Teacher's Contract Not Renewed For Allowing Students to Perform 'May Glory Be to HK' for Music Examinations

A senior teacher in Hong Kong issued an open letter condemning Heung To Middle School for censorship and unreasonably demanding the teachers to be aligned with the school's political position.

The school refused to renew the teacher's contract, citing the teacher's "failure to stop students from playing 'May Glory Be To Hong Kong' in a music examination" as the cause.

The teacher described the incident as political suppression, and a clear demonstration of white terror.

Hong Kong Police Deny Being “human rights abuser”

Police commander Rupert Dover became known for his iron-fist tactics, after leading the operation against pro-democracy protesters on June 12, 2019 which was believed to have escalated the whole anti-extradition law movement.

Dover told Alibaba-owned South China Morning Post that he was "not certain he was the first to order the use of tear gas". Recently found breaching the property laws, Dover denied being a “human rights abuser” nor doing “Beijing’s dirty work”.

One day before Dover's interview was published, pro-democracy lawmaker Ted Hui launched a civil lawsuit, urging the court to compel the police to reveal the tear gas component.

From June 2019 to May 2020, the Hong Kong police fired at least 16,223 rounds of tear gas, 10,108 rubber bullets, 1,885 sponge grenades, 2,033 beanbag rounds and 19 live bullets at civilians.

#Court Changes the Charge of 12 Pro-democracy Protesters including Actor Gregory Wong
to Rioting

On July 1, 2019, pro-democracy protesters entered the Legislative Council chamber to voice t

Activist Ventus Lau and actor Gregory Wong were among those who were charged with "entering or attempting to enter the Chamber or the precincts of the Chamber". On June 9, the court suddenly changed their charges to rioting. This means that the maximum sentence they will face jumped from 3 months to 10 years.

When they were mentioned in court on June 10, about 50 citizens showed support outside the court.

Before entering the court, Lau said, apart from the 12 protesters being charged in the incident on July 1 2019, the other 600 protestors facing rioting charges need equal attention. "Say if one coach bus takes 100 passengers, that means there are 6 full loaded coaches of people who are facing up to 10 years in jail. They bet their future on this fight just to speak out for Hong Kongers".

"On this day which marks the one year anniversary of Hong Kong's movement, we need to keep the our five demands in mind, especially the 'retraction of characterisation of protests as rioting'", Lau added, "When you look at the 600+ civilians being charged with rioting, we can't afford to give up".

Actor Gregory Wong was also present in the court hearing. He described the change of charge as "white terror", and said he was already prepared to be charged from the moment he took part in the movement. Wong hopes that HongKongers can keeping fighting despite the government's suppression.

Among the supporters who showed up, a middle school student said he rushed to the court right after school. "The fact that they changed the charges to rioting on no other day but this anniversary day has made me realise that Hong Kongers have to persist in fighting, until the day Hong Kong become independent."

However, just one day after the event has started, the authorities intervened by sending 6 to 7 officers from the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (#FEHD) to the venue. Despite that the exhibition is held as a private event that requires advanced booking, the authorities claimed that the group lacks the "license" for "places of public entertainment".

Law Tsz-wai, the convenor of the group Local Youth Will said they had expected that the authorities would try to interfere and they would never give in.

The Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress passed the Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law; any individual who fails to cooperate with the countermeasures will be held accountable

The Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China closed today (10th June) in Beijing, according to the CCTV, the decision and proposal of Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law has passed during the meeting. Now, the proposal of Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law still has not published. European and American countries have been countered by Chinese government due to the issues of Xinjiang human rights, Hong Kong’s situation, and annunciation to sanction the Chinese and Hong Kong officials. According to the interview of Director Tian Feilong which podcasted by Now News, he described that proposal will be a “legal weapon” to counter external interference. And he said Hong Kong is necessarily to cooperate with the law, stated that after the law has been passed, it might be included in Annex III of Hong Kong’s basic law, or Hong Kong government may revise and formulate relevant local laws on its own.

The Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law also sets out, the relevant departments of the State Council can take measures, including not issuing visas, not allowing the entry, log-outing visas or even deporting; sealing up, seizing, and freezing movable, immovable, and other various properties in China; and prohibit or restrict organisations and individuals in China from conducting transactions and cooperation with them, etc.

Tian indicated, in the past, China faced sanctions mainly through the administrative measures of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Commerce, which were limited to the economic and foreign trade areas of the original Ministry of Commerce and blocked them. The individual countermeasures announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are only administrative in nature. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the relevant legal system. He described the "Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law" as a "legal toolbox" to counter external interference, and to make countermeasures act in accordance with the law, forming a stronger law enforcement force.

#AmnestyInternational: #China has "created a dystopian hellscape on a staggering scale" in #Xinjiang

//“The Chinese authorities have created a dystopian hellscape on a staggering scale in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region,” said Agnès Callamard, Amnesty International’s Secretary General.

“Uyghurs, Kazakhs and other Muslim minorities face crimes against humanity and other serious human rights violations that threaten to erase their religious and cultural identities."

“It should shock the conscience of humanity that massive numbers of people have been subjected to brainwashing, torture and other degrading treatment in internment camps, while millions more live in fear amid a vast surveillance apparatus.”

From the moment they entered the prison-like internment camps, detainees’ lives were extraordinarily regimented. They had no privacy or autonomy, and they faced harsh punishments – sometimes collectively with their cellmates – for trivial disobedience. Internees were forbidden to speak freely to each other, and they were severely punished when they responded to prison guards or other officials in their native tongues instead of Mandarin. Every activity in the detainees’ daily routine was pre-ordained and their behaviour was constantly monitored and evaluated....

Every former detainee Amnesty International interviewed suffered torture or other ill-treatment.

This included the cumulative psychological effect of their daily dehumanization, as well as physical torture in the form of beatings, electric shocks, solitary confinement, deprivation of food, water and sleep, exposure to extreme cold, and the abusive use of restraints, including torture tools like tiger chairs. Some reported being restrained in a tiger chair for 24 hours or more...

The Chinese government has gone to extraordinary lengths to cover up its violations of international human rights law in Xinjiang. Authorities threaten, detain and mistreat anyone who speaks out...//

China’s Uyghurs living in a ‘dystopian hellscape’, says Amnesty report

Amnesty International has collected new evidence of human rights abuses in the Xinjiang region of China, which it says has become a “dystopian hellscape” for hundreds of thousands of Muslims subjected to mass internment and torture.

The human rights organisation has collected more than 50 new accounts from Uyghurs, Kazakhs and other predominantly Muslim ethnic minorities who claim to have been subjected to mass internment and torture in police stations and camps in the region.

Conservative leadership contender Patrick Brown wins support of Beijing-allied groups, senator

After their party lost another federal election last year, the Chinese Canadian Conservative Association (CCCA) made some striking comments about the Tory platform — and Canada’s relations with Beijing.

Spokesman Joe Li said the Conservative push for a tougher stance on China had alienated voters of Chinese descent and cost the party three ridings.
