How do People in China React to the Landslide Victory of the Pro-democracy Front in Hong Kong District Council Election?

Part 1/5
: Chinese Nationalism as a Shield

Editor's note: The following are comments made by mainland Chinese on social media platform #Weibo in China. Their reaction towards the landslide victory by the pro-democracy candidates in the 2019 Hong Kong District Council election range from hostile, cynical to indifferent.

All these have a lot to tell about the Chinese mentality towards values such as freedom, democracy that are cherished by Hongkongers and the world.

Chinese Netizen #1:
“This [election] is no longer about the pro-establishment [camp] losing, it is about them losing very disgracefully. It is expected that the pro-establishment [camp] will only get the table scraps of the pro-democracy [camp]. Such a real reflection of Hong Kong’s popular will is a slap to the face of the central government. The 22 years of united front work in Hong Kong is a failure. Really embarrassing!”

Chinese Netizen #2:
“Weibo can no longer use the videos of a few Hong Kongers who ‘love the country and Hong Kong’ to console Mainland China. Most Hong Kongers view Mainland China with enmity and do not identify as a Chinese. This is a fact.

Chinese Netizen #3:
What have we got; a historical night. Tonight is the collective transformation of Mainland Chinese’s emotional cognition towards Hong Kongers. The cruelest face off for this brotherly tie. It is the focal point of awakening for those who are not awake. Today the majority of [Hong Kongers] voted – they want to let you see Hong Kong’s popular will! It is their urgent call to you to get far away from them, and not interfere with them!

Chinese Netizen #4:
“Looking at the number of votes, you will know how many rioters are there in Hong Kong. Hong Kong police is also a ‘cow pussy’ with only 30,000 of them having to fight a few millions of rioters.”

Replies to Netizen #4:
“It feels like our policy is to be a dog-licker until we have nothing left, and still fuxking talks about being fellow countryman, more than half of Hong Kong[ers] are reactionary forces that are causing divisions in our country.”

“Youth that are under the age of 18 are more ‘yellow’.” (note: “yellow ribbon’ refers to pro-democracy supporters in Hong Kong)

Chinese Netizen #5:
“I once have expectations about Hong Kong’s silent majority, but it has proven to be wishful thinking on my part. Even Yuen Long’s citizens are … (the same)
The education of one generation after another has already started to be rotten to the root. America has long been playing this round of chess. A colour revolution is not exceptional if it works well. See the reality clearly, give up the fantasies, and do not paint illusions of peace. [I] will not have any expectations anymore.

Replies to Netizen #5:
“This is a devastating one, at least 99 [percent of elected seats won by the pro-democracy camp].”

“Almost 80 [percent], I thought it would be about 50-50 [percent] but it ended up to be my wishful thinking.”

Chinese Netizen #6:
“The reference value is of greater significance than the actual value, but it still goes down to the election poll”

Chinese Netizen #7:
“Junius Ho is still lagging behind by over a thousand votes”

Reply to Netizen #7:
“Yes I saw it, such an unexpected difference, this is outrageous”

Netizen #8:
“Eight words— Clearly grasp the situation, give up the fantasies”

Reply to Netizen #8:
“I really don’t think others are being brainwashed, instead, it is us who are being brainwashed.”

How do People in China React to the Landslide Victory of the Pro-democracy Front in Hong Kong District Council Election?

Part 2/5: Hong Kong and Taiwan

Chinese Netizen #9:
“The propaganda bureau reports only the good news and not the bad news, I suggest dismissing the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government – the office has utterly failed in connecting Mainland China with Hong Kong!”

Replies to Netizen #9:

“I feel utterly hopeless towards the propaganda organization in China. They failed to completely brainwash citizens in mainland China even under the premise of a firewall (this is merely an analogy, all publicity in the world is a type of #brainwash). And yet you still expect them to go out and play with others? What I am afraid of is that all organizations are as useless as the propaganda organization. This possibility is not to be ruled out.”

Chinese Netizen #10:
“The united front work going on for the past years have been a horrible mess; there are only two places— Hong Kong and Taiwan, but yet not one has been made definite. The more united front work done, the more independence-seeking— with such low work efficiency I really wonder if it can meet its annual KPIs? Are they counting on bullshit for their annual performance review?”

Chinese Netizen #11:
“I used to think that Hong Kong is very awesome, it is the pearl of the orient. Now, [Hong Kong] has turned out to be like the Taiwanese peasants from across. It has become the pig of the orient.”

Replies to Netizen #11:

“Ha ha ha, this is on point!”

“Agree, the web is all about anti-extradition to China, they are all suppressing China. Aw, our brother China is very pathetic.”

Netizen #12:
“Objectively speaking, this time the central government is extremely humiliated, the rhetoric had all along been that rioters are the “minority” of the Hong Kong population. This time, the fact is that the pro-establishment camp has been scourged, what they called “minority” is, in fact, the real mainstream political will. If China still does not try to be open-minded and to really understand the ideas of “One Country Two Systems” and “Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong”, the "grenade" of Hong Kong would cause the central government misery for a long time.”

Replies to Netizen #12:
“You are wrong, the central government knew this very early on, but they just don’t want to crush Hong Kong people and the remaining patriots."

“As I have said all along, the silent majority in Hong Kong is the ‘yellow ribbons’, not those who dare not speak up. The ability to be chaotic for so long certainly shows the mainstream political will, otherwise, it would have been crushed very early on.”

Part 3/5: Chinese Netizens Claim Disapointed
and Demanded China to Punish Hong Kong

Chinese Netizen #13:
“Hong Kong’s voter turnout has exceeded 70 percent, you should roughly have an idea of the outcome, so that is the attitude of the majority of Hong Kong people. Hehe… I don’t have too much to say about this election, I felt completely disappointed towards Hong Kong!

Now I just hope that when the time comes to rebuild Hong Kong, the central government would cut Hong Kong off of monetary and labour support! Since the return of Hong Kong to China, what amount of money had the Central government spent in Hong Kong? Let's just consider the 2 financial crises, what amount of money had the Central government given to Hong Kong? Since the handover, Hong Kong had not paid any taxes to the central government. Hong Kong’s money has always been spent in Hong Kong, and the central government still has to subsidize Hong Kong! These monies are all hard-earned by Chinese citizens, what gives you the right to take hard-earned money from Chinese citizens to subsidize Hong Kong?

Hongkongers had destroyed their own place, what gives you the right to use Chinese citizens' money for the rebuilding of Hong Kong! If Hongkongers don’t suffer in poverty for two or three decades, they would not know how to behave!”

Chinese Netizen #14:
“With Junius Ho being defeated in the election, it is an utterly complete defeat at the Hong Kong District Council election, there’s nothing left for mainland Chinese to reminisce about. Hong Kong people can really do it, [they] can really make you look at them in a new light.”

Chinese Netizen #15:
“What is going to happen after, I care not, it’s already not important, we have already know the popular will of Hong Kong.”

Chinese Netizen #16:
“Nowadays, Hongkongers are a huge nuisance.

They dislike our China. They are willing to hand over the city's future to a bunch of young losers. After you messed up and screwed up, please don’t expect China to handle your mess.
Without the billions of tourists from Mainland China, let’s see what you will eat and drink.
Our motherland has so many great rivers and mountains anyway, I don’t care about going to your place at all.
You backwater place!”

Chinese Netizen #17:
“Would the favorable policies for Hong Kong still be implemented?
What about the 31 measures favorable to Taiwan?
What about the 26 measures favorable to Taiwan?
Would they still be implemented?
What about the XX liaison offices?
Aside from burning money, what else do you know?
You burnt money for so long and had only yielded a plethora of hatred… bravo.”

How do People in China React to the Landslide Victory of the Pro-democracy Front in Hong Kong District Council Election?

Part 4/5: Chinese Netizens Find Pro-democracy Voices "Hopeless"

Chinese Netizen #18:
“Hong Kong’s situation is different from what most people imagine. What the mainland Chinese see is actually a “Truman show”…”

Chinese Netizen #19:
“#HongKong #ICalledIt
I had always thought that the majority of Hong Kong people bears no sentiment towards Mainland China
I think that Chinese media only allow the public to see what they want the public to see

Chinese Netizen #20:
“With such an election outcome in Hong Kong, if you want to criticize you should criticize the country-loving ‘Big Vs’ Hong Kongers of Weibo (verified and popular #Weibo accounts) who have been brainwashing netizens ceaselessly; why would you criticize the central government? Hong Kong will always be the Hong Kong of the new China, it is only following the popular will and returning to its status as a fishing village. Way to go for the few millions of country-loving Hong Kongers! You are filled with courage!”

Chinese Netizen #21:
“Liberate Hong Kong, the revolution of our times?
This [election’s] choice could directly liberate Hong Kong to the status of a fishing village.

I am so distressed and disgusted, the pearl of the orient is getting further away”

Chinese Netizen #22:
"There is a sharp contrast between the expected and actual results of the Hong Kong District Council election. This represents the Hong Kong people’s popular will. So what caused us to be unable to see the truth before? What are the people who tried to hide the truth on Weibo and in public rhetoric? Hong Kong’s law courts and schools have issues… and our public rhetoric does not?”

Chinese Netizen #23:
“Hong Kong is hopeless”

Chinese Netizen #24:
“Hong Kong [has] 80% of yellow [ribbons] – isn’t this something everyone knows deep down? Is everyone still astonished by how the pro-establishment camp suffers a huge defeat? The difference between the pro-establishment and the pro-democracy is in the speed by which Hong Kong degenerates— the former being slower, while the latter faster. By the way, congratulations, in my life I could still witness the second return of Hong Kong (though I was too young during the first return and had no recollection) Lastly, I suggested that the Liaison Office of the Central’s People Government and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council seek for redemption by dying.”

Chinese Netizen #25
“Hong Kong’s voter turnout of 70%, huge victory by the pro-democracy camp, the popular will has revealed the urgent need to cut and seize Hong Kong’s functions and roles. No matter it is cooperation with Shanghai, Shenzhen, Macau, or Singapore, please urgently transfer (the cooperation opportunities) to protect Mainland China’s interests. Stop trying to shed blood and make concessions. Power and obligations are equal, Hong Kong did not pay even a cent of tax to the central government, hence the central government should never provide money to save Hong Kong”

Part 5/5: Chinese Netizens Condemn Demoncratic Practices in Hong Kong

Global Times editor Hu Xijin:
“The voting of the Hong Kong District Council election has ended at 10:30 pm on Sunday. The election results should be released at midnight. Because of Hong Kong’s special circumstance, the voter turnout rate is very high, I think such proactiveness is a good thing.”

Netizen #26 in reply to Global Times editor Hu Xijin:
“Chief Editor Hu, is this some sort of preventive vaccination for us? Face the reality!”

Reply to Netizen #26:
“The pro-establishment (camp) has completely fallen apart. Please stop saying "only a minor majority of activists are causing chaos in Hong Kong…" these are such self-deceptive words.”

Netizen #27 in reply to Global Times editor Hu Xijin:
“These are the classic self-comforting words. Of course, Hong Kong belongs to China! This is undeniable and there is no need to stress. In this "genuine" poll after the riot, if the pan-democrats win, this shows that there is an overwhelming ‘yellow’ force. This would strengthen the desire for separation and negatively impact the Hong Kong Legislative Council and Chief Executive election. The Chinese Central Government's control of Hong Kong will be obstructed and this would intensify the 'room' for international anti-China control. Someone needs to be responsible and immediately reflect on the government policy in the past five years since Occupy Central in 2014.”

Netizen #28 in reply to Global Times editor Hu Xijin:
“Chief Editor Hu you always have an excuse. This is your world and your rules. The Chinese National People's Congress has made it clear that they have crossed the line. Didn't the High Court also rule that the anti-mask regulation is unconstitutional? The pan-democrats' chances of winning are very high. Please face the reality. We need to reflect on our shortcomings for Hong Kong, the social commentaries, the legal system, education, etc. in order to have a future, not finding an excuse for everything and lie to ourselves. China is passive in many things because of people find excuses like you.”

Netizen #29 in reply to Global Times editor Hu Xijin:
“I believe this system is not suitable for China.”

Reply to Netizen #29:
“Elder Deng (Deng Xiaoping) had anticipated this a long time ago. Hence there has been no political reform, only economic reforms. Look at his classmate Chiang Ching-kuo (son of Chiang Kai Shek) who promoted political reform and had completely failed.”
(Another missing comment)
(Elections in countries with simple histories could still bring about rifts, and in a country with a complicated background in history, ethnicities, and religion such as China, what was brought about is catastrophe beyond recovery.)

Netizen #30 in reply to Global Times editor Hu Xijin:
“This is a poll conducted for the Chinese Government! The reality is that the majority of Hong Kong does not support the anti-extradition bill. They are not silent ones or afraid to speak up. They are against the extradition bill! The Chinese government should stop implementing policies that favour Hong Kong. There is no need to condone (Hong Kong's) behaviour. Raised wolves will eat people!”

Netizen #31 in reply to Global Times editor Hu Xijin:
“hey Hu, those who are elected in Hong Kong are horrible. The Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, the China Liaison Office, and the 22 tasks are all a complete failure. They need to revaluate and be held accountable. Apart from issuing press releases, these two departments have failed to impose any appropriate policies for Hong Kong. They are simply mantels and have dragged Hong Kong to this state. The US-China war has cause issues in Hong Kong and Taiwan issues. This is saddening.”
