Hong Kong grills finance executives on reasons for leaving

Government agencies including the Securities and Futures Commission of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, the Hong Kong Financial Services and the Treasury Bureau and the Financial Services Development Council have phoned banking and asset management executives who have relocated to rival cities including Singapore and Tokyo, according to three people with direct knowledge of the calls.

The calls was to ask for a full picture of the decision-making process behind the moves and the significance of the timing.

While many remain committed to staying, a number of individual financial professionals or small teams have moved out of Hong Kong since Beijing imposed a national security law in June 2020, which an unprecedented legal incursion. Some felt raised the risk of doing business in the Chinese territory.

‘Disconnect between words and actions’: Australia responds to Xi

During the World Economic Forum in Davos, Xi Jinping implored world leaders to abandon confrontation and work together.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said Xi’s rhetoric did not match reality after Beijing launched trade strikes on up to $20 billion in Australian exports last year due to disputes over coronavirus, national security and human rights.

The Australian government has taken little encouragement from Xi’s appeal to “end the misguided approach of antagonism and confrontation,” Frydenberg said Australia would not compromise on the national interest and those were “non-negotiable issues for us”.

Without the Democrats, Has Hong Kong's Legislature Become a #RubberStamp?

The Panel on Judicial and Legal Services of Legislative Council met on January 27, 2021 to discuss the proposed amendments to supplementary arrangements for arbitration between China and Hong Kong.

Among 13 members, none but only the Panel Chairman, Horace Cheung Kwok-kwan, attended the meeting.

After the Department of Justice explained the document, Cheung raised only one question which ended the whole “deliberation” in about 10 minutes.

In December 2020, 15 pro-democracy legislators resigned en masse to protest against Beijing's disqualifications of elected lawmakers in the extended term. After that, only #BeijingLoyalists were left in the Panel on Judicial and Legal Services, including Vice-Chairman Martin Liao Cheung-kong, Chairlady of the New People’s Party Regina Ip, Junius Ho Kwan-yiu and Holden Chow Ho-ding.

However, none of them attended the meeting.

From "the Leaning Liberty" to "the Almost Truth"
District Councilor Kisslan Chan Puts Up
#StreetArt Yet Again

The "Leaning characters" slogans have once again appeared on streets in Yuen Long, Hong Kong.

The street art is set up and created by district councilor Kisslan Chan Ling-lun, who used "the Almost Truth" as a theme for his new work. The art is also created from several wooden planks, with the planks arranged to show the Chinese characters for "truth" (真相) when looked at with head tilted.

Chan revealed to Stand News that this served as a continuation of his previous work "The Leaning Liberty", which like "The Almost Truth", is arranged to show the Chinese characters for "liberty" (自由) when looked at from the sides. He stated that he had at first thought that the 木 radical in 相 didn't look artistic, and had removed a dot in a flash of inspiration, stating that "there's still some distance until we reach the truth". He hoped that one day he could "add that dot in" when the truth is reached.

Chan also expressed that the recent political incidents and court cases had showed that "it's hard to reach 100% truth", and that his work expresses the values many believe in in this environment, believing that "citizens would resonate with the words".

Chan studied art in University, and hoped that art would make the public notice what is happening around them more, and revealed the release of several similar works in the near future.

Beijing Mouthpiece Defames a 11-year-old Hong Kong Boy and Uses Fake Identity to Approach his Family

In Hong Kong, 11-year-old #JoelWong, the founder of the Tin Shui Wai Community Concern Group, was assaulted by a pro-Beijing elderly man on January 25, 2021.

Wong saw a group of elderly women and men gathering and dancing in a park in Tin Shui Wai. When he approached the group, reminding them to keep the music down, he was headbutted by one of the men who also punched Wong on his tummy.

Since Wong reported the case to the Hong Kong Police, Wong has been harassed by Ta Kung Pao, a Beijing-owned newspaper. On January 26, 2021, the CCP mouthpiece even published a so-called "interview" with Wong’s Grandmother on its frontpage, defaming the community-caring Wong as "going astray".

The Concern Group told Stand News that the reporter of Ta Kung Pao, who "interviewed" Wong's grandmother first claimed to be his teacher and social worker. When Wong's grandmother let the reporter into their apartment, he took picture of their household and other family members. It was only after that he then revealed his identity as a reporter.

The Concern Group denounced the reporter’s action, calling it “shameful” to chat with Wong's family and “betray their trust.”

Biden Says that Huawei is a “Distrustful Supplier” and Equipment Poses a National Security Threat

The spokesperson of the White House, Jen Psaki, indicated on Wednesday (27th January) that the Biden government would prevent the US telecommunications network from using equipment from “distrust-worthy suppliers”, such as the Chinese telecommunications equipment giant Huawei.

Psaki stated the telecommunication equipment of a “distrust-worthy supplier” will be a national security threat to the US and other allies. The US will make sure that the telecommunication network is not using equipment from those suppliers, and they will work with the allies to secure their cybersecurity. “Invest in the expansion of telecommunications equipment production by the credible US and allied companies”.

Former Trump government allegations that Huawei can monitor users, steal intellectual property rights, and violate sanctions. Huawei denies wrongdoings. Apart from putting Huawei on the trade blacklist, Trump also took the lead on lobbying allies to reject Huawei equipment when building a 5G network. Before the end of the Trump administration, the government still noticed many suppliers of Huawei, including chip manufacturer Intel, will revoke their supply license to Huawei.

According to South China Morning Post (#SCMP) on #Jan27 2022, China allows the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, to visit Xinjiang after the Winter Olympics; however, China does not allow Bachelet to investigate on human rights violation issues, causing United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (#UNHCR) to postpone their Xinjiang report publication date to after the Olympic Games.

China's Foreign Affairs Minister, #ZhaoLijian, claimed that China's stand is "consistent and clear": "The invitation aims to enhance the interactions and collaborations between the 2 parties. We oppose anyone to take advantage of political manipulation."

Human Rights Watch told #Reuter on #Jan28 that the Chinese government tries to distract the world with the winter Olympics from their inhumane crimes on #Uyghurs and other #Turkistan. They also reminded everyone, especially foreign affairs ministers, not to be fooled.
