China announced sanctions against Pompeo and 28 others, denouncing serious violations of China's sovereignty and banning entry to China, Hong Kong and Macau.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China issued a press released during the U.S. president inauguration, announcing sanctions against 28 persons, including Mike Pompeo, the Former United States Secretary of State, criticizing them for "seriously violated China's sovereignty" and "offended the Chinese people". The 28 individuals and their families will be prohibited from entering mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau.

Just half an hour after U.S. president Joe Biden was sworn in and the inauguration ceremony was still in progress, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China issued a press release announcing decision to impose sanction. "Over the past few years, some anti-China politicians in the United States, out of their selfish political interests and prejudice and hatred against China and showing no regard for the interests of the Chinese and American people, have planned, promoted and executed a series of crazy moves which have gravely interfered in China's internal affairs, undermined China's interests, offended the Chinese people, and seriously disrupted China-U.S. relations.", the Foreign Ministry spokesperson announced.

Europe has handed China a strategic victory

Europe has handed China a strategic victory

The EU-China deal was pushed hard by Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, and concluded right at the end of her country’s presidency of the EU. EU has signalled that it doesn’t care about all that over the past year include t crushe the freedom of Hong Kong, intensify oppression in Xinjiang and kill Indian troops

The EU says that this deal will “discipline the behaviour” of China’s state-owned enterprises, which will now be required “to act in accordance with commercial considerations”.

It is naive to believe that China will respect the agreement it has signed

Over the past year, China has repeatedly demonstrated its willingness to ignore treaty commitments. Its new national security law violates an agreement with Britain that guaranteed the autonomy of Hong Kong. China has also imposed tariffs on Australian goods in violation of the China-Australia free trade agreement.

Letter: EU should heed lessons of Hong Kong in China deal

The EU thinks that the EU-China Comprehensive Agreement on Investment (CAI) can bind China into better labour practices and fairer trade practices. This is an utter delusion.

In 2020, China demonstrated how they renege on its treaty-bound obligations to keep Hong Kong free for fifty years. It is disappointing to learn that the city-state’s death-knell does not teach the world anything about China.

Hong Kong arrests 53 for plot to 'overthrow' govt in latest crackdown on dissent

Mass arrest of 53 democracy activists on January 6 was the biggest crackdown since the National Security Law imposed by Beijing in June 2020.

“The Chinese Communist Party has further turned the screw in Hong Kong,” said Chris Patten, the last British governor of Hong Kong. “Liberal democracies around the world must continue to speak out against the brutal destruction of a free society.”

“The mass arrest of politicians and activists in Hong Kong is a grievous attack on Hong Kong’s rights and freedoms as protected under the Joint Declaration,” British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said, adding that China had deliberately misled the world about its security law.

"The Government Does Not Even Know There Are Cats in the Market": District Councillors Speak Up For Civilians in Lockdown Area

Directly elected district councillors working for the lockdown district talked to the press on the afternoon of Jan 24, 2021, responding to the authorities' intention to step up the lockdown measures in other areas, after the last-minute announcement of a compulsory lockdown at 4am on Jan 23, 2021.

The district councillors demanded the Hong Kong government to consider the obstruction and the loss caused to the affected residents and business operators, despite the authorities' denial.

The district councillors shared their concerns and the difficulties faced by the residents, workers and business owners in the restricted area.

For instance, in addition to many residents' complaints about the quality and the quantity of food provided by the government, some residents living at No. 40 Reclamation Street did not receive any food supply at all. To make it worse. the government's Home Affairs Department did not provide adequate support.

In another incident, a street stall operator asked the district council for help, as her two cats were locked up in the stall located in the restricted area. In the end, the firemen broke the padlock and released her two cats. Otherwise, her two cats, aged 10 and 25, could have starved to death after the two-day lockdown.

These incidents revealed the government's failure to understand the need of the civilians and the everyday operation of the community on the district level.

On behalf of the affected community, the district councillors demand the government to apologize and make corresponding compensation.

Residents desperate for decent food after lockdown

//A resident surnamed Cheng said he had been eating instant noodles for two days. He said he was going to leave immediately and have dinner at his mother's home. Another resident said she had also been living off instant noodles as she didn't have a stove. She said she would go and buy some warm food.

Meanwhile a man, surnamed Tsang, said he was relieved that he could finally get out of his home.

“I was so bored as I live alone. I had run out of everything. I need to buy a pack of cigarettes,” he said.

One man, a Muslim, said the government had failed to provide Halal food. Luncheon meat, containing pork which is forbidden to Muslims, had been included in government food packages, though other items, such as pasta and tinned tuna, were also provided.

“We don't have anything to eat because we are Muslims and we eat Halal food,” he said.//
