China Jails Citizen Journalist Zhang Zhan
EU said She was Being Tortured, and Pompeo said the Case Reflects CCP Fears of Truthtellers

Chinese citizen journalist Zhang Zhan traveled to Wuhan to make the news coverage regarding the Wuhan Virus pandemic. She was accused of picking quarrels and provoking trouble, putting her in prison for four years. The European Union (EU) said in a statement yesterday calling for an immediate release of Zhang and cited from credible sources that she had been tortured during detention. The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also issued a statement condemning China strongly for its false prosecution and conviction of Zhang, which reflected the CCP's fears of citizens who speak the truth.

The EU called for the immediate release of Zhang in a statement yesterday (29th). They also disclosed according to reliable sources, Zhang had been subjected to torture and ill-treatment during her detention, resulting in the severe deterioration of her health condition. They added that Zhang must receive adequate medical assistance. "The increasing restrictions on freedom of speech, access to information, intimidation and surveillance of journalists, as well as detentions, trials, and sentencing of human rights defenders, lawyers, and intellectuals in China will continue to be a major concern."

Citizen Journalist Zhang Zhan Seen Looking Haggard After Hunger Strike in Chinese Prison

The photos of citizen Journalist Zhang Zhan's appearance in court have been released. Zhang is said to have been undergoing a hunger strike for six months, and is seen looking haggard and in a wheelchair when appearing before the court accompanied by two court police in China.

Wang Jianhong, a supporter of the #FreeZhangZhan movement, posted the photos on Twitter, which were taken back in 28 December 2020 when Zhang stood trial at Shanghai Pudong People's Court.

The tweet mentioned Zhang was bound and forced to face the court, stating that, "the wheelchair she was in had a wide belt binding her to the back of her wheelchair preventing movement. She was wearing handcuffs." The tweet also mentioned that Zhang's mother stated to the media that Zhang looked "haggard and thin to the bone" when looked from behind.

Zhang Zhan, who conducted a hunger strike and once rebuked a judge with "This is where we judge you for your sins, not mine", was convicted of "picking quarrels and provoking trouble" after posting videos on quarantine measures and the medical situation in Wuhan, and sentenced to four years in prison.

Zhang's lawyer had reported seeing Zhang with a NG tube, while being bound around the wrists and waist.

#ReportersWithoutBorders and 44-NGO coalition urge Chinese President #XiJinping to release #Covid19 reporter on #hungerstrike

//On September 17, 2021, Reporters Without Borders (#RSF) and a coalition of 44 human rights NGOs urged Chinese President Xi Jinping to exonerate and release Covid-19 reporter #ZhangZhan, who has been on hunger strike since May 2020, for which she was forced-fed.

“Zhang Zhan did not commit any crime but instead courageously risked her life to inform the public on the health crisis. She should never have been arrested, let alone subjected to a harsh prison sentence”, says the head of RSF East Asia bureau, Cédric Alviani, who urges President Xi Jinping to “ensure that Zhang Zhan is released before it’s too late.”//

CCP State Media Justifies Propaganda on #JournalistsDay as Crackdown on Citizen Journalists Continue

Journalists in China are either part of state-owned propaganda or being imprisoned for criticising the government.

November 8 marks the Journalists’ Day in China. Most state-funded media published articles praising the work done by media workers.

In the party funded People’s Daily, several journalists were interviewed to talk about their work on the ground. Among them, one described their work as a "tribute to the [Chinese Communist] Party's centennial anniversary."

Hu Xijin, the editor-in-chief of the state-funded tabloid Global Times, tweeted that "journalists are part of state-owned propaganda."

Never mentioned on these official media were those independent journalists and citizen journalists who have been imprisoned, detained, or arrested for pursueing truths under the Chinese Communist Party’s (#CCP) rule.

Zhang Zhan, a Chinese citizen journalist and former lawyer, was sentenced in December 2020 to four years in jail for her reporting on CCP’s mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

It has been confirmed that Huang Xueqin, a women's rights activist, and independent journalist, was being arrested.

Citizen Journalist Zhang Zhan Jailed over Covid-19 Report, Weighing Less Than 40kg on Hunger Strike
Her Family: She may not live long

China citizen journalist Zhang Zhan was sentenced to four years in prison for "picking quarrels and provoking trouble" after exposing the epidemic in Wuhan last year. She has been on a hunger strike in prison, and her health is deteriorating.

Her brother, Zhang Ju, recently posted on Twitter that his sister appears to be terminally ill and is worried that she will not be able to survive the winter. The British Embassy in China urges the Chinese authorities to release Zhang Zhan and other detained journalists immediately.

In a series of posts on Twitter on Saturday and Sunday, Zhang Ju revealed his sister Zhang Zhan's latest condition and posted her old photos. "I don't think she can live much longer," he said, adding that Zhang is 177cm tall but weighs less than 40kg now, "if she doesn't make it through the coming cold winter, I hope the world will remember her".

Editor note: "picking quarrels and provoking trouble" is a charge routinely used to suppress dissent, levelling against citizen journalists, human rights lawyers and activists.
