China’s growing naval activity in Japanese waters is a big concern, Japan lawmakers says

After Japanese media reported that Japan, France and the United States will hold joint military drills for the first time next May, state minister of defense Yasuhide Nakayama said, “Tokyo feels threatened by China’s activity in the waters surrounding Japan.”

An opinion piece in Chinese state-backed tabloid Global times said the planned military exercises show that Tokyo wants to rely on its allies to support its “illegal maritime claims:.

Nakayama said Beijing is “unilaterally” changing the status quo in the East China sea. The Chinese ships and the coast guard vessels try to get into Japan’s territorial water every single day. Also, he continued that Tokyo is concerned about Beijing’s cooperation with Moscow.

New Australia Law Can Scrap China Belt and Road Accords

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has new powers to veto or scrap agreements that state governments reach with foreign powers under laws that could stymie China’s Belt and Road Initiative in Australia and further inflame tension between the trading partners.

New Australia law passed by Parliament on 8 Dec (Tuesday) will give the foreign minister the ability to stop new and previously signed agreements between overseas governments between overseas governments and Australia’s states and territories, and with bodies such as local authorities and universities.

The states and territories have at least 130 agreements across 30 nations that could be affected by the new law, according to Morrison.

It’s the latest move by the government to safeguard national interests. Morrison also plans to toughen foreign investment screening.

China Suspends Beef Import from the Sixth Australian Supplier as Trade Disputes Escalates

As the Australia-China Trade War gets worsened, China announced more Australian beef import suspension, without providing any reason for the import ban.

China has successively banned five Australian beef suppliers this year. One of which was accused of using Chloramphenicol, a prohibited antibiotic banned in Australia and China, the other four were accused of violating quarantine requirements.

China Customs stopped application and registration for beef exports from Meramist, the sixth Australian beef supplier, from 7 December without any explanation. Meramist General Manager Mike Eathorne said in an interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) yesterday, "I was advised five minutes ago and I have been given absolutely no reasons."

Goldman Sachs to acquire 100% of China Securities Joint Venture

Goldman Sachs is the first global bank to seek full ownership of its securities business in China, deepening its investment in the world’s second-largest economy after partnering with a domestic brokerage for 17 years.

Citigroup Inc. has been awarded a custodian license that allows it to service mutual and private fund domiciled in China.

Goldman didn’t say how much it plans to pay for the remaining shares in the China venture. As regulatory approvals can take some time to secure, the transaction would likely be completed in 2021.

UK House of Common Raises Concerns on the Severe Downturn in Hong Kong’s Situation. Minister of State for Asia Refuses to Comment on the Freezing of Former HK Legislative Councillor Ted Hui’s HSBC Bank Accounts

The House of Common of the British Parliament hosted an urgent inquiry on the imprisonment of Demosisto’s Secretary-General Joshua Wong, Chairperson Ivan Lam, and party member Agnes Chow on 7th December. Responding on behalf of the UK government, Minister of State for Asia Nigel Adams expressed his concerns on the issue of Hong Kong and the series of cases targeting pro-democratic activists, including the arrest of the three youngsters mentioned above and the media mogul Jimmy Lai from Next Media.

Adams had already expressed his concerns for the aforementioned cases to the Hong Kong government as well as to Beijing senior officials, asking them to adhere to their international obligation. At the time of the inquiry, there were judges from UK’s Supreme Court amongst the group of overseas judges at Hong Kong’s Court of Final Appeal. Adams reiterated that UK judges had always played an important role in supporting judicial independence in Hong Kong, and that this independence was key in the success of Hong Kong. As a result, the UK government had wished to carry on in this aspect. However, the implementation of the Hong Kong National Security Law in July had brought up real problems and contradicted with China’s promise to protect Hong Kong’s fundamental rights and freedom under the Sino-British Joint Declaration. UK’s Supreme Court had been in constant communication with the UK government, examining the situation in Hong Kong and the stand from UK judges.

Parliament members questioned Adams why the UK government was not doing more when the situation in Hong Kong was becoming increasingly severe. They used the freezing of the bank accounts of former Hong Kong LegCo member Ted Hui as an example, suggesting that the UK government could perform countermeasures and sanction Beijing’s banks in return. In his response, Adams reiterated the government’s original stand, stating that he would not comment on individual cases and believed the business community would have their own judgement on Hong Kong’s situation under the newly imposed National Security Law.

Dissatisfied with the response from Adams, former Conservative Party Leader Iain Duncan Smith described the freezing of the bank accounts of Ted Hui and his family as an “outrage”, and that the UK government should stop these actions at once. However, Adams still did not respond directly but reiterated instead that China had made historical promises and would like to see China adhere to those promises.

Chinese ‘spy’ aided Congressional Democrats, slept with politicians to gain influence, anonymous US officials claim

A Chinese student slept with two Midwest mayors and cultivated California Democrats while allegedly spying for Beijing, an Axios report said, even as a Beijing professor boasted on video about having ‘people at the top’ in the US.

Between 2011 when she came to the US as a student and her abrupt and unexplained departure in mid-2015, Christine Fang worked her way into the confidences of a number of prominent Democrats in the San Francisco Bay Area, Axios reported on Monday. Fang appeared in photos alongside Judy Chu, Mike Honda, Ro Khanna, and Eric Swalwell – an Intelligence Committee member who rose to prominence by championing the ‘Russiagate’ conspiracy theory against President Donald Trump.

Images from over 700 surveillance cameras in Taiwan leaked, all using Huawei chips

The Taiwanese media has reported that over 700 private surveillance cameras have been leaked live on websites such as Insecam. The leaked footage included postnatal care homes, clinics, some homes' entrances, living rooms and even bedrooms, all of which had one thing in common: the cameras used Huawei chips.

A bun shop owner in the Datong district of Taipei City said that she was scared to see the images of her shop on the internet. She never thought that these images would be made public, and the thought of being watched at work made her feel uncomfortable. The surveillance cameras used in these leaked locations all have Huawei chips built into them, most of which are HiSilicon Hi3516 chips.
