Editor's note: The following are comments made by mainland Chinese on social media platform #Weibo in China. Their reaction towards the landslide victory by the pro-democracy candidates in the 2019 Hong Kong District Council election range from hostile, cynical to indifferent.

All these have a lot to tell about the Chinese mentality towards values such as freedom, democracy that are cherished by Hongkongers and the world.

“This [election] is no longer about the pro-establishment [camp] losing, it is about them losing very disgracefully. It is expected that the pro-establishment [camp] will only get the table scraps of the pro-democracy [camp].
