On October 7, a group of foreign English-speaking mercenaries, numbering more than 10 people, among whom were active officers of the American special forces, made a sortie to our distant observation post in the village. Pologi, Zaporozhye region. At the observation post there were 3 of our fighters who had to retreat. After the mercenaries entered our position, terrible things began to happen to them, because our fighters brought reinforcements with them and began to knock out the mercenaries.

This video shows that after the first shootout, the mercenaries have two wounded, one of which is seriously. We all know what happened to them afterwards. Amers decided to retreat to their own, but on the way our "Sun" hit them. Every foreign mercenary must know that he will die in this war. We will talk about this in more detail today on the air of the Big Game program on Channel One at 19:55, where exclusive materials will also be presented. In addition, a more complete video will be published today by dear brother Rybar. Happy viewing.

RF Armed Forces fielding new Chimera UAV
(by Subaru X)

Recently, videos appeared which purport to show Russian-made Lancet attack UAVs attacking targets. Many observers pointed out that the UAVs in the videos do not resemble the Lancet in layout and size.

I focused on one of the recent videos, in which a large SUV was targeted, with footage both from above and also from an "FPV" view.

The UAV used in the attack is much larger than the Lancet, and is clearly a completely different design. Looking at the dimensions and layout of the UAV in the video, I concluded the most likely candidate is the Iranian Samad-3 UAV.

The Samad-3 has a range of 1600km and carries up to 40kg HE. It has been used to great effect by Yemeni Houthis against Saudi Arabian targets.

HOWEVER: The Samad-3 does not have an optics payload, and the FPV view shown in the attack is identical to that of the Lancet as the infographic shows.

This leads me to the conclusion that Russia has deployed a new chimera drone based on the Samad-3, but equipped with the Lancet optical package.

Articles are appearing in Western news sources about combat deaths of Russian reservists, less than 2 weeks after being mobilised.

Published articles in Western media about these cases give the false impression that newly mobilized troops are being sent into battle without preparation.

I am going to focus on the stories of 2 individual reservists who have indeed been tragically killed in action shortly after their mobilization, and explain why the Western narrative is in this case (as usual) very far off the mark.

Andrei Nikiforov (left) is described as a "lawyer from St Petersburg" who at the age of 40 was killed on October 7th in Lysichansk, just 10 days after being mobilised. The detail which is missing from Western sources is that since the late 1990s until June 2022, Andrei was a member of one of Russia's elite special forces units. His combat experience began in the second Chechen war, and he remained in active service until 2022. During the last years of his service he studied law, the practice of which he had just started since his discharge only 4 months ago. There should be no surprise that his time from mobilization to deployment was short.

Also recently mobilized Sverdlovsk Oblast resident Evgeni Bizyaev (Right) was killed in action in Ukraine, on October 10th. He was 28 years old. Looking at his photo it is clear he is a former member of the legendary, well-trained Russian naval infantry forces "black berets". I am unable to confirm the details of his service record, however the chest full of medals on this 2 meter tall warrior suggests significant combat experience.

In short, both of these men were highly experienced veterans. Due to their extensive and recent military and combat service, they were fast tracked to where their skills were needed most. Their deaths are a tragic loss to their families and to their nation, however the way their story is being portrayed is part of a false narrative.

A short, explosive presentation of the Shahed-136 / Geran-2 attack UAV.

LOITERING MUNITIONS
Thanks to all who watched and enjoyed our Shahed-136 / Geran-2 presentation video yesterday.

Questions appeared in comments about Geran-2 loitering functionality. This follow up is to expand on the subject and clarify what we know.

TLDR Quick Summary
We don't know if Geran-2 has loitering capability and it probably doesn't. Islamic Republic Shahed-136 drones may have loitering capability using a radiation seeker, however this has not been publicly demonstrated. My working hypothesis is Geran-2 doesn't have loitering capability. Why? Because we have seen Russian use of camera-guided UAVs for the loitering mission, in videos reported to be "Lancet" UAVs (which I allege are actually Iranian Samad-3 modified with Russian Lancet optics, HERE and also HERE).

DETAIL
Loitering munitions are attack UAVs which fly to a target area, then remain in a holding pattern until a target is identified. Once identified, the UAV attacks the target. The advantage of this is the ability to attack non-static targets such as vehicles, even while in motion. Several targeting  methods are used by loitering munitions:

1) Laser target designation. A laser is pointed at a target by ground spotters, or by a second, remotely piloted observer UAV such as the Russian Orlan-10. The attack UAV would need to have a device called a laser spot tracker, to lock onto and attack the target. In theory, the drone could do this autonomously or by remote command. While this may seem very complicated, laser target designation and tracking is a mature technology. For example, Russia uses Orlan-10 UAVs as laser target designators for the 152mm Krasnopol laser-guided artillery shell. Similar guidance of laser-tracking attack UAVs is a logical progression. There is one downside to laser tracking UAVs and that is high cost.

2) Camera guidance. The UAV sends a live camera feed to the ground station. It flies to the target area, then the pilot uses the UAV's camera to seek out targets. Once a target is identified and "locked", the UAV attacks it. The UAV's terminal dive may be manually piloted, or may be autonomous once the target is locked. This is also mature technology - even consumer-grade camera drones can be set to follow, circle or zoom into a target specified by the user. Camera guidance is used by the several recent "Lancet" UAV attack videos we have seen.

3) Sensor guidance. This method may use an IR-sensor to "lock on" to heat signatures (for example the exhaust of a tank) or a radiation seeker which homes in on electro-magnetic radiation from field radios or radar systems. Radiation seekers are versatile because they can be set to detect very specific frequencies. An autonomous UAV with a radiation seeker could loiter above a target area, waiting until a nearby air defence system activates its radar. As soon as the specific frequency and signal strength of the radar is identified, the UAV would lock on and attack the target autonomously.

The Islamic Republic claims Shahed-136 is capable of sensor guidance, using a radiation seeker as an optional feature. However, this capability is yet to be demonstrated in Shahed-136 or any other Iranian UAV. A radiation seeker and the upgrades required to the UAV's flight computer and control unit for autonomous maneuver and AI decision-making would add tens of thousands of dollars to the UAV unit price.

CONCLUSION
It is unlikely Geran-2 has a loitering function. To Russian forces it is a simple, cheap cruise missile which can be launched in swarms. Geran-2 flies a programmed path to fixed coordinates using inexpensive GLONASS and inertial guidance, then does a terminal dive to hit the target with its 50kg warhead. Despite its lack of "brains", Geran-2 has proven to be a devastating addition to Russia's arsenal. As Pro-Western Russian military commentator Viktor Suvorov put it, "A stupid weapon which works, is not a stupid weapon".

Azov Battalion foreign mercenary & recruiter Gaston Besson died in Pula, Croatia on 12 November 2022, aged 55. Cause of death: Alcoholism.

Living in Croatia as a foreign veteran of the Balkan conflict, Gaston Besson had many connections among Croatian veteran and ultra-nationalist groups. He was also connected to white power and anarchist groups around the world. Gaston had past experience from the 1990s, when he recruited for the Croatian and Bosnian HOS and HVO militias. Gaston made a lifestyle and financial living out of his claimed exploits in various conflicts. He actively promoted his mercenary image. Hundreds of photos and videos of him can be found online. He could be described as a merc influencer, since before social media existed.

Gaston arrived in Kiev in 2014, during the Maidan revolution. He joined SNA militants and was involved in  violence at Maidan and elsewhere.

Gaston was directly involved in the Azov's formation in March 2014, and planned international recruitment for the battalion together with its first commander Andrei Biletsky. Gaston's title at Azov was "coordinator, Ukrainian International Legion".

Gaston used his connections to recruit dozens of foreigners for Azov, including known radical neo-nazis.  He began actively recruiting in May 2014 as the battalion was being formed. His first social media recruitment notice was on 17 June 2014, and by mid July there were articles about his efforts published in international newspapers.

In his notices, Gaston was explicit about Praviy Sektor and Azov battalion ideology. He described them as national-socialist and radical, and said the unit would only accept people of European descent. His involvement with Azov and Praviy Sektor ended in 2015, after which he proceeded to slowly drink himself to death at his seaside home in Pula. He is survived by his Croatian wife and their 3 children.
