EU energy ministers again sought to overcome deep differences on a natural gas price cap that many hope would make utility bills cheaper so people can stay a little warmer during harsh winter days – if not this year, then later.
EU energy ministers have been forced into five emergency meetings because they cannot come to agreement on a maximum ceiling to pay for gas because of fear that global suppliers will simply bypass Europe when others offer more money.
Despite the time pressure two days ahead of an EU leaders summit, the meeting “will not be easy also because member states do have very different views and very different concerns,” EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson said. “Everybody has to show some flexibility, and everybody has to be able to propose some compromises.”

It took over 40 years to use the mechanism. Did it work well?
▪️Last week the US Department of Energy said announced that it would soon start replenishing the country's strategic oil reserves. For now world oil reserves created by governments are around 1.6 billion. Not taking into account commercial oil reserves, that would be enough for two weeks of world consumption. Both governments and commercial entities create oil reserves to compensate possible supply interruption in case of war or embargo. There are also investment companies that buy big amounts of oil and hold it for a certain time, but that’s a market operation.
▪️The US government decided to create strategic oil reserves back in the 1970s after the energy crisis broke out. The Gulf monarchies reaction to Israel's support was unexpected. The imposed embargo led to dramatic oil shortage, and the only way out was to buy and control enough oil. The US oil reserves were primarily based on petrodollars, since the FED got the possibility to print as many dollars as they needed without gold backing in 1976 (Jamaica Accords). Republicans Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush contributed greatly to piling up oil reserves. At the peak, they managed to accumulate 700 million barrels of oil. When Biden run for presidency, it was about 670 million barrels.
▪️That was enough to supply the equivalent amount of Russian oil for 200 days to Europe. So, when the US started financial attack on the EU energy market under cover of the military conflict in Ukraine, they had not much time for this very risky maneuver. That’s why they imposed embargo on Russian oil on December 5, 2022 and not before. If Russian oil supplies stopped completely back in February, Europe would face an economic and social catastrophe in 3-4 months. It took US almost a year to set new supply chains, while compensating gradually disappearing Russian oil with their strategic oil reserves.
▪️Conquering EU energy market is not an easy task. American oil reserves dropped to 380 million barrels. Washington paid a high price spending about half of the oil that had accumulated for almost 50 years. It was not enough to meet the EU oil needs, but enough to take control over EU energy market.
▪️Now the United States need to restore the oil reserves. It will take the several years to reach the previous volumes, if there are no global changes. For that period Russian oil will be shipped to Europe in various, mostly illegal ways. And some multinationals will help to bypass embargo, in favor of their profits. Old Europe will remain one of the main consumers of fossil fuels for several years.
🔺What’s next?
The idea of creating oil reserves was a good strategic decision that allowed US to dominate the world energy market. In a few years, after replenishing oil reserves, the Americans will be able to set full control over European market. The EU economic development will depend completely on the US vision. This big game is being played for decades, not for years. That’s why it was so deceiving for generations of EU politicians.

Amid ongoing Western efforts to draw his nation into a proxy war between NATO and Russia, the Prime Minister of Hungary promised his country’s leadership is “strong enough to keep the war away from our country.”
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban had pointed words for those pushing Hungary to join the Western proxy war against Russia this week.
“There are some who want to force Hungary into the war, and they are not picky about the means with which to achieve that goal,” Orban told a Swiss outlet this week, a summary published on his website indicates.
But “Hungary’s leadership is strong enough to keep the war away from our country,” he reiterated.
Still, it’s an enduring challenge, the Hungarian head of state noted, because his countrymen are the people “most affected by the EU sanctions introduced against Russia.”
And it’s not just the Western-imposed sanctions against Russia which are taking their toll on the country. As videos posted to social media show, Hungarian men living in the Transcarpathia region have been forcibly drafted at gunpoint and forced to serve as Ukrainian soldiers.
“Ukraine is our neighbor where Hungarians live as well,” Orban reportedly stated. “They are being conscripted and are dying by the hundreds on the front.”
Unfortunately, at this point, the matter seems to be out of their hands.
“Europe has retired from the debate,” Orban lamented. “In the decisions adopted in Brussels, I recognize American interests more frequently than European ones.”
“In a war that is taking place in Europe the Americans have the final word,” he added.
The prime minister agreed with the journalist’s assumption that the deeper causes of Europe’s weakness should be sought in the European Union, because “it is destroying the nation states without replacing them with anything workable.”
Asked by the interviewer whether “the deeper reason for Europe's weakness is to be found in the European Union” because “it breaks up nation-states without putting anything workable in their place,” Orban responded in the affirmative.
“I see it that way too,” he agreed, adding “the European Union wants an ever closer union.” But since “we don't agree on the goal,” and only “on the way” to get there, any such unity is a fool’s errand, the prime minister suggested.
As for the ultimate direction of the ongoing Western proxy war against Russia, Orban insisted that “no one can win it.”
“There is a nuclear power with a population of 140 million up against the Ukrainians, while there is the whole of NATO up against the Russians,” he stated.
“This is what makes things so dangerous,” according to Hungary’s prime minister, who claims the conflict has transformed into “a stalemate which can easily escalate into a world war.”
Illustrating his knowledge of the Russian perspective towards the conflict, Orban recounted his February 2022 meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who he spoke with in Moscow two weeks prior to the initiation of the special military operation
“Putin has a problem – this is what he told me – with the American missile bases already created in Romania and Poland, and with NATO’s potential expansion towards Ukraine and Georgia in order to station armaments there,” Orban explained.
“Additionally, the Americans terminated important disarmament treaties,” he explained, noting: “This is why Putin could no longer have a good night’s sleep.”
