Hongkongers: On Fear

“You have your fears. So do I.
The fear of pain, the fear of bullets, the fear of being bludgeoned.
But I want freedom. I want our martyrs acquitted!"

“The coldness of justice is not as concerning as compared to the coldness of our hearts -
Keep the fire burning.”

The old Hong Kong will be but a memory under the National Security Law. Yet, in the ruins, an inextinguishable fire burns. Darkness is but the absence of light. Likewise, the darkness brought upon by evil dictators shall perish in the presence of the light of freedom and truth.

Hongkongers Stand Strong

Since June 2019, Hongkongers have rejuvenated the city's fight for democratization and equal political participation in the anti-extradition bill protests.

One year later, Hongkongers are facing even more draconian laws imposed by the Hong Kong government and the Chinese Communist Party. Without a democratic system, Hongkongers can neither vote for their government nor a fully representative legislature which would speak for the population.

In Oct 2019, the Hong Kong government bypassed the city's legislature to enact the Mask Ban, breaching the constitution. This time Beijing plans to unilaterally insert the National Security Law into Hong Kong's Basic Law that would possibly endorse secret police acitivity, Chinese legal concepts and extradition to China in Hong Kong.

Facing the tyranny, Hongkongers on May 24, 2020 bravely fight on, showing the world their aspiration for freedom and determination to live with dignity.

Hong Kong Police, 'Asia's Finest'

On May 24, the police fired the first wave of tear gas at 1pm.

A police almost tripped himself, when he was immersed in shooting pepper spray pellets at civilians.

Then, another police threw a hand-held tear gas grenade at the foot of a flyover, making it bounce to the press and explode on a journalist.

The police were also affected as they did not have enough time to react and put on their respirator masks.

Be Water, Be On Fire

Underneath the gleaming city of glass and steel, a flame of flesh and blood has been relit,
a flame ignited by pure grit, determination and idealism.

Now the phantoms of winter have faded, and summer has arrived.

With heat the fire shall roar once more like it did,
across the central plains for thousands of years.

But this year, winter and spring have allowed the grass to grow.

Now that summer has come again, adding more fuel for fire on the scorched prairie.

The fire shall roar brighter and hotter than it ever has, over the shadowy bays of this fragrant harbour.

White House National Security Advisor: Hong Kong would no longer be the Asian financial centre if China takes over

National Security Adviser Robert O'Brien on May 24 describes the national security law as China's "takeover" of Hong Kong.

If that happens, the US would be "unable to certify that Hong Kong maintains a high degree of autonomy" and sanctions would be imposed on Hong Kong and China.

In other words, Hong Kong's special status in US law, which has helped it maintain its position as a global financial centre, would be threatened. Global corporations would have no reason to remain, O'Brien said.

"One reason that they came to Hong Kong is because there was the rule of law, there was a free enterprise system, there was a capitalist system, there was democracy and local legislative elections," O'Brien said.

"If all those things go away, I'm not sure how the financial community can stay there."

The Pope Call On Catholics Worldwide To Pray Hard for Church in China

May 24 was proclaimed a "Day of Prayer for the Church in China". Pope Francis called on the Catholics throughout the world to pray for the church in China, after the Sunday Mass in the Vatican on May 23, amid arrest of clergy and tear down of church crosses in Hebei Province by hundreds of police. He indicated that believers in China are his deepest concern, and invite global Christian to pray for Chinese faithful, helping them to build justice and peace in their country.

Before the Pope's call, several Catholics clergy and believers in China, including Bishop Zhang Weizhu, was arrested for "organizing prayer activities". The Burmese Cardinal Charles Maung Bo, who previously denounced China for covering up the pandemic, had launched a prayer campaign on March 14 and called for a day of prayer for the Church in China. It aroused widespread response including US congressman, parliament members from UK, Canada, and other countries, as well as some US bishops. The activity has expanded on May and setup the "Global Prayer for China" page.

612 Fund Trustees and Secretary Plead Not Guilty for "Non-registered organisation" Charge

Five trustees of the 612 Humanitarian Relief Fund, which stopped operation last year, was arrested by National Security police earlier and were accused of "conspiracy to collude with foreign forces or foreign forces". They were were all granted bail, pending investigations.

The five trustees are: Joseph Zen Ze-Kiun (90 years old), a Cardinal of the Catholic Church, Dr. Margaret Ng Ngoi-yee (74), a practising barrister, Dr. Po-Keung Hui, a former Adjunct Associate Professor in the Departure of Cultural Studies at the Lingnan University, Cyd Ho Sau-Lan (67, currently serving another protest-related sentence), a former LegCo member, and singer Denise Ho (45).

The trustees, as well as Sze Ching-Wee, the fund’s secretary, were accused of "failing to apply for registration or exemption from registration within the specified time" under the Society Ordinance and were on trial at West Kowloon Magistrates' Court this morning (23th).

All six defendants pleaded not guilty, and a hearing is scheduled for Sept 19-23.

Barrister Robert Pang, who represented the six, criticized the persecution for expanding the list of witnesses from 9 to 17 at the last minute. He also raised the legal question of whether the 612 Humanitarian Relief Fund could be considered a "society", and said that this is the crux of the entire case.

Margaret Ng, one of the accused and also a veteran barrister, criticized the prosecution's lack of preparation: "Could you give us another copy of the brief facts? There's five of us, and we're sharing one copy." She also criticized the Department of Justice (#DOJ) for such an unprepared prosecution: "They only sent these [documents] to us right before court!"

When Cardinal Zen stepped out of court afterwards, supporters shouted encouragements to him: "Cardinal, hang on!" "Cardinal, take care!" "Cardinal, peace be with you!"
