Hundreds of People Protested Against the Push for Chinese Vaccination in Brazil São Paulo

More than 300 people demonstrated in the central business district of São Paolo, the biggest city in Brazil, on Sunday local times (Nov 1), opposing the measures suggested by the state governor João Doria on the universal COVID-19 vaccination, as well as opposing the authorities on the use of vaccines from a Chinese company Sinovac Biotech.

Protest participants expressed support for President Jair Bolsonaro, who opposed the use of Chinese vaccines. Some even viewed João Doria as China’s ambassador, forcing them to take the Chinese vaccines.

Doria earlier stated that as long as the vaccines were available and sufficient, he planned to force the citizens of São Paolo to vaccinate. However, President Bolsonaro indicated earlier that vaccination was only voluntary. Reports stated that the local Supreme Court would make a verdict on the issue later.

Financial Times Report: Huawei Will Build Chip Factory in Shanghai and Forgo US Technology

The British Financial Times quoted a source in saying that Chinese telecommunications equipment company Huawei has planned to establish a chip manufacturing factory in Shanghai and no longer use the US technologies, in order to solve chips supply caused by the US’s export restrictions.

The report stated that the factory would be operated by Huawei’s collaborator Shanghai IC R&D Center, to ensure sufficient chips supply for core telecommunications equipment business. They expect to commence their production by the end of next year.

The factory would first produce the low-end 45-nanometre chips, and until the second half of 2021, when it would have the ability to manufacture the more advanced 28-nanometre chips for smart TVs and other internet equipment. By 2022, it would be able to produce the 20-nanometre chips for 5G network telecommunication equipment. In addition to the previous one to two years of chips inventory, Shanghai IC R&D Centre believed that the factory could support the sustainable operation of 5G business of Huawei.

PLA Fighter Aircrafts Make 8 Incursions into Taiwan's ADIZ, the 32nd Time Since Mid-September According to Taiwan Ministry of National Defense

PLA aircraft keep entering Taiwan's airspace in recent months, with eight PLA second military aircraft re-entering Taiwan's Southwest Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) today (2 November). It was the third-largest operation since mid-September. Taiwanese Authorities used radio to drive the planes away.

According to Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense, the PLA dispatched eight sorties to Taiwan Southwest ADIZ near the Dongsha Islands (also known as Pratas Islands) in the South China Sea, flying close to the west of the eastern front, on 2 November (today). The operation consisted of five aircraft types including one Y-8 anti-submarine aircraft, one Y-8 tactical reconnaissance aircraft, two Su-30 jets, two J-16 fighters, and two J-10 jets. The Taiwan air force used radio to drive the planes away and used air defence missile systems to track their movement. This operation of PLA is the 32nd times since 16 September and the third-largest.

According to the record of the FB page "SouthwestAirspaceofTW", PLA military aircraft started entering Taiwan's airspace in the early hours of this morning, flying at altitudes of 3,500 to 7,000 meters, with the Y-8 anti-submarine aircraft reaching 3,500 meters at one point. From 5:59 a.m., the Taiwan fighter issued radio warnings to the PLA aircraft for seven times, and ask them to "Turn around and leave immediately". In October, Chinese military aircraft flew into Taiwan's airspace for at least 25 days, five times more than in July, and the Taiwan air force made more than 84 warning broadcasts to banish Chinese military aircraft in October.

The Hunt for Virus Source, WHO let China take charge

The Hunt for Virus Source, WHO let China take charge

As it praised Beijing, the WHO organisation concealed concessions to China and may have sacrificed the best chance to unravel the virus’s origin.

“Understanding that source is a very important,” Dr Michael Ryan, the WHO’s emergency director, said.

Despite Dr Ryan’s pronouncements and over the advices of its emergency committee, the organisation’s leadership had quietly negotiated terms that sidelined its own experts. They would not question China’s initial response or even visit the live-animal market in Wuhan where the outbreak seemed to have originated.

An internal document shows that the health organisation’s virus origin studies will unfold in two phases. Phase 1 is to look for the first patient and investigate what wildlife was sold at the Wuhan market and phase 2 is to find out animal or intrrmidia hosts of virus.

Dr Ryan said, “it is difficult to do this work in a politically intoxicated environment. It’s is hard for scientists to do what they have to do and want to do in a situation like this.”

Citizen Journalist Zhang Zhan Jailed over Covid-19 Report, Weighing Less Than 40kg on Hunger Strike
Her Family: She may not live long

China citizen journalist Zhang Zhan was sentenced to four years in prison for "picking quarrels and provoking trouble" after exposing the epidemic in Wuhan last year. She has been on a hunger strike in prison, and her health is deteriorating.

Her brother, Zhang Ju, recently posted on Twitter that his sister appears to be terminally ill and is worried that she will not be able to survive the winter. The British Embassy in China urges the Chinese authorities to release Zhang Zhan and other detained journalists immediately.

In a series of posts on Twitter on Saturday and Sunday, Zhang Ju revealed his sister Zhang Zhan's latest condition and posted her old photos. "I don't think she can live much longer," he said, adding that Zhang is 177cm tall but weighs less than 40kg now, "if she doesn't make it through the coming cold winter, I hope the world will remember her".

Editor note: "picking quarrels and provoking trouble" is a charge routinely used to suppress dissent, levelling against citizen journalists, human rights lawyers and activists.
