During the May 27 protest in Mong Kok, plenty were arrested, however, most were released the next morning.

China convicts Uighurs in sham trials at Xinjiang camps

//Detainees were forced to endure countless hours of indoctrination and language classes, perched on small stools.

//In some facilities, they had to watch TV propaganda broadcasts praising President Xi Jinping for hours on end.The slightest infraction, such as a whispered conversation, was met with swift and harsh punishment.

//After picking a crime from the list came a sham trial, in which the detainees had no legal representation and were convicted without evidence or due process of any kind.

//they were handed a piece of paper detailing more than 70 acts and forced to choose one or several of them. Most of them were religious acts, such as praying or wearing a headscarf.

//the Chinese government has released those with Kazakh residency permits, passports and family members living in Kazakhstan, which is home to a sizable Uighur community.

//For those without outside links and citizenship, however, it is virtually impossible to escape China's vast network of repression and constant surveillance.

//"They threatened us: 'if you don't pick anything, that means you did not confess your crime. If you don't confess, you will stay here forever.' That's why we picked one crime,"

//one man managed to refuse, a rare show of individual bravery in a camp surrounded by high walls and watchtowers and guarded by armed officials.Over the course of three days, officials — some high-ranking — berated him endlessly, trying to force him to sign a confession... he was released into months of strictly monitored house arrest. At the time, he says, he was the only one who was freed, while all the other detainees remained in the camp.

//most acts deemed illegal were of a religious nature is a further indication that the Chinese authorities are targeting the religion and cultural practices of its Muslim minorities in an attempt to eradicate them

//Since 2016, the Chinese government has been arresting ethnic Uighurs and Kazakhs and imprisoning them in what... have been referred to in the West as "re-education" camps.

//According to estimates, at least 1 million of the roughly 10 million Uighurs and Kazakhs living in Xinjiang have disappeared into the vast network of prisons and camps.

//There are legitimate reasons for Chinese authorities to be concerned about Uighur extremism... decades of cultural and political discrimination... state-sponsored migration of the majority ethnic Han Chinese to Xinjiang, widespread discontent has... turned violent.

//in the majority of cases, China is imprisoning Uighurs based on their religious practices and culture, rather than extremist behavior.

//there are three categories of re-education camps: Those with minimum security, which seem to have been built with the goal of reintegrating detainees back into society and have a strong vocational training element. Secondly, there are medium-security facilities, where detainees spend three to five years but are eventually released. Finally, Ruser says, there are the maximum-security facilities, where detainees are locked up indefinitely, "with no intention of ever letting them back into society again" — an extrajudicial form of detention

//imams and those deemed religious are more likely to be sent to prison, sometimes for decades, most likely as they are considered "irreformable."

//Others were sent to labor camps, like one detainee who told DW she was forced to work in a glove factory.

//Their experience has left deep emotional and physical scars. All of the former inmates DW spoke to suffered from obvious post-traumatic stress disorder, including memory loss and insomnia. During the interviews, they alternated between rage and tears, as they recalled their ordeals, which included interrogations and sexual abuse.

Secret footage shows Uighur man’s detention inside Chinese prison

//Rare footage and text messages secretly sent by a detained Uighur man show chilling evidence of human rights violations by China, as global scrutiny of the situation in Xinjiang grows.

//According to reports by the BBC and the Globe and Mail, Merdan Ghappar, a successful model on the e-commerce platform Taobao, was detained after having spent over a year in prison on a drugs charge his supporters said was trumped up.

//Videos and text messages reportedly sent by Ghappar provide a detailed account of his detention and the shocking conditions he says he witnessed, including teenage boys being hooded and beaten, and of the widespread use of “four-piece suits” – combined restraints that are criticised by human rights groups.

//Other text messages revealed how children as young as 13 are targeted as part of China’s efforts to suppress the Muslim minority group’s religion and culture, with a document calling on children to “repent and surrender”.

//In his texts, Ghappar described being made to wear the “four-piece suit”, being threatened, and held in unsanitary, and dangerous conditions, with prisoners besieged by lice and sharing unwashed eating utensils to consume “the leftovers after the cops had eaten, made into rice soup”.

//The BBC said his messages continued for a few days before ceasing about five months ago, and that authorities had provided no formal information about his location or the reason for his detention.

//International focus on Xinjiang has increased in recent months, including widespread calls for independent investigators to be allowed in. The US has imposed sanctions over China’s treatment of the Uighur and other Turkic Muslim minorities, while other countries are debating similar measures.

//Abuse and mistreatment of the Uighurs and other Muslim minorities in Xinjiang has been extensively documented but strenuously denied by Beijing, which claims its policies are to counter terrorism.

Daughter-in-law of Former CCP's Senior Leader Asks Xi Jiping to Let her Return to the United States

On Christmas eve of 2020, an open letter was sent on Twitter to the Communist Chinese Party (#CCP) leader Xi Jiping, hoping that "the top leader of the country" could "help" the owner of the account and her daughter to leave China, so that she can reunite with her parents in the United States.

The account owner claimed to be the daughter-in-law of Zhou Yonghong, former state councillor and Party Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party who has been in jail for 5 years under accusations of bribery, abuse of power and intentionally disclosing state secrets.

Huang Wan, daughter-in-law of Zhou, said that in December 2013, her whole family was taken away. They then lived at home under surveillance for 10.5 months, and were held in the detention center for more than one year. She was “tortured and abused” by the Public Security system in Hubei, China. She was then sentenced to probation order and spent 3 years under the monitor of the judicial office until June 2019.

After that, she was restricted to leave the country by the Beijing Chaoyang People's Court due to a “civil complaint that has nothing to do with me [her]”. 18 months has already passed, and the case still has not been trialed. Huang suspected that the intention is to keep her in China.

Huang described that the past seven years “felt like hell”. Recently, she was ordered by the Chinese court to evict from her home in ten days.

Despite her US citizenship, she still could not go back to the US because of the Chinesecourt’s travel restriction. She said she felt totally helpless in China.

China Jails Citizen Journalist Zhang Zhan
EU said She was Being Tortured, and Pompeo said the Case Reflects CCP Fears of Truthtellers

Chinese citizen journalist Zhang Zhan traveled to Wuhan to make the news coverage regarding the Wuhan Virus pandemic. She was accused of picking quarrels and provoking trouble, putting her in prison for four years. The European Union (EU) said in a statement yesterday calling for an immediate release of Zhang and cited from credible sources that she had been tortured during detention. The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also issued a statement condemning China strongly for its false prosecution and conviction of Zhang, which reflected the CCP's fears of citizens who speak the truth.

The EU called for the immediate release of Zhang in a statement yesterday (29th). They also disclosed according to reliable sources, Zhang had been subjected to torture and ill-treatment during her detention, resulting in the severe deterioration of her health condition. They added that Zhang must receive adequate medical assistance. "The increasing restrictions on freedom of speech, access to information, intimidation and surveillance of journalists, as well as detentions, trials, and sentencing of human rights defenders, lawyers, and intellectuals in China will continue to be a major concern."

Missing Hong Kong Pro-democracy Activist Reportedly Detained in HK Psychiatric Centre

Pro-democracy activist Andy Li, whose whereabouts was not confirmed by the Hong Kong authorities, was reportedly detained in Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre. According to Apple Daily, Li was guarded under high security by a special unit in the Department of Correctional Service, and is currently detained in isolation.

Li was one of the 12 pro-democracy Hongkongers who were arrested and jailed in China after attempting to flee the city in August last year.

On March 22, 2021, Li and 8 others who had completed their jail sentence in China were sent back to the Hong Kong into police custody for further interrogation and detention.

However, Li was the only one who insofar has no contact with his family and lawyer ever since his assumed arrival in Hong Kong. His family has made inquiries to the Hong Kong Police Force and the Department of Correctional Service earlier; but no government department had information on his whereabouts.

The sister of Li told Stand News that barrister Lawrence Law Tat-Hung, who was representing Li in court, was not the lawyer appointed by the family. She further said that she had no knowledge of such a person until she heard it from the news.

Stand News reporters called Lawrence Law Tat-Hung on the morning of March 31, 2021, to inquire whether he had been appointed by Li.

The barrister replied by saying “Excuse me, but I’m not at liberty to say too much”. The reporter also mentioned that Li’s sister did not know him, Law then immediately hung up the phone.

Andy Li was charged with "conspiracy to commit collusion with a foreign country", "conspiracy to assist criminals" and "unlicensed possession of ammunition". The case was heard on the morning of March 31 in the West Kowloon Magistrates' Court.

3-Year #Backlog of Court Cases Mean Hong Kong Protesters may be "Jailed for Nothing", Says Concerned Barrister

Hong Kong's courts are experiencing a large backlog of protest-related cases, with some trials scheduled as late as 2024.

The riot case against pro-democracy protesters entering into the Legislative Council (#LegCo) chambers on July 1, 2019, which had its first hearing last week, is scheduled for trial in May 2023, more than 2 years later.

An anonymous barrister pointed out that the jail terms handed out for recent riot cases are 4 to 5 years, though the sentences are often reduced to around 3 years for good behavior in prison.

Time spent in custody while awaiting trial also counts toward time served, therefore some of the accused may have already served their sentences by the time the court has found them guilty. If they are found innocent, however, then "they would have been jailed for nothing these three years. We're talking three years, not a couple of months."

The situation is effectively handing down a punishment before the trial, the barrister said, and is unfair to the accused.

Though some arrestees in riot cases are released on bail, the terms include night-time curfews and prohibitions from being in certain locations, or from leaving the city.

The barrister calls the bail conditions harsh and disruptive to the lives of the accused, "as if it's meant for punishing them first." Bail conditions in other criminal cases are not nearly as numerous or complicated, he says, "I don't quite understand why riot cases nowadays need so many bail conditions."

#47Democrats under Trial and Jeer Disorganized Prosecution

In Hong Kong on November 29, 2021, the case of the 47 democrats, who were charged by the #NationalSecurityLaw for participating in a primary election in 2020, was trialed in court.

Although the trial was scheduled at 2 pm, the authorities did not bring the defendants currently detained to the court on time. Their families and friends, as well as the citizens attending the trial became agitated after more than an hour of waiting.

"Can the judiciary explain the cause of the one hour delay?" citizens in the court complained, "They [the authorities] do not have respect for the attendees at all!"

The court secretary claimed that there was a problem with the communication system.

In the extended court, the speaker was not turned on until 2:46 pm. After that, the court kept repeating the court regulations.

The defendants were sent to the court after the magistrate #LawTakChuenPeter arrived at the courtroom at 3:30pm.

When entering the court room, some defendants raised their hands to thank the citizens who sent a round of encouraging words.

An hour later, the trial did not have much progress. The chief prosecutor #LawTinWah suggested to split the defendants for separate trial. He proposed one of the groups to be on trial again on Feb 8, 2022. At this time, a male voice was heard saying, "get lost", followed by a round of laughter.

The magistrate did not accept the chief prosecutor's suggestion.

One of the barristers representing the defence sternly criticised the prosecution for procrastination, causing the lack of time for lawyers to give legal advice to the defendants. The comment was received with a round of applause. Nevertheless, the prosecution denied.

At around 5pm, another barrister in the defence reiterated that the legal team "eagerly" wished to receive the required documents from the prosecution in the past 8 months, but it did not happen. Another round of applause followed.

Finally, the magistrate called an end to the day's trial after 7 pm. Citizens in court encouraged the defendants and each other, "Keep it up, Hongkongers!" Some sent Birthday wishes to the detained pro-democracy figures.

Defendants Apply to Lift Restrictions on Reporting Court Proceedings

Towards the end of the court hearing for the #47Democrats on Nov 29, one defending lawyer attempted to seek clarification from Magistrate #LawTakChunPeter over three legal stand points, including asking the court to lift the reporting restrictions set out in the Magistrates Ordinance.

Section 87A of the Magistrates Ordinance prohibits reporting the majority of details of committal proceedings, but defendants have the right to request that the restrictions be removed. Accordingly, several defendants' lawyers asked the court to remove the limitations.

Magistrate Law, in fact, sought assistance from one of the defending lawyers to coordinate the matter. The courtroom broke into laughter as the judge struggled with the overwhelming workload of a case with 47 defendants.

The magistrate decided to adjourn hearing the substantive arguments on the application to January 17, 2022 at 9:30am.

He ordered some defendants to return to the court on February 8, while another court appearance is scheduled for March 4.
