Hongkonger in Exile: "I use my lifetime to defend the Hongkonger identity"

Part 1:
https://t.me/guardiansofhongkong/27836

Part 2:

#SunnyCheung Kwan-yang was a former spokesman of #NetworkDIPLO who was active in international lobbying. He decided to leave Hong Kong in August 2020 for a life of exile.

In an interview in 2020, Chrung expressed he missed the time of setting street booths during elections in Hong Kong. In contrast to dealing with high-rank politicians in international lobbying now, he was at that time really getting in touch with Hongkongers, chatting with passers-by, and enjoying snacks from supporters. ‘Interacting with the people, talking to them closely, are what I treasure.’

While he is now abroad and safe, the fact that his comrades-in-arms are being arrested one after another makes him feel guilty and struggling. ‘Was it a correct decision to leave Hong Kong? Have I abandoned my comrades-in-arms?’ Upheavals in Hong Kong sadden him. ‘Lonely exile. No more connection with people in Hong Kong. As a stranger, everything needs to start from scratch.’

‘Every day I need to remind myself not to indulge in sadness. I need to become stronger.’

Asked if he had any words for the brothers in Hong Kong, he wanted to say ‘cheers and take care’, but held his tongue on second thought.

‘As a matter of fact, efforts we make abroad are always cheap. We can only play the role of supporter. We talk about solidarity and support, cheering up brothers and sisters, and asking them to take care, but except talking we can do nothing else…’ He advised Hongkongers that ‘despite the feebleness, gloom and absurdity of reality, [Hongkongers] still choose to be hopeful. It is all because hope forms the very basis of survival and resistance. This hope is the very source of strength.’

‘During exile, I reshuffle my life, which is a process of spiritual awakening. I will hold on to my faith, and use my lifetime to defend the Hongkonger identity.’

Living abroad and bearing in heart Hong Kong his homeland – this is Cheung’s promise to Hong Kong.

The Legend of Pianist Fou Ts'ong 傳聰 (1934-2020)

Any lover of Classical Music, will have a few copies of Fou T’song playing Chopin.

His parents sank in the waves of China’s soaring growth. His father was a famous France- based cultural critic and translator of French literature.

In 1955, Fou T’song was invited to compete in the 5th International Chopin Piano Competition in Warshaw, and won the 3rd place, being the first Chinese musician to win in the event.

After graduating from his piano studies in Poland, Fou did not return to China in 1958. Such an action was amidst a political suicide. During the Cultural Revolution, Fou’s parents were labelled by the Red Guards as rightists. The couple committed suicide by hanging themselves, and their graves were also destroyed later.

The Fou family was redressed when Deng Xiaoping came to power. Fou T’song was finally allowed to play in China.

Being called self-inflated and cynical, Fou responded in an interview by the Chinese media:

“I admit to being cynical, and I will always be cynical. There is nothing wrong about it. Humans should feel this way, to feel so strong about right and wrong. This is our instinct.”

He summed up his outlook on life in a few sentences.

This is Fou T’song.

[Editor's note: Fou T'song was born in 1934 in Shanghai during the Republican era of China. He died of coronavirus on December 28, 2020 in London]

Turkey, Iran, Pakistan rail link to China's Belt and Road

Turkey, Iran, Pakistan rail link to China's Belt and Road

The governments of Turkey, Iran and Pakistan will revive a transnational rail service linking Istanbul, Tehran and Islamabad (ITI), one of the projects in China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

This project was launched in 2009 under the umbrella of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), a 10-member political and economic intergovernmental organization founded in 1985 by Iran, Pakistan and Turkey.

China asked for additional guarantees from Pakistan and refused to give the complete concessional loan Islamabad.

That raises the question of how Pakistan will fund its railway network. Pakistan is expected to look for funding outside the BRI framework since China has no interest to offer financial support. China will lend political support to the ITI railroad because it complements the BRI. However, it still expects Iran, Pakistan and Turkey to bear costs and share risks if they wish to benefit from the trade and investment dividends a successful ITI railroad is expected to yield.

The West Should Not Abandon Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s freedoms are vanishing before our eyes. The West, not knowing how to respond to Beijing’s de facto annexation of Hong Kong, wonders: isn’t Hong Kong part of China, and isn’t this domestic matter none of our business? This Western passivity is a grave mistake because Chinese aggression in Hong Kong reveals the Beijing regime’s long-term strategy.

The treaty signed between Great Britain and Beijing in 1984 provided for a “restitution” of Hong Kong and the contiguous New Territories, on condition that the former colony would retain its political and judicial independence as an electoral democracy and capitalist system until 2045. The British imagined that China would, by then, have surely left Communism behind. They were doubly wrong.
