World Politicians, Human Rights Groups Reportedly Ask Olympic Committee to Remove Beijing as 2022 Winter Olympics Host
The Sydney Morning Herald has reported that the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC)―a group of parliamentarians from the UK, US, Australia, Canada, and Europe―had formally asked the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to reconsider whether China should get to host the 2022 Winter Olympics. China’s foreign ministry has yet to respond.
Sir Iain Duncan Smith, member of the British parliament and co-chairman of the IPAC, said, “The free world does have a strong position to say the bullying, the threatening, the internal repression, the border disputes, the arrogant attitude to your neighbours, the breaking of the treaty with Hong Kong―these must have consequences. The coalition of 180 human rights organisations, includes the World Uyghur Congress and the International Tibet Network. In an open letter, they said that since Beijing was awarded the Games in 2015, " "the situation has deteriorated drastically as President Xi Jinping has unleashed an unrelenting crackdown on basic freedom and human rights". They also accused the IOC of refusing to take action on Beijing's human rights situation and called on leaders to boycott the Beijing Winter Games and not encourage China's reckless exploitation of human rights and dissidents' suppression.

On Chinese New Year’s eve (Jan 31), a series of transatlantic illuminations aiming to draw international attention on China's #authoritarian rule over Hong Kong were seen on the walls of Tower Bridge in London and Chinese Embassy in Washington DC.
Bright white lights reading "Free Jimmy Lai and the Apple 7" of three storey tall were projected onto the walls.
In addition, the illuminations also showed the "Olympics rings in thorns", a portrait of Jimmy Lai and a yellow umbrella, the symbol of the 2014 Umbrella Movement in Hong Kong.
The US-based designer, Robin Bell said his intention was to grab people's attention on Human Rights around the world.
Mark L. Clifford, president of the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong, shared photographs of the illuminations on his Twitter page, calling the upcoming #WinterOlympics in #Beijing " the most shameful Olympics since the 1936 Nazi Olympics in Berlin”.
