U.S. National Security Advisor:  Chinese Hackers are Tampering with the U.S. Presidential Election Infrastructure

U.S. National Security Advisor Robert O'Brien has expressed concerns that China-linked hackers are targeting the infrastructure of the U.S. presidential election in November.

In an interview with CBS, O'Brien said that China would like President Trump to lose his bid for re-election. According to O’Brien, just like Russia and Iran, China is attempting to interfere with U.S. democracy by engaging in cyberattacks, phishing and other activities aimed at hacking government websites and election infrastructure, including the State Department's website.  He stressed that the U.S. will take every step necessary to fight against the attacks and protect the election infrastructure.

O'Brien also pointed out that the aforementioned hackers from China, Russia, Iran and other countries pose a considerable threat to the U.S.  He specifically mentioned that the Chinese government does not want Trump to be re-elected because of his tough stance on China.

He also warned that any country that attempts to interfere with free and fair elections in the U.S., whether it is in support of Biden or Trump, will face severe consequences.  "We're Americans.  We're not going to [allow] foreign countries [to decide on] who our next president is going to be," said O'Brien.

China's media coverage on US election rises sharply, in response to negative and confusing news.

In the wake of the deadlock in the US presidential election results, some Chinese official media, which used to keep a tight rein on coverage of the election process and vote count, have recently changed. The coverage has been significantly raised, but focusing on negative news such as the discrepancies between US media's vote projections, controversies over mail-in ballots and public protests. There were also notable reports on Democratic presidential candidate Biden when he overtook Trump in Georgia and Pennsylvania.

It has been reported that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has issued a directive on reports of US Presidential Election, that all news have to follow a "unified arrangement", based on "standardized manuscript" from Xinhua News Agency, with "no reprinting of foreign media without authorization, and no follow-up reports". Chinese media are also required to position themselves according to the "state spokesman's stance on the subject", and "strictly prevent anti-US seditious and incite messages such as 'boycott US'". This directive was confirmed by media workers.

The U.S. is Entering a Very Unusual Transition Period, said China state-owned media editor

The editor-in-chief of the China state-owned media Global Times, Hu Xijin, believes that the United States will enter a very unusual transition period and that China needs to develop ties with Biden's team, while not provoking Trump.

Hu said in a social media post that the U.S. is going into the most turbulent and uncertain transition period, and China must have bottom-line thinking, preparing for uncertainties. He added that China must develop contacts with Biden's team to explore the possibility of getting rid of the U.S.-China relation of extreme turmoil.

He further said that since Trump does not accept the election results, it is easier for him to vent all of the anger outside the U.S. than internally. The Chinese government should be conscious to avoid directing resentments over the defeat of the election in the Sino-U.S. relation. He suggested Chinese people should respect Trump himself, and there is no need to step on him or mock him.
