- TWO QUESTIONS -

1: What do you expect from others on social media?

To clarify, I'm specifically asking about interactions. If you reply on Twitter or leave a comment to a video on YouTube for example; what is your expectation relating to that action. Did you do it just to make a thought concrete, or is your expectation that the person you are directing that thought towards will see and possibly respond to your communication.

2. What can others expect from YOU on social media?

For example personally I aim to be (as) available for discord across digital channels (as possible).
There are technical hurdles across platforms which make this more or less possible. For example Twitter replies or mentions come through as notificatons: I have NOT muted the App. But if people choose a direct message as their avenue to connect with me there then I am likely to be delayed because Twitter does not notify of DMs from users you are not following. But I do not restrict the natural available throughput from any App.

A different example would be that today a person applogised for not replying to me on Telegram because although they had communicated with me on Telegram they did not allow to App to notify them of responses. Relying instead on choosing to open the App to see if there was something there.

I suspect that most people choose their favourite app. Letting that app notify them and quieting others.

But I'm interested to hear both what you expect from others and what others can expect from you.

Twitter Communities

This seems like a pretty new Twitter feature.

Are you using Twitter communities?

More YouTube layout tests

Last time I showed how YouTube was testing moving the video description from below the video to the right hand column. Now YouTube are also toying with moving the comments section too.

Accessing the description seems particularly difficult, with just a tiny clickable area to launch the description pannel. Comments gets a more visible clickable pill next to a new "subscribe" layout.

Thoughts?

Is anyone else seeing these A/B tests?

Instagram Favourites

"Today, we’re introducing Favorites and Following, two new ways to choose what you see in your feed."

My view: A half baked power user feature.

A maximum of fifty accounts can be favourited. That's an abitrarily low numer for power users, who are (mostly) the only users that will use this feature.

Twitter Community Invites (Suggestion)

Currently community invites are sent via Twitter Direct Message.
This seems like a flawed approach when DMs will often NOT trigger any notification, but rely on an inactive user actually going to look for unseen message request.

I would suggest a better approach could be to expose community invites in the general community area (user/communities).

There also needs to be user control over who can issue invites.

Twitter Communities now have separate hashtag pages.

A strange move? From the platform where hashtags started, community hashtags only return results from within the community.

This is how hashtags work in Telegram channels and groups.

Maybe useful for large groups in the future, but also reliant on user behaviour. Useful or not?

Is this legal?

The most common "competition" I see on social media, mostly on Instagram, currently is this: to enter follow X and Y accounts and tag X of your friends.

Is this kind of activity legal? Both in terms of platform policies, it's clearly gamification of the algorithm. And in terms of actual law, as the post is I assume a paid promotion on the publishing channel sponsored by the other channel that one is required to follow.

A new feature on Signal 😁
You can now (safely) quote Twitter community content.

Previously quoting a community tweet would have show "Tweet unavailable", but now it's been confirmed that community content can be quoted outside of a community.

Good news for community admins who have previously been unable to promote their communities by exposing top community content.
