Reporter: Do you think that plainclothes officers have become more high-profile?

Tsang: They have been like this for the past few days.

Reporter: What would you think the reason be?

Tsang: I'm not really sure about their intentions.Their ferocity towards civilians have increased recently, as seen from the civilians injured from the arbitrary arrests conducted by the police. This is a very bad situation.

Reporter: Has the situation called for you to partake in negotiations with the police?

Tsang: No, it hasn't, as they are unwilling to enter the mall. Thus we are here only to observe the situation as of now.

Reporter: So everything has been relatively peaceful as of now?

Tsang: Correct.

Hong Kong Government Bans Film Screening

Ying E Chi (YEC), a non-profit art organisation that distributes Hong Kong independent films, applied for a 20,000 HKD subsidy from the Wong Tai Sin District Council to hold 3 movie nights to show movies related to Hong Kong's social movement: "Lost in the Fumes", "Yellowing" and "Last Exit to Kai Tak".

However, the application was denied by the government's Home Affairs Department (HAD).

The HAD quoted the the Manual on the Use of District Council Funds that the event will result in a conflict of interest, and it will end up becoming "propaganda for individuals featured in the movies", since the three movies are biographies and documentaries.

Vincent Chui, art director of YEC, said the government requested the names of the movies after their application was submitted. "20,000HKD is not a big amount, but I am not satisfied with the procedure. Our application was initially approved by the council, but they have taken back their words."

According to the manual, funding for projects that has the potential to give excessive credit to an individual, a commercial organisation, a political party shall not get approved. However, the screening of China-made propagandist film The Founding of a Nation (2019) was funded by the Tai Po District Council in the previous term in 2018.

Chui indicated that the YEC had received a phone call from the HAD requesting to change the movies to be screened. Chui disagreed with the HAD's concern of any potential conflict of interest from the event, as the YEC is a non-profit organisation.

Chui also mentioned that the copyright fee only goes to the film directors. Nobody in the YEC will get a cut from the fee.

Ng said this means Hongkongers cannot back down anymore and should give it all out in this fight, "If our generation refuses to act, the next generation will suffer. As long as we are determined to fight against Communist China, Hong Kong will definitely restitute on one day."

HK Government Imposes Lockdown on Residential Building Despite Mandatory Testing Order Issued 1 Day Ago

#DistrictCouncilor Lai Kwong-wai spoke to the media on Feb 6, 2021, next to the "restricted area" sealed off by the Hong Kong Police on Ma Hang Chung Road in To Kwa Wan.

In response to the government's ambush-style lockdown of Wah Fat Building, the District Councilor pointed out that the building has been enlisted on the mandatory test one day ago. This means that the residents were already required to undergo #Covid19 testing, even without the imposition of the lockdown.

Many residents could not see why the government had to enforce an additional lockdown on a Saturday.

Lai also expressed concern about the elderly homes in the area. He said if the government imposed lockdown in those buildings, the impacts would be unimaginable.

From "the Leaning Liberty" to "the Almost Truth"
District Councilor Kisslan Chan Puts Up
#StreetArt Yet Again

The "Leaning characters" slogans have once again appeared on streets in Yuen Long, Hong Kong.

The street art is set up and created by district councilor Kisslan Chan Ling-lun, who used "the Almost Truth" as a theme for his new work. The art is also created from several wooden planks, with the planks arranged to show the Chinese characters for "truth" (真相) when looked at with head tilted.

Chan revealed to Stand News that this served as a continuation of his previous work "The Leaning Liberty", which like "The Almost Truth", is arranged to show the Chinese characters for "liberty" (自由) when looked at from the sides. He stated that he had at first thought that the 木 radical in 相 didn't look artistic, and had removed a dot in a flash of inspiration, stating that "there's still some distance until we reach the truth". He hoped that one day he could "add that dot in" when the truth is reached.

Chan also expressed that the recent political incidents and court cases had showed that "it's hard to reach 100% truth", and that his work expresses the values many believe in in this environment, believing that "citizens would resonate with the words".

Chan studied art in University, and hoped that art would make the public notice what is happening around them more, and revealed the release of several similar works in the near future.
