Student Activist Cuts Ties with Chinese Relatives and Friends, Hopes Chinese Police Force would Stop Bothering Them

In a Facebook post published on Jan 23, 2021, Student Localism convenor Wong Yat-Chin said that his family and friends in mainland China were approached by police at their homes, and were questioned about Wong's activities in Hong Kong. At least 10 relatives and friends were approached that way, Wong said, including primary school classmates with whom he had no contact for 10 years.

This was a worrying development, Wong said. "It's like I've become CCP's number one public enemy." He announced on his Facebook page that he had cut off all ties with those being targeted by Chinese police; he hopes that Chinese authorities would no longer bother them because of him.

Meanwhile in Hong Kong, Wong's parents have also been "doxxed": their personal details have been posted online some time ago. Wong himself was being followed when hosting street booths, by individuals who claimed to be police officers. He felt that the threat was becoming more imminent, worrying that authorities would also harass his family members in Hong Kong one day.

If worse comes to worst, Wong said he would also cut ties with his family. "[My family] doesn't even know what I'm doing, and they wouldn't interfere," he said. "If even Hong Kong authorities are taking action, then I might need to cut off from my family too."

The booth is held by #StudentPoliticism together with Hospital Authority Employees Alliance (#HAEA).

In addition to calling for the boycott of the tracking app, they also call attention to the police's political persecution of the participants in the "35+" pro-democracy primary elections in 2020.

Spokesperson of Student Politicism Wong Yat-Chin encouraged citizens to attend the court hearing to show support for the pro-democracy camp.

In Mongkok, thd police deployed over 30 officers to surround the small street booth; at one point, the officers occupied two-thirds of the pedestrian walkway. They left after recording personal details of the activists, and warned them not to be too loud.

In less than an hour later, the police hoisted the "#purpleflag" warning civilians in the area of potentially "violating the #NationalSecurityLaw".

"Local Youth Will" is a pro-democracy concern group recently established by former cabinet member of the now-dissolved students' union of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK), Law Tsz Wai; external affairs vice-president of the current students' union of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (#PolyU), Cheung Sum-yee; and former spokeperson of #StudentPoliticism, Chu Wai-ying.

At a gallery called Parallel Space located in Shum Shui Po, photos, banners and art installations relating to the pro-democracy movement are displayed.

The group hopes that the memories of the #AntiELAB movement can be passed on, despite the authorities' incessant attempts to alter history.

On June 12, 2021, the two pro-democracy youth were still detained by the police. Their fellow group members held a press meeting to reiterate their stance and express their determination.

The group clarified that in the past, when they mentioned the 2019 #AntiELAB movement, the use of force in protests was recounted as events but never promoted as a strategy. Their goal is to take part in civic education.

The group said the authorities has forced Hong Kong to enter an era of #WhiteTerror.

On June 12, the two year-mark of the first police-civilian clash in the 2019 pro-democracy movement, the group will not take any collective action, but every individual can speak up in defense of freedom and stay true to the original cause of the 2019 ptotests.
