Resident Lodged Complaint After Police Fired Tear Gas into the Flat; Police Accused her of Illegally Keeping the Cartridge

In mid-November 2019, Hong Kong police shot a tear gas bomb into a residential building. The grenade went through a window located on the fifth floor and exploded inside the flat.

Mrs Cheng, one of the residents has lodged a complaint to the Complaints and Internal Investigations Branch (C&IIB) of the police but she felt that the police refused to offer any help.

“After the tear gas has been fired into the house, I’ve sent letters to the police force for 2 times, making a request of the police to collect the tear gas cartridge back. However no reply was issued but a call from the C&IIB, warning her that it is illegal to keep a tear gas cartridge at home.” Mrs Cheng said.

Mrs Cheng felt speechless about the incident as she was accused illegal of keeping the cartridge while no member of the police force is willing to collect it.

Coronavirus shakes citizens' faith in Chinese government: “Leaders in this country are horrible”

The Guardian #Jan24

[GoHK's note: According to CNN report on 24 January, advisers to the CDC say a lack of data from China about the Wuhan coronavirus is curtailing international efforts to quell the outbreak.]

//The outbreak has left Chinese people facing a miserable new year and Xi Jinping a key test

As Chinese authorities scramble to restrict an illness that emerged a month ago, citizens are asking whether their government has failed them by failing to disclose information and not acting decisively or early enough.

Less than a week ago, officials in Wuhan, where the virus was detected, said the mystery illness posed little danger and there was no evidence it could be passed from human to human. China’s national health commission said the situation was “preventable” and “controllable”.//

SARS Support Group Calls for Ban for Entering Hong Kong for Non-locals Who Visited Wuhan in the Past Month

The Hong Kong SARS Mutual Help Association, representing more than 300 patients who recovered from the SARS epidemic in 2003, called for the Government to truly learn the hard lessons of SARS and make every effort to prevent the epidemic from affecting the city's economy and livelihood.

The Association urge the government to take all feasible measures to minimise the impact of the Wuhan pneumonia on Hong Kong, including prohibiting non-locals who have visited Wuhan in the past month from entering Hong Kong. Besides, it also asked for those who travelled from China, be it Mainlanders or Hong Kong residents to complete a health declaration. The Association was of the view that if the situation concerning Wuhan Pneumonia continued to deteriorate, the government should consider prohibiting all Mainlanders from coming to Hong Kong until the situation improves.

Cathay Pacific Aircraft Carried a Wuhan Coronavirus victim Continued to be Used Without Disinfection for Over 30 Times

The second confirmed case of Wuhan pneumonia in Japan was a passenger who transited from Wuhan to Tokyo via Hong Kong on January 19. Cathay Pacific confirmed the two flights the patient took this evening (Jan 24) and said it would disinfect the two aeroplanes.

According to records, the patient stayed in Hong Kong shortly for only 1 hour and 50 minutes, but the two aeroplanes he flew on were later used for another 18 and 15 flights to and from 12 destinations respectively.

Staff members of Cathay Pacific revealed that routine cleaning work of a plane is usually roughly conducted. They expressed their deep concern that it is insufficient to inhabit any virus.

Wuhan Pneumonia: Closing the border of city for hiding the truth of epidemic? Scholars claimed: Face recognition and Social Credit system disappeared

Wuhan Pneumonia epidemic is spreading, and the number of confrmed cases is skyrocketing, out of Chinese government’s control and expectation. The Chinese government is suspected for concealing the real situation of the epidemic and even closes the borders of several cities. In view of this, I-Chung Lai, the president of Cross-Strait Interflow Prospect Foundation, posted on his Facebook, ‘For the time being, the most powerful face recognition and social credit system launched by China disappeared suddenly.’

Lai pointed out, the Chinese government set up face recognition and social credit system for the sake of public safety”, and thus they should be suitable for dealing with public health crisis like Wuhan Pneumonia at the moment. He continued, ‘The systems can be used for tracing the contact history of patients, and setting up a better protection barrier,’ he continued to ask, ‘Why the system vanished when there is desperate need for them?’

Outraged and disappointed, Lai condemned that the Chinese government repeated the history of the Black Death epidemic in the Middle Age. He said, ‘Some unwise Taiwanese still appreciating what have done by the Communist officials, and think that everything will be fine under SOP (Standard Operation Procedure).’

Finally, Lai revealed, that the “Face recognition and Social Credit system” can be used down to the level of individuals, and the work of combating with disease as precise as a doctor using his scalpel in the course of surgery. He continued that, the Chinese government built up the system for social surveillance, and combating with public health crisis is surely the most reasonable case for applying that. ‘But now the Communist government abandoned that. What is the Chinese government hiding?'

Residents desperate for decent food after lockdown

//A resident surnamed Cheng said he had been eating instant noodles for two days. He said he was going to leave immediately and have dinner at his mother's home. Another resident said she had also been living off instant noodles as she didn't have a stove. She said she would go and buy some warm food.

Meanwhile a man, surnamed Tsang, said he was relieved that he could finally get out of his home.

“I was so bored as I live alone. I had run out of everything. I need to buy a pack of cigarettes,” he said.

One man, a Muslim, said the government had failed to provide Halal food. Luncheon meat, containing pork which is forbidden to Muslims, had been included in government food packages, though other items, such as pasta and tinned tuna, were also provided.

“We don't have anything to eat because we are Muslims and we eat Halal food,” he said.//

Pregnant Woman in Hong Kong Suffers Premature Delivery and Severe Bleeding after Police Brutality

A Hong Kong civilian in her 7 months of pregnancy was intercepted and searched for unknown reason by police officers on January 20, 2021.

During the search operation, she was reportedly being cuffed with her hands at her back, pulled and dragged by officers on the ground. Later on, she was arrested on suspicion of “obstructing police officer for conducting duties”.

The pregnant woman surnamed Lau told reporters that with concern for COVID19, she asked to stand aloof to three other civilians at the scene of the police operation while handing in her ID card for police investigation as requested.

In response to her request, a police officer hurled insults at her, calling her “damn fat woman”. Lau said she repeatedly told the police officers that she is pregnant. The officers ignored her even when she hunched on the ground due to acute pain and plead for immediate medical assistance.

A couple of days later, she was hospitalized on January 23, 2021 for symptoms of premature birth and severe bleeding. She later delivered a baby boy prematurely who was admitted to the intensive care ward for critical conditions.

Student Activist Cuts Ties with Chinese Relatives and Friends, Hopes Chinese Police Force would Stop Bothering Them

In a Facebook post published on Jan 23, 2021, Student Localism convenor Wong Yat-Chin said that his family and friends in mainland China were approached by police at their homes, and were questioned about Wong's activities in Hong Kong. At least 10 relatives and friends were approached that way, Wong said, including primary school classmates with whom he had no contact for 10 years.

This was a worrying development, Wong said. "It's like I've become CCP's number one public enemy." He announced on his Facebook page that he had cut off all ties with those being targeted by Chinese police; he hopes that Chinese authorities would no longer bother them because of him.

Meanwhile in Hong Kong, Wong's parents have also been "doxxed": their personal details have been posted online some time ago. Wong himself was being followed when hosting street booths, by individuals who claimed to be police officers. He felt that the threat was becoming more imminent, worrying that authorities would also harass his family members in Hong Kong one day.

If worse comes to worst, Wong said he would also cut ties with his family. "[My family] doesn't even know what I'm doing, and they wouldn't interfere," he said. "If even Hong Kong authorities are taking action, then I might need to cut off from my family too."

‘My heart is still with Hong Kong’: Activists in exile make lives in Canada, but many still live in fear

Before joining the first pollical political protest during the Umbrella Movement, Peter, anonym, was a typica bystander. He was in Hong Kong in the 1980s and had a good career and a comfortable living , like many his generation.

“Peaceful rallies are meaningless. They are like going to karaoke. When you are done, everyone just goes home, with little accomplished,” says Peter.

He began joining calls to cause local “disruptions” against the Mainland Chinese shoppers jamming Hong Kong streets and driving up prices of necessities, and volunteered in the political campaigns to support “localist candidates.”

Peter, an activist in exile and granted asylum lately in Canada said, “I’m physically here but my heart is still with Hong Kong.” He’s going to school in this country and would like to pursue a higher education. He believes a collaborative international community can stop an emboldened China.

Hong Kong Crackdown Is an Early Test for Biden

Hong Kong Crackdown Is an Early Test for Biden

In the beginning of this year, a thousand police officers armed with China’s tough new national security law arrested dozens of opposition legislators, lawyers and activists, who had organized and participated in an unofficial “primary” vote to select candidates for the 70-seat Legislative Council.

One minute after President Biden took office, China announced sanctions against 28 departing and former Trump administration officials, including Mr. Pompeo declaring that China's policies against Muslims in its Xinjiang region constitute a “genocide” and “crimes against humanity.”

Hong Kong is intolerable to the Chinese Communists not only as a gadfly, but as a standing rebuttal to Mr. Xi’s illiberal ideology.

Whatever signal China may have been trying to send by its crackdown on dissenters, the Biden administration should continue to stand with the people of Hong Kong.
