🇷🇺 Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov takes part in the first Plenary Session of #G20 Summit

📍 New Delhi, September 9
Forwarded from Russian MFA 🇷🇺
📅 On September 10, the two-day #G20 Summit came to a close in New Delhi, India. Under instructions from President of Russia Vladimir Putin, the Russian delegation was led by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

Members of the G20 reached consensus on a final declaration for the summit. It reflects agreements on a wide range of current issues and actions, including food, climate, energy, the necessity of reforming international financial institutions, digital transformation, and macroeconomic policy. The specific goals, set in the interests of the countries in the Global South, were an important achievement.

<...>

❗️ The decision to include the African Union among the permanent members of the G20 was historical.

The Russian delegation, along with the #BRICS countries and other friendly partners, consistently advocated de-politicising discussions and maintaining the G20’s focus on countering today’s socioeconomic challenges, primarily on overcoming poverty, inequality, and the weakening of food and energy security under the influence of Western policies and the illegitimate unilateral sanctions. Together we suppressed the West’s attempts to “Ukrainise” the work of the G20 format, and noted numerous armed conflicts on the planet as well as calls for peaceful resolutions through dialogue and diplomatic efforts based on the full goals and principles of the UN Charter.

<...>

🤝 We will continue close cooperation with the Indian presidency of the G20 in the context of implementing New Delhi’s announced intention to hold an additional meeting of the G20 leaders via videoconference this November. We also count on productive coordination with Brazil and South Africa, who will assume the G20 presidency in 2024 and 2025, respectively; we are ready to implement relevant special initiatives with them, including those based on domestic experience and potential achievements.

🎙 Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s remarks at a gala meeting devoted to Diplomatic Worker’s Day (Moscow, February 9, 2024)

Key talking points:

🔵 This is not the first time that our country is at the peak of geopolitical processes. This is why Russia’s place in the emerging multipolar world and the future of the world itself largely depends on us, on our dedication and a correct understanding of the priorities.

🔵 The US-led collective West is not letting up in its attempts to impose an unfair unipolar global arrangement on the world.

🔵 Acting together with the countries of the global majority, our associates in the international arena, we will continue working for the unconditional guarantees for our lawful interests in regional security based on the principle of an indivisible Russia.

🔵 The hybrid war unleashed by the West against those who object to its global striving to maintain its domination is creating not only obstacles but also impetuses for strengthening versatile ties.

🔵 We intend to continue consolidating our strategic partnerships with the PRC, India, Brazil, South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, Syria, Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua and a vast number of other countries that share our conceptual approaches to the world situation and the prospects for the development of our common planet.

🔵 We attach primary importance to reaching the goals of Russia’s current presidency in the #CIS and the expanded #BRICS.

🔵 We focus in particular on advancing BRICS’ relations with regional and sub-regional association from the Global South

🔵 We will continue to work within the #G20, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum, the East Asia Summit mechanisms, and other multilateral associations that include the participation of Western representatives.

🔵 We will do our best to help further strengthen the #SCO in the interests of effectively addressing pressing international issues and promoting our concept for strengthening Eurasian security across the board.

📰 Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s interview with the Brazilian newspaper O Globo (February 21, 2024)

#G20

It became clear that relying on just one centre of economic power is not a viable approach and most recently the G20 has engaged in a dialogue to reform and to restore the functionality of global economic institutions.

The positive dynamics of this forum are largely attributable to the fact that emerging markets are acting independently and insisting on fair consideration of their interests.

☝️ It is important for the G20 countries to commit to not weaponise the economy and to not engage in unfair competition.

#BRICS

🌐 Strengthening the potential and role of BRICS in international affairs is our priority.

BRICS members represent different economic and political systems, religions, and macro-regions and are able to work together as equal partners. Its international standing is steadily growing.

#Ukraine

❗️The root causes of the Ukraine crisis need to be eliminated if we want to achieve a sustainable and fair settlement. The West must stop supplying weapons to Ukraine, and Kiev must stop hostilities.

Ukraine should reinstate its neutral, non-aligned, and non-nuclear status and ensure the rights and freedoms of its citizens. It is critical that the basis be the new territorial realities and the situation on the ground.

#RussiaUS

👉 The ruling elite of the US views Russia as an adversary and a threat regardless of its party affiliation. The former president did nothing to improve Russia-US relations during his four-year stint in the White House.

We have no illusions and do not expect the anti-Russian course of the US to change in the foreseeable future. We are prepared to work with any leader who wins the American people’s trust. What matters to us is not specific political figures, but their policies towards Russia. President Putin made that clear recently in his televised interview.

🌐 On February 21-22, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov took part in the G20 Ministerial meeting in Rio de Janeiro, the first such meeting held as part of Brazil’s chairmanship in this key forum of global economic governance.

👉 Read in full

Speaking on the G20’s role in overcoming current international tensions, Sergey Lavrov presented Russia’s detailed assessments of the geopolitical situation noting the West’s deliberate policy to maintain its dominance by containing new centres of power, eroding the coordinating function of the UN and the primacy of the universal provisions of international law, and substituting them with restricted-participation alliances and an obscure rules-based order. <...>

The principled Russian policy to preserve the #G20 as a key global economic forum that is free from politicisation and is not authorised to interfere in matters of international peace and security to the detriment of the prerogatives of the UN Security Council was reaffirmed.

❗️In this context, the unacceptability of attempts to lead the discussion away from the real challenges that plague the global economy through the Ukrainisation of the G20 agenda was emphasised <...>.

In light of shifts in the balance of power and the rise of new global growth centres, the participants paid special attention to the importance of democratising the global governance system by expanding the rights of the Global South in proportion to its actual weight in the international arena. <...>

The minister noted the importance of considering the objective trend towards the greater global economic role of associations such as #BRICS, the #SCO, #ASEAN, the #EAEU, the African Union, the Arab League, and #CELAC in G20 activities.. <...>

🤝 Sergey Lavrov held a number of bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Türkiye, South Africa, Egypt, Bolivia, Brazil, Mexico and Paraguay on the sidelines of the G20 Ministerial Meeting.
🎉 Today we celebrate the 32nd anniversary of Russia - South Africa diplomatic relations.

Since 2️⃣8️⃣ February 1️⃣9️⃣9️⃣2️⃣ we have gone a long way in developing cooperation.

🤝Traditionally friendly ties between our countries date back to the times of struggle against the apartheid regime.
Many prominent ANC members, stalwarts of revolution such as Josiah Gumede, Moses Kotane and John Beaver Marks visited the Soviet Union in 1920-1930s.

🤝 This line of interaction between our peoples continued well into 1960’s and 1980s when the USSR rendered assistance to liberation movements that fought against the apartheid, first and foremost – to South African Communist Party and ANC.

☝️ Soviet Union provided humanitarian, financial, organizational support, as well as training for military and civilian specialists among the black population of South Africa.

🤝 Russia is honoured with the fact that South Africans cherish the memory of those Soviet citizens who sacrificed their lives to assist the liberation struggle in the region of Southern Africa, including the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa.

🤝 The Russian section of the Wall of Names with the names of 67 Soviet military specialists was solemnly unveiled on 13 December 2018 in Freedom Park, heritage memorial complex in Pretoria.

🤝 Today, our countries enjoy a long-standing strategic partnership, efficiently cooperate both on the bilateral track and in international fora & organisations including #BRICS, #G20, at the UN & UN Security Council.

🎙 Acting Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov answers questions during a plenary session of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation (Moscow, May 14, 2024)

Key talking points:

• Western efforts to preserve its hegemony have entered a critical phase. <...> China has emerged as a leader of global growth. This fact does not sit well with the US, which, along with its satellites, having brought the rest of the West to its heel, made a doctrinal statement that they cannot allow anyone to become stronger or more influential than Washington. So, objectively, alongside our Chinese colleagues we are interested in continuing to lead the efforts to establish a fairer and more democratic world order.

🤝 The duo of Moscow and Beijing is playing a crucial balancing role in international affairs. I am confident that the upcoming visit of President Vladimir Putin to China will further strengthen our joint efforts.

• Following the expansion of #BRICS, our representation in the #G20 has increased. Half of the G20 members are either BRICS members or share similar perspectives with us. Therefore, the G20 will undergo positive transformations emphasising the inclusion of the interests of other regions of the world and groups of countries rather than representing the interests of the "collective West".

• We have numerous allies, and I have no doubt that we will have more of them which will contribute to democratising international relations, where every nation will have a rightful place of its own in global affairs based on its fair and actual contribution to the global economy, politics, and security system, as opposed to blackmail, threats, and ultimatums used by the West.

🌍 During the second Russia-Africa Summit, there were numerous plenary sessions and bilateral contacts with individual sub-regional African associations. <...> This is one of the main items on the agenda, including the implementation of the Declaration and Action Plan adopted at the second Summit.

They delved into the substantive discussion regarding the execution of agreements made during the Beijing summit, along with addressing various other topics on the bilateral agenda.

They also exchanged opinions on the current status and future prospects of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. The foreign ministers of Russia and China acknowledged the joint efforts of member states in upholding peace and stability in Eurasia. They also highlighted the increasing influence of the Organisation on global and regional affairs.

🤝 The Ministers reaffirmed their dedication to enhancing mutual coordination within the #UN, its Security Council, as well as the #SCO, #BRICS, the #G20, #APEC and other key international organisations and dialogue platforms. Various pressing issues were addressed, including the Middle East peace process, developments in the Red Sea region, and the situation on the Korean Peninsula. <...>

Sergey Lavrov thanked the Chinese partners for their well-balanced stance on resolving the Ukrainian crisis and appreciated Chinese President Xi Jinping’s proposal to convene a peace conference with an equal participation by Russia and Ukraine, considering Moscow’s legitimate security interests and the current situation.

🌏 There was a thorough discussion regarding the situation in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly concerning the increased provocative actions by the United States and its allies. These actions aim to involve specific Asia-Pacific nations in narrow-bloc arrangements, undermining the #ASEAN-centric security framework and deploying destabilising weapon systems in the region.
