Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida confirmed with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken that the two countries will work together to try to calm the situation in the war between Israel and Hamas.
Later in the day, Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa, who assumed the position in mid-September, also exchanged views with Blinken about the conflict, emphasizing Japan's strong condemnation of Hamas's terrorist attacks.
Kamikawa conveyed her appreciation to Blinken about the US diplomatic efforts concerning the developments in the Middle East, according to the Japanese Foreign Ministry.

Defense ministers in ASEAN called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and a durable solution to the crisis in Myanmar during the opening of a regional meeting in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Officials are attending the 2-day meeting alongside key players in the Indo-Pacific as major powers jostle for regional influence, and as conflicts deepen from Myanmar to the Middle East.
Opening the annual get-together, Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto said the world's largest Muslim-majority nation was deeply saddened by the deteriorating conditions in Gaza, particularly the "horrid" humanitarian situation.

Arab and Muslim ministers called on Monday for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, as their delegation visited Beijing on the first leg of a tour to push for an end to hostilities.
The delegation, which is set to meet officials representing each of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, is also piling pressure on the West to reject Israel's justification of its actions against Palestinians as self-defence.
The officials holding meetings with China's top diplomat Wang Yi on Monday are from Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Indonesia, Palestine and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, among others.

Malaysia on Wednesday said it will bar vessels owned by Israeli shipping firm Zim from docking and unloading cargo at its ports, along with any ship bearing the Israeli flag.
Malaysia has for decades staunchly backed the Palestinian cause, with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim accusing Israel of conducting genocide.
“The ban is in response to Israel’s disregard for basic human rights and international law through its continued assault and brutality towards the people of Palestine,” Anwar said.
