A surge of articles on “Many countries aspire to return to China” appears in China. The company publishing the posts was closed long ago

(16 Apr) Recently, an article titled “Why Kazakhstan wants to return to China?” circulated in Mainland China, which sparked a diplomatic storm over which Kazakhstan summoned the Chinese ambassador to express discontent. This incident drew heated discussions, and netizens discovered more articles on WeChat on "Why does one want to return to China?”. According to media reports, the company behind the account in question has already been closed last year, yet officials were unable to explain why there have been recent posts from the account.

Articles titled “Why does (this country) aspire to return to China?” have flooded the internet, and the places mentioned were Vietnam, India’s Manipur, Myanmar’s Kokang, Russian border tribes and even African Chinese etc. These articles are considered as “canned text”.

The Paper reported that a public account named “The latest car information” published near 30 articles on “Why does (this country) aspire to return to China?” and “Why did (this country) become independent from China?”. For example, on 5 Feb, the account in question published an article named “Why India’s Manipur wants to return to China?” claimed that according to history, Manipur’s connection with China began in the Western Han Dynasty, "though they are physically abroad, they have always longed to return to their motherland”. The account published another article on 28 Mar, titled “Which countries desire to return to China the most?” The list includes Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Mongolia, etc.

WeChat: 227 offending articles deleted and 153 accounts blocked

The report stated that the company registered to the account in question is Crayon Network Studio, in Qujiang New District, Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, who registered its public account on 7 Jan last year. However, according to a staff from the Xi’an Qujiang New District Cyberspace Administration Office, that company was closed on 29 Jul last year, and the articles from its WeChat public account have been blocked since. Why is it still possible for the account to publish articles? “This problem is too technical and further understanding is needed”, the staff said.

WeChat responded that such articles involved exaggerated and misleading information, and has now deleted 227 offending articles related to “aspire to return to China”. 153 public accounts were also blocked.

British Law Firm Being Sanctioned and Responded on China's Stupidity: Independent Practitioners Can Have Different Views as Clients and Colleagues

Ministry of Foreign Affairs in China announced to sanction nine personnel and four entities, including British Essex Court Chambers. The chair of the Bar Human Rights Committee and Head of Cloisters Human Rights Practice Group, Schona Jolly, described the sanctions from China are “maladroit”, as lawyers are work in the same office but are all independent and might not agree with the views of clients and colleagues. She reiterated that China should accept the independent investigation by the international society on Xinjiang human rights problems instead of engaging “the diplomatic tactics”.

Schona Jolly also indicated that according to The Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers defined by the United Nations, lawyers' professional work should not be intimidated by sanctions and should not be implicated by clients. She stated that the sanctions to the whole lawyer office from China are “maladroit” as they work at the same office but are independent and self-employed practitioners, not necessarily sharing their professional points of views with other colleagues and clients. China sanctions the whole structure (i.e. the whole office) will only reflect their misunderstanding on the British law professional operations and the independence of lawyers.

China indefinitely suspends Strategic Economic Dialogue, accuse Australia's “Cold War mindset” for disrupting normal exchanges

China National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) issued a statement on Thursday (5 May), saying that it has decided to suspend the China-Australia Strategic Economic Dialogue indefinitely due to Australian government's measures to disrupt the normal exchanges and cooperation out of “Cold War mindset and ideological discrimination”. This is the first diplomatic mechanism that has been formally frozen since the relationship between the two countries deteriorated.

The relation between China and Australia continues to be tense, Australia has been criticizing China on human rights issues in Hong Kong and Xinjiang for many times. Last month the Australian Federal Government cancelled the “Belt and Road” agreements between Victoria state government and China. ABC quoted the analysis saying that it caused China's discontent.

“Some Australian Commonwealth government officials launched a series of measures to disrupt the normal exchanges and cooperation between China and Australia out of Cold War mindset and ideological discrimination”, said NDRC in a statement. It declared that the decision is “based on the current attitude of the Australian Commonwealth Government toward China-Australia cooperation”, and decides to indefinitely suspend all activities under the framework of the China-Australia Strategic Economic Dialogue.

Pelosi calls for the international community for a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics; Zhao Lijian accuse US to be afraid of seeing China's "vigorous development of human rights"

As international community demands for boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics growing, US Congress held a hearing on 18th, in which the House of Representatives speaker Nancy Pelosi proposed leading countries to diplomatic boycott the Beijing Winter Olympics. Chinese Spokesperson of Foreign Affairs Zhao Lijian responded on the 19th that U.S. were calling on countries not to participating the Winter Olympics because they are afraid that people from all over the world would see the "fact" of China's "vigorous development of human rights".

In a US Congress hearing on Tuesday, Nancy Pelosi proposed a diplomatic boycott of 2002 Beijing Winter Olympics, called for countries leaders not to go there to honour China. “For heads of state to go to China in light of a genocide that is ongoing – while you’re sitting there in your seat – really begs the question: what moral authority do you have to speak again about human rights any place in the world?” she said.
