Beijing blasts Bob Rae after ambassador calls for UN to investigate genocide claims

Rae has asked the UN Human Rights Council to investigate China's treatment of the country's Uighurs in Xinjiang. Beijing has denied any wrongdoing, saying it is running a voluntary employment and language-training program.

Zhao on Monday used a number of select statistics that suggest China's Uighur population is growing at a faster rate than Canada's population to mock Rae's suggestions that the Uighurs are being persecuted.

However, Zhao's statistics appear to have been incomplete or inaccurate and did not address a report by The Associated Press in June that birthrates have been dramatically cut in Uighur-dominated areas of Xinjiang.

French Footballer Griezmann cuts ties with
#Huawei citing fears over treatment of #Uighurs

//The France and Barcelona forward Antoine Griezmann ended his affiliation with Huawei on Dec 10, 202p, saying there are ā€œstrong suspicionsā€ that the Chinese tech giant has contributed to the repression of the mostly Muslim minority Uighurs.

Griezmannā€™s announcement followed media reports that Huawei has tested facial recognition software intended to help Chinaā€™s surveillance of the group.

ā€œFollowing strong suspicions that the Huawei company has contributed to the development of a ā€˜Uighur alertā€™ thanks to facial recognition software, I am announcing the immediate termination of my partnership with the company,ā€ Griezmann said in an Instagram post.

ā€œI take this opportunity to invite Huawei to not just deny these accusations, but to take concrete actions as quickly as possible to condemn this mass repression, and to use its influence to contribute to the respect of human and womenā€™s rights in society.ā€//

The US Bans Cotton Imports from Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps for Involvements of Uyghur Forced Labour

The US put pressure on China for its human rights issues in Xinjiang again on Wednesday (Dec 3) local time. The US was to ban the import of cotton products from the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (XPCC) and has accused the corps for subjecting imprisoned Uyghurs to forced labour.

The US Customs and Border Protection announced the new arrangements for the withhold release order to ban cotton and cotton products from XPCC. Reuters reported that the Trump administration was seeking to consolidate its harsh stance against China in the final few weeks of Trumpā€™s presidential term, to make it harder for President-elect Biden to resolve the tense relationship between the two nations.

The withhold release order allows the authority to confiscate products allegedly produced by forced labour, in order to tackle human rights abuses. The US considered a total ban on cotton and tomato products imported from Xinjiang, but the ban was opposed by US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue, and the Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin, and was hence changed to a ban on imports from designated enterprises.

Three Canadian companies investing in Xinjiang operations, Trudeau concerned about companies violating human rights

In an effort to stop China from committing human rights abuses against the Uighurs in Xinjiang, the Canadian government announced last week that it is asking major domestic companies to avoid doing business with or profiting from forced labour. Recently, Canadian media reported that three publicly traded Canadian companies had invested hundreds of millions of Canadian dollars in Xinjiang, making them the top five foreign investors in the region. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed concern about the incident and said he is in close contact with all Canadian companies to ensure they do not benefit from human rights abuses.

The Globe and Mail (Canada) reported Monday that three Canadian companies, including renewable energy giant Canadian Solar Inc. and two small mining companies, Dynasty Gold Corp. and GobiMin Inc. have operated businesses and invested hundreds of millions of dollars in Xinjiang over the past two decades. However, none of the three companies has responded to whether they are involved in human rights abuses or forced labour activities.

An Espionage War: Afghanistan detains 10 Chinese spies suspected of plotting assassination against Uighur leader, urges China to apologise

The Afghan intelligence department announced the recent bust of a Chinese spy team with 10 Chinese nationals arrested. At least two of them have ties with the Taliban branch "Haqqani", with weapons, ammunition, explosives and Ketamine seized from the mastermind's apartment. The Afghan government said the Chinese spies are suspected of committing espionage crimes, allegedly collecting Uighur intelligence in Afghanistan and cooperating with Pakistani spy agencies to engage in terrorist activities, and demanded an apology from the Chinese authorities.

Disguised as an East Turkistan branch to lure Uighurs into traps

The arrested Chinese spy team leader, Li YangYang, who had been working for Chinese intelligence since around July-August, primarily sought information on Al Qaeda and investigated possible Uighur activity in Afghanistan's eastern provinces. He was arrested in his apartment near Kabul on Dec. 10. Another person arrested was reportedly a woman named Sha Hung, the owner of a restaurant in Kabul, in whose residence investigators found explosives.

Sources said that Sha Hung and Li Yangyang were both associated with Haqqani. They joined other Chinese spies to disguise themselves as an offshoot of the East Turkestan Islamic Movement to recruit Uighurs opposed to the Chinese government, as an attempt to "eliminate" Uighur leaders hiding in Afghanistan with the help of terrorists. Some of the Uighurs who fled China would go to Afghanistan, and the Chinese government would also immediately detain any Uighurs entering China from Afghanistan. Sources said that Beijing had previously held secret meetings with the Taliban about the Uighurs.

China sanctioned by #EU, #US, #Britain and #Canada over Human Right Violations in #Xinjiang

//The EU, US, Britain and Canada on March 22, 2021 imposed sanctions against Chinese officials including Zhu Hailan, Wang Jungzheng, Wang Mingshan and Chen Mingguo over the alleged crackdown on the #Uighurs.

The coordinated strike also targeted the state-run Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps.

The Chinese government has been accused of carrying out forced sterilisations on Uighur women and separating children from their families.

A BBC investigation published in February contained first-hand testimony of systematic rape, sexual abuse and torture of detainees.

#US Human Rights Group Urges US State Secretary to Pressure China on HK Issue

On March 18, 2021, the US Secretary of State #AntonyBlinken met with Chinese Politburo Member Yang Jiechi and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the first high-level meeting since President #Biden took office in January 2021.

A day before the high-level meeting, Francis Hui Wing-ting, founder of We The Hongkongers, a group of Hongkongers in the US, spoke to the media outside the White House alongside Tibetans and Uighurs.

Hui urged US representatives to put pressure on China's Human Rights issues in the meeting.

Hui talked about recent political oppressions in Hong Kong in the press conference, ā€œall my friends in Hong Kong are either in prison or in exile.ā€ She mentioned that the press conference would become evidence of her collusion with foreign powers under the National Security Law in Hong Kong.

Hui pointed out that the US decision to further sanction 24 Chinese and Hong Kong officials in the wake of the high-level meeting shows the US stance on Chinese affairs. She hoped Blinken to put further pressure on Chinese officials and to bring issues of Hong Kong, East Turkistan, Tibet and Taiwan onto the table in the meeting.

'Our souls are dead': how I survived a Chinese 're-education' camp for Uighurs

The man on the phone said he worked for the oil company, ā€œIn accounting, actuallyā€. His voice was unfamiliar to me. At first, I couldnā€™t make sense of what he was calling about. It was November 2016, and I had been on unpaid leave from the company since I left China and moved to France 10 years earlier. There was static on the line; I had a hard time hearing him.

ā€œYou must come back to Karamay to sign documents concerning your forthcoming retirement, Madame Haitiwaji,ā€ he said. Karamay was the city in the western Chinese province of Xinjiang where Iā€™d worked for the oil company for more than 20 years.

The Government has admitted for the first time that Uighurs are being targeted by China on British soil ā€œin an effort to intimidate them into silenceā€.

The problem is now so serious that it risks becoming a diplomatic incident after ministers complained directly to the Chinese embassy in London.
