🇸🇴 US air strike in Somalia 'kills 30 militants'

A US air strike assisting government troops in Somalia has killed about 30 Islamist al-Shabab militants, the US military says.

The operation happened near the town of Galcad, about 260km northeast of the capital Mogadishu. Over the past few days, the Somali army and al-Shabab militants have fought for control of the town.

Friday's air strike came as the army was being attacked by more than 100 militants, the US Africa Command says. In its report on the Galcad fighting the US Africa Command said three al-Shabab vehicles were destroyed and "the command assesses that no civilians were injured or killed".

Earlier the Islamists killed seven soldiers after storming a military base in Galcad. Somalia's Information Ministry said dozens of the militants were killed.

🇸🇴 Top al-Shabab commanders killed by Somali forces

The Somali government says it has killed more than 130 fighters from the Islamist militant group al-Shabaab - including top commanders. It says a joint operation was carried out with Somalia's international partners, which include the US military.

Over the last six months the al-Shabaab group has lost swathes of territory as the result of an operation led by pro-government forces.

It is impossible to verify the details of this attack but the Somali government has described what sounds like a significant setback for al-Shabaab.

An information minister said 136 jihadist fighters had been killed in a joint operation with Somalia's international partners.

🇸🇴 Al-Shabaab commanders killed in Somalia operation

Somalia official said at least 10 al-Shabaab militants have been killed in a security operation in the central Hiiraan region.

It said those killed in Tuesday's engagement included three senior commanders of the Islamist group, adding that the national intelligence agency and international partner forces were involved.

Al-Shabaab has lost large areas of territory in recent months in the face of an offensive by Somalia's military working with the African Union, US forces and clan militia - but it continues to launch attacks in the capital, Mogadishu, and some neighbouring countries.

🇺🇳🇸🇴 UN warns of humanitarian crisis in Somaliland

About 100,000 people fleeing fighting in Somaliland, Somalia's self-declared independent region, have taken refuge in a month in a remote area of Ethiopia already suffering from severe drought, the UN and Ethiopian refugee agencies announced.

If the number of refugees is confirmed, their arrival will add 40% to the population of the three districts in Ethiopia bordering Somalia, where about 236,000 people are already suffering severely from the drought affecting their region and more broadly part of the Horn of Africa.

Before the arrival of the Somaliland refugees, Ethiopia, with a population of about 120 million, was already hosting more than 880,000 refugees, mostly from South Sudan, Somalia, Eritrea and Sudan, according to the UNHCR.

🇸🇴🇪🇹 Somalia and Ethiopia floods cause devastation and displacement

Flash flooding from heavy rains killed dozens and affected 300,000 people in Ethiopia and Somalia in March 2023. The damaging flooding came after the region has experienced almost three years of extreme drought.

Moderate to heavy rains in the Ethiopian highlands overtopped banks of the Shabelle and Juba rivers. Homes, schools, and health facilities were destroyed along the banks of the two rivers, in southern Somalia and eastern Ethiopia, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

More than 1,000 hectares of cropland have been swamped by recent rains, challenging the agricultural economies in Ethiopia and Somalia. Even with the unexpectedly early and heavy rains in March, climate models project that the long rains this year will be drier than normal and drought conditions are likely to continue.

🇸🇴 Suicide bomber in Somalia's capital kills at least 13 soldiers

A suicide bomber killed at least 13 soldiers and wounded at least 20 more inside the Jale Siyaad military academy in Somalia's capital Mogadishu on Monday, a soldier who saw the bodies said, in an attack claimed by the al Shabaab militant group.

In recent weeks, with the military campaign against them stalled as the army prepares a second phase of the offensive, al Shabaab fighters have stepped up their attacks.

The victims hailed from the Lower Shabelle region and had come to the capital for training, said Captain Ali Farah.

Al Shabaab said in a statement the bomber had killed 73 soldiers and wounded 124 others. The group typically gives casualty figures that are significantly higher than those provided by the authorities.
